CNN article implying rape is also punished with capital punishment
edithttp://us.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/11/10/india.rape.ap/index.html
Is CNN mistaken or should the article be changed? --OrbitOne [Talk|Babel] 16:06, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
CNN is mistaken. There was demand to include death for rape but it is not made into law as many people protested saying that the rapist might kill the victim for the fear of being identified and hanged himself. So as of 2013, rape is not punishable by death but murder is and many rapists-murderers have been sentenced to death for the murder part not the rape part even though the rape part played into the brutality of the act which awarded them death penalty. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.189.128.15 (talk) 20:00, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
Method
editThis is section needs to be expanded and moreover clarified. Hanging is just too generic as there are numerous ways can be executed in this fashion. I am therefore assuming for "humane" reasons the Indian justice system employs the long drop method, but as it is not stated who knows? Secondly does the prison service use a "professional" executioner or is it done an ad hoc basis? The use of an amateur or inexperienced person might lead to mistakes and botched attempts. Thirdly, in the 16 states which have conducted executions since the independence from the UK, has hanging been the choice of all, or have other methods been used? For this to be a good article these sorts of basic questions should be addressed. I am not an knowledgeable in such matters, so there is no point in me trying. Nevertheless that does not stop being critical in its deficiencies! 86.179.180.192 (talk) 07:28, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

short drop / long drop ?
editThere is an inaccuracy in this article. The first sentence in the "Execution of death sentence" section states:
- "The execution of death sentence in India is carried out by hanging by the neck till death, i.e. short drop [emphasis added]."
Not only is this statement unsourced, it is incorrect. Reliable sources indicate that in India, hanging is performed using the long drop method. Please see:
- http://indianexpress.com/article/explained/a-rope-and-planning-for-his-last-breakfast-how-nagpur-jail-is-preparing/
There are other sources available if necessary. I would like to change the sentence to read:
- "The execution of death sentence in India is carried out by hanging by the neck till death."
If there is anyone who would disagree with this change, please discuss it now, here on the talk page. I plan to make the change in the next few days.

NOTICE: I've gone ahead and made the change I proposed. There are no reliable sources cited to back up the claim that hangings in India are done by short drop; and I have actually presented references (above) showing that in fact the long drop is used. As I've requested before, if anyone disagrees with this edit, please discuss it here (including presenting your reasons).
