Cardiff Uni Staff Rewriting content

edit

I've noticed in the history that there negative news stories or links are being removed by a user or users from an IP rang of 131.251.124.206. When you reverse lookup this range it resolves as a Cardiff University IP address. Therefore, the PR people must be removing content which they do not agree with or perhaps just removing content that a very small minority of people think is as important as the other content noted in the summary of the institution. Perhaps Wikipedia and the page editors can discuss the validity, relevancy and appropriateness of the content before it is reinstated.

Coat of arms

edit

The current image for the coat of arms is incorrect. It is only a poorly redrawn version of the shield contained within the actual coat of arms. The actual coat of arms can be seen here: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/about/our-profile/history — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C6:7C09:AA00:F97C:C6F1:95A0:1AE7 (talk) 22:49, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

You are mistaken. It is a correct representation of the coat of arms, but not of the full achievement. From coat of arms: "A coat of arms is a heraldic visual design on an escutcheon (i.e., shield), surcoat, or tabard. The coat of arms on an escutcheon forms the central element of the full heraldic achievement which in its whole consists of: shield, supporters, crest, and motto." There is no available-for-use (non copyright) image of the full achievement, but if you would like to make one it can be put in here. Until that happens, it's best to have the coat of arms without the additional elements. Robminchin (talk) 02:56, 19 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

The list of notable alumni is way too long and should be listed on a separate page

edit

The current list includes over 150 alumni and is not appropriate for a main university page. Not everyone, such as "a writer", "a neuroscientist" is notable ElKeybo (talk) 05:40, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

All of the listed alumni have a standalone Wikipedia article and are therefore notable. What policy do you think limits the length of a "notable alumni" section? In any case, if you want to move this information to a separate list article, you can do that, but the information should not simply be deleted with the rationale that it "should be listed on a separate page" without taking any action to do so. I agree with ElKeybo that this list doesn't belong on the main page. Not everyone with a Wikipedia article page is a notable alumni, otherwise universities would have thousands if not tens of thousands entries. Check WP:ONUS Should really be the responsibility of whoever added these in the first place. 2407:B9C0:F001:C3:5054:FF:FEF2:7A7 (talk) 08:19, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, this should be on a separate page,as is done for many other universities with a large number of notable alumni. I would suggest, following List of University of Cambridge people, List of University of Oxford people, List of Durham University people, etc. that List of Cardiff University people would allow it to hold both alumni and staff. This should be fairly straightforward to create from the current information here; if I get time and nobody else does it first I'll try to do it later today. The page has been created and content copied in there, with a small amount of re-arrangement. I've moved the list of Cardiff VCs to the history section on this page as it should be preserved here as part of the history. We can now cut down on the list on the main page. I would note that guidance in WP:UNIGUIDE is:
"Noted people – This section should give a sense of the extent to which persons with well-known deeds or highly significant accomplishments are or have been associated with the school (as by attendance there or by being on staff or faculty). For most schools this might take the form of a list of people meeting Wikipedia's notability standards (each with perhaps a very brief descriptive phrase), where such a list would not be excessively long. For very old, very large, or very prestigious schools it may be more appropriate to use categories ("Alumni of", "Faculty of", etc. note that "Alumni" categories are only for former students, including graduates; current students are not considered alumni) instead, limiting the explicit list to very well-known persons (heads of state, historical figures, etc.) and adding a narrative summary of statistics on such things as Nobel Prizes, other prestigious awards, and so on."
The section on the main page should thus include summary statistics and list the most well known people associated with the university. This should probably include at least the heads of state and the ones currently illustrated with pictures. Robminchin (talk) 18:02, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
