editThis page says that Welch was fired for not showing up to work on time, but on Welch's page it says, "The actress was due to star in an 1982 adaptation of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, but was fired by the producers a few days into production (they claimed that the 40 year old was too old to play the character)."
I'm inclined to believe the latter account, because (1) they replaced her with an actress who was 15 years younger, and (2) she won $10 million in her lawsuit, and somehow I doubt she could have persuaded the court to give her that much if she'd been fired for good cause.
