Finding the centre by J.M.Stuart

The figures quoted by J.M. Stuart (111º 00' 30") from his observations of the Sun to determine the centre of Australia are rather mystifying. His journal is transcribed digitally at Project Gutenberg and confirms the quote. They cannot represent latitude which is a maximum of ±90º, nor longitude as that would be somewhere in the Indian Ocean west of the W.A. coast. They must represent the azimuth angle of the Sun, however in April of any year at the latitude of the approximate centre of Australia, the Sun rises in the north-east at around 77º, passes through north and sets in the north-west at around 282º as measured clockwise from north. If Stuart was using due south as his datum, then 111º anti-clockwise from south may be close to a sunrise azimuth, but an unusual method it would be. Any comments would be appreciated.
