Important
editHi Wham- Please note that I created this page (Candy Lightner) on 6-9-05 using Candy Lightner: Founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) as the Source. Therefore, it is not spam. Thanks.David Justin 16:12, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Source verification
editHi Wham- Please notice that the material in bold was from “Candy Lightner: Founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).“ The Wikipedia entry is clearly sourced from that page and indicating so does not constitute spam. To the contrary, it is proper documentation. Its also important in correcting the assertion added on 31-12-06 that the Wikipedia entry is “Based primarily on material on MADD's official website.” In reality, the MADD site has virtually nothing about Candy Lightner and recently even denied that she was the founder o the organization. Thanks.David Justin 00:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure if I understand your claim completely - it does say right on MADD's site that she was the founder in their history section: here. Noxxeexxon (talk) 21:40, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
Cleanup
editI've removed some of the statements that were still unsourced, per WP:BLP. If you add them back, make sure there's a reliable source to refer to, and add that source. Also, sources quoting another source don't work very well, please try to get hold of the original (via archives, for instances). It's a lot more work, but relying on others to interpret and quote other sources has proved problematic in the past. --JoanneB 10:32, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
American River College
editLightner went to American River College? Isn't that the college where they had that Black Chalks American College Testing Service deletion scandal? She was there years before it happened, but things tend to cumulate. Pease don't confuse the two issues, both separated by many years. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.212.148.215 (talk) 03:38, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Link to Postdam.edu site
editBased on WP:BLP, I have removed the external link to a potsdam.edu website funded by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. Although David J. Hanson may be separately notable, his articles on this website may not be, especially given the website's disclaimer as to other funding and content. While some of Hanson's ongoing POV edits here have been removed over the 3 years since he created the article, the external link was obviously not to an objective article or accurately described. If the link goes back in, it needs a correct description and disclaimer, along with other links that provide more objective info, but I wanted to discuss it here first, since there are a number of other links to this website and articles throughout Wikipedia. Flowanda | Talk 00:44, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- The potsdam.edu link used as a reference doesn't meet WP:RS or the stringent sourcing per WP:BLP, so I am removing it. Flowanda | Talk 22:26, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- It had reappeared, I killed it again, based on the above, as no one opposed.User talk:Unfriend12 15:51, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Washington Times Source
editI found a source to one of the references. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2002/aug/6/20020806-035702-2222r/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.202.160.224 (talk) 01:49, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Huge rollback
editI had reverted it... but I undid my revert and let the rollback stand. I don't generally approve, as there was some good stuff there, I think, but... it was ugly. User talk:Unfriend12 05:16, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Dredging through the additions, I don't see anything sourced that has been cut.User talk:Unfriend12 05:26, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Much essay content added - I removed it
editMuch essay content was added, and some quotes were changed. No new sources were added, some were removed. I have reverted the edit. If anyone supports it, please join the discussion. Interestingly, much of it matched the content removed in the rollback.User talk:Unfriend12 02:55, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
- Editor continues to remove all sources, add much unsourced essay content, add a quote in the references section (without any indication that it was said by the subject), and change a widely published quote. I have reverted the edit again.User talk:Unfriend12 22:21, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
MADD PDF sources gone
editThey appear to have reworked their PDFs... for example, Cari seems to be covered at [1] - and this may or may not replace some of the other sources. Leaving the dead links in.User talk:Unfriend12 04:19, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Propose to drop the "brains aren't developed" quote
editI don't see this as one of her "known-for" or even noteworthy quotes... the ref is to a video, I don't see it reused in the press. I left it in because it does have a source. But do we need it? If anyone thinks it belongs, I expect I won't kill it. But if no one champions it, I expect to drop it at some point.User talk:Unfriend12 02:37, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
- I definitely think it should be kept. It is sourced (unlike other quotes) and her quote did attract some small publicity when it was made. KPalicz (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 16:41, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- I don't see any. Do you have a link? A blog entry is not publicity. And... a quote sourced to a video? It isn't the subject of the video. I don't doubt she said it, but ... wp:notability... no one thinks it is interesting enough to mention in the press.User talk:Unfriend12 16:49, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- Reason.com is a rather high profile, reputable news site. And you'll note that that article cited another site (though the link is no longer working). If you'd rather source the quote to the article instead of the video, then fine. Either way, the quote should be included. The whole quote section was removed by someone because none of the quotes were sourced, well this quote IS sourced, the quote and the section should be restored. KPalicz (talk) 16:56, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- An interested editor might make an effort to create an entry on wikiquote. I don't think it will make it, but I have been wrong before and will again.
- I don't expect to kill the section if it is restored, but I expect someone else will. In wp:quote "Do not insert any number of quotations in a stand-alone quote section."
- The best way to add quotes to a WP article, if they are needed ...and this one isn't, IMO... is to build them into the prose of the article. The idea of WP is to put into the editors own words what appears in the media.User talk:Unfriend12 21:14, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

editCan you please explain why this bio page was deleted? And why the only reference to her name, Candace or Candy Lightner is redirected to the MADD page? Also, can a new bio page be created, not redirected to MADD? Wdawnw (talk) 19:00, 13 December 2016 (UTC)DW
- @Wdawnw: The article was deleted based on a discussion that determined community consensus is that Lightner, and other MADD presidents, do not meet the notability requirements for a stand-alone article.--Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 19:06, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
@Ponyo: I am new to this so where can I find the requirements for notability? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wdawnw (talk • contribs) 19:12, 13 December 2016 (UTC) Wdawnw (talk) 19:21, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Wdawnw: Here are the guidelines. Note that you would need to demonstrate notability outside of her MADD founding presidency to overcome the consensus at the deletion discussion, otherwise the article will likely be re-deleted.--Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 19:49, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
@Ponyo: Candace Lightner is the founder of MADD, the CEO, President and Chairman of the Board. She masterminded MADD from a small California grass roots organization into a international corporation with more than 400 chapters worldwide and an annual budget of over 12 million dollars. . She is the person responsible for helping to change laws regarding drunk driving, written a book, had a movie made about her life, she is in the Smithsonian with an exhibit, won numerous awards, including those presented to her by the President of the United States, public speaker, and the list goes on. I think this meets the requirements of notability. So how can I write a page with her name that is being redirected to the MADD page. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wdawnw (talk • contribs) 19:35, 15 December 2016 (UTC) Wdawnw (talk) 15:15, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
