Carol Smallwood just loves to edit this page
editI have tagged the page as an autobiography. Look in the history. Carol Smallwood just loves to edit her Wikipedia page! User Carol Smallwaood has been warned not to do this several times but just ignores the warnings. Page should therefore be taken with a grain of salt, until such time as CS decides to leave things to more objective parties. Someone should actually AFD this page, as the notability here is dubious. 104.163.139.13 (talk) 04:28, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

Please remove
Unbalanced scales.svg A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies, particularly neutral point of view. Please discuss further on the talk page. (July 2017) (Learn how and when to remove this template message)
I thought it could be updated if I logged in and updates were verified. I finally found this Talk Page and hope it is the correct way to update? It is very confusing for me. Thank you for your help and service for others.(Carol Smallwood (talk) 15:50, 10 September 2017 (UTC)).
- Hi there. The Career section of the article does not seem to follow the NPOV policy of the English Wikipedia, which is why I have placed the template there. A relevant section of the NPOV page would be: "Prefer nonjudgmental language. A neutral point of view neither sympathizes with nor disparages its subject (or what reliable sources say about the subject), although this must sometimes be balanced against clarity. Present opinions and conflicting findings in a disinterested tone. Do not editorialize. When editorial bias towards one particular point of view can be detected the article needs to be fixed".
- What I don't seem to understand is how the Career section purely talks about publications, when all of those are already mentioned within the publications list. A way to change that would be to only leave a few publications that had the most "impact", as well as the viewpoints relating to them (note that the current viewpoint presentation seems positively biased). The rest doesn't have to be there, as even reading the whole thing seems confusing, with a review upon a review. Now, if the section was expanded with some other information, that would be a different matter...
- Also, please note that wording such as "The book provides public and higher education libraries with strategies and tested programs to encourage patron interaction with libraries" is trying to pass off a source's opinion as a fact, and cannot be included.
- Hopefully, that gave you some tips on how to improve the section. Lastly, feel free to discuss the contents of the article and possible improvements with other editors on this talk page. Once the Career section no longer reads promotional, the tag can be removed. Regards, VB00 (talk) 18:34, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
How can the template of COI be removed?
editIt said learn how and when to remove it in the box.Carol Smallwood (talk) 07:13, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
- Clicking on the hyperlink within the template will open up (click) this guide. Please look through the points presented under the section "When not to remove" (You should not remove maintenance templates if any of the following apply: *Points follow*). The most relevant is point 1, which states:"The issue has not yet been resolved", as no significant progress has been made on improving the problem areas of the article. Feel free to read through the rest of the guide to understand the template removal procedure and its requirements better. Regards, VB00 (talk) 15:41, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
Conflict
editThis edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Sorry I've been a bother. I thought updates were acceptable if I was logged in and references were verified links. Could the template indicating a conflict of interest be removed if all my reviews be deleted, or just those recent ones felt to be in question? I can see updates could seem to be promotional but my intention was to keep the entry current but won't post anymore since I now know this is against policy. Thank you for all you do.Carol Smallwood (talk) 06:03, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Carol Smallwood and welcome.
From here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Maintenance_template_removal#When_not_to_remove (please click through) and I have copied and placed in green for clarity
You should not remove maintenance templates if any of the following apply:
- The issue has not yet been resolved;
- There is ongoing activity or discussion related to the template issue (with the exception of POV-related templates);
- You do not understand the issues raised by the template;
- You have been paid to edit the article or have some other conflict of interest.
- The editor who placed the template stated in their edit summary: Adding COI tag - despite editing, still is far too promotional. Since then there have been only minor adjustments to the article (such as spelling). So per the numbered reasons: the issue has not been resolved; we are prolonging resolution since (number 2) we are still discussing the template issue ( and number 3: without understanding since you are still questioning the need for it) and (number four: you have a conflict-of-interest). Thanks and wishing you the best. Fylbecatulous talk 15:31, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
Template Removed
editHow can a clean up mentioned on the template be done? Who can help with this since I have been told I cannot edit myself? The references called promotional are connected with being a writer which were added by volunteers. Yes, I logged in and updated 3 I believe in July to make them current which can be deleted. I now understand revising is against your policy if done by me and volunteers are in short demand. I do hope the clean up mentioned is done. Carol Smallwood (talk) 17:23, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- No worries, I'll go over it for you. I know how frustrating WP:COI can be! I will say that people telling you not to edit are entirely wrong. Unfortunately it usually sends a red flag when COI users edit their conflicted page, but those users should take the extra second to hold back their judgement and look at your edits objectively. Users with a declared COI are absolutely allowed to edit their own pages, but of course their edits receive more scrutiny (and rightfully so). I can't speak to your past contributions to this page as I only just stumbled across it, but I can go through the article and try to fix it up so we don't need that tag on it. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 00:26, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
Career section
editHaving trouble with editing this article to remove any promotional info. The entire Career heading is very awkward to read. Very long book titles interspersed with favorable quotes with no clear order or organization. Furthermore, the books listed in this section are not all also listed under her Publications section, and I wonder why that would be. If she wrote these books they should certainly be added to the Publications header, which would allow their removal from the Career header since at the moment they are talking less about her career and more about her in a favorable light. Opinions? SEMMENDINGER (talk) 00:38, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- Also having a difficult time finding any reference to the "ByLine 1st Place for First Chapter of a Novel" award online. The reference used for it (and all the other awards) come from a site that is declared to be written by the poet themselves, or their reps. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 00:48, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- That seems to be a problem with AfDs. Apparently, to establish notability in the first AfD, they just randomly added book reviews to the section, probably without much regard to how it would look afterwards. I suppose the COI tag could be replaced with advert, but, since you are working to fix the issue, that wouldn't make much difference. Regards, VB00 (talk) 13:47, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah that's what it is seeming to look like to me. I think the references are fine in establishing notability - at least they are better than many of the poetry stubs I've been looking up to gauge how to write a page - but it definitely reads more as an advert now (which was put in by her so the COI probably still stands). In any case, one editor's recent removal of all the references in the Published works section really helps in cleaning up the Career section, which I'll look at soon. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 18:07, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

In reference to my recent edit, I moved all publication names into the appropriate section. Each were cited, and it was already established that references are not needed where an IBSN is added (see a few edits before mine). I also removed favorable quotes as they were seen as promotional on this talk page, and as an advert. I do not think I removed too much, though the loss of references was regrettable. They are still there in the previous revisions of the page, but their use previously was beneficial to the page in any NPOV manner. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 18:36, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Awards
editFour of these awards are not notable (ie. they have no articles about them) The Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award is supported by a press release which is not suitable [1]. The others are supported by her own page here [2] which is a primary source. The Eric Hoffer Award is barely notable though might be acceptable if we can find an independent source. Theroadislong (talk) 11:38, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- Carol Smallwood provided alternative sources for the Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award on my talk page and elsewhere:
- https://wwlifetimeachievement.com/2018/12/12/carol-smallwood - a primary source of rather dubious reliability. It's a WordPress blog whose "about us" page doesn't give any indication who that organization actually is. If that's
- http://momeggreview.com/2019/01/14/currents-announcement-award-for-smallwood/ - I have no opinion on the print journal, but I doubt the independence of an announcement that says, "[...] and she is grateful for Mom Egg Review in their dedication to helping so many women and mother writers like her." That's pure self-aggrandizement.
- http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/4122617 - the same press release as above.
- https://www.24-7pressrelease.com/press-release/459909/carol-smallwood-presented-with-the-albert-nelson-marquis-lifetime-achievement-award-by-marquis-whos-who - yet again the same press release, this time on a different website.
- None of these strike me as particularly reliable sources. I also doubt that this "Lifetime Achievement Award" is a significant achievement; for all I can tell, the only criterion for this award is "has been in Who's Who for ten years". Huon (talk) 14:11, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

You may not know that Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone is welcome to contribute to our content, including you! - Hello, Carol Smallwood. Those template messages are just to highlight issues with the article that need the attention of editors. - No none of these are independent and the real problem is that the award itself isn't notable. Theroadislong (talk) 08:36, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

- Not done we don't need a list of every book you have ever had published, the list should probably be trimmed and re-titled "selected publications". Theroadislong (talk) 21:23, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Ticket#2019012310010499] Updates 2-2-19 Dear carol smallwood, We have received your message. You may not know that Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone is welcome to contribute to our content, including you! We have no central editorial board; all of our articles are written and edited by individual volunteer members of the Wikipedia community. You don't need to apply or get special permission to participate.
What I edited was not suited was the response I received: so please remove the Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award under AWARDS. One of my 2 new books was successfully added under POETRY, the other wasn't. So could the 2 shields/templates finally be removed?
With thanks for all the work you volunteers do! Carol Smallwood (talk) 22:36, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

New Book Review Excerpt

Dr. Ronald Primeau, Central Michigan University, included Thread, Form, and Other Enclosures Main Street Rag, 2020. 96 pp. in: MidAmerica: The Yearbook of the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature, 2021.
Excerpt from “Complexity and Variety in Eight Midwestern Poets: A Review Essay”
“Right now we need Carol Smallwood’s poems in Thread, Form, and Other Enclosures. In the midst of the barrage of challenges we face as a nation, publishing houses and many seats of critical power on both coasts continue to ignore the wisdom of making connections, persisting in the mistake of treating the Midwest as fly-over territory. Smallwood’s collection lives up to its title as it recycles into quilts what has become harmfully and needlessly fragmented as we attempt to analyze all feeling and emotion under the lens of science, is a reconnecting of what was once whole, a creation that shapes its own enclosure."

Not done I do not want to add this as a block quote in the article as I do not think it is encyclopedic. A reviewer in the future can consider this source's inclusion into the article at a later date. Z1720 (talk) 00:44, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
