Is an Overseas Citizen of India considered a Commonwealth citizen by the United Kingdom? JDM1991 (talk) 00:06, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Does India have more than one category of citizenship? Frenchmalawi (talk) 04:55, 21 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

overhaul needed

edit

The article needs a major overhaul for it to be an article about "Commonwealth citizenship"; a concept that appears to exist in at least a dozen countries. If it is just an article about UK law, it needs to be restyled. Frenchmalawi (talk) 04:53, 21 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Overall:
Pass/Fail:

  • There's contradictory information when the article states that a Commonwealth Citizen is a national or citizen of any commonwealth country, but later states that Indian nationals who are not citizens are not Commonwealth Citizens.
    • Changed phrasing in lead and acquisition section.
  • Can there be more depth discussing the rights and duties associated with being a Commonwealth Citizen? Perhaps a section for the privileges granted in each member state.
    • Hmm I'm not sure what you'd want for this. There's not that much that the status confers on a person outside of the UK, and I think I laid that out in prose already. What do you find lacking? I don't think a table of benefits would be useful here if that's what you're suggesting since there's so many member states that don't really distinguish between foreigners and Commonwealth citizens other than just by the name.
      • What is traveling like? What is immigration like? What kinds of travel documents do you need? Do you need a visa? Do you just need proof of being a Commonwealth citizen?
      • Do commonwealth citizens have the right to work? The right to own property?
      • Maybe a mention of how in most contexts Commonwealth citizens are treated as if foreigners (if that's the case) if there really isn't anything else to say.
        • Added a line saying that there's no free movement or labour and most member countries just treat Commonwealth citizens as if they were foreigners.
  • In the Acquisition and loss section it discusses that it is automatic when one is a citizen of a Commonwealth country, but then lists exceptions. It would be clearer if Schedule 3 was mentioned first in that section, and then the article clarified what that means.
    • Tweaked phrasing in lead and acquisition should help.
  • Does commonwealth citizenship follow the member country's laws or the UK's laws for citizenship inheritance?
    • Commonwealth citizenship isn't passed on or acquired by any rules other than just being a citizen of a member state.
      • In Acquisition and loss could you mention that?
        • Added that explicitly.
  • Can you add a map that highlights all of the nations on the Schedule 3 list?
    • Added.
  • "citizens from other Commonwealth states are entitled to certain rights, including eligibility to vote in elections and serve in government positions" in certain countries? or all of them?
    • Added number of countries for voting.

@Starsandwhales: Gentle nudge for feedback. Horserice (talk) 22:24, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sorry things have been really busy lately. The earliest I'll be able to get back to this is in 2 weeks. If you would like a second reviewer I can do that. starsandwhales (talk) 04:00, 8 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
No worries at all. Yeah, a second reviewer would be great. Always good to get more eyes for feedback. Horserice (talk) 07:16, 8 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Horserice: Noticed the request for a second pair of eyes, and had a read through to see if I could assist. Some things I thought were worth considering, from first (and second/third) pass review are:

  • Where more than one reference is given at the end of a sentence, it can look untidy. A great way to deal with this is to group these references, so the references are nested in just one reference holder.
  • The thumbnail infographic on Commonwealth countries in the Acquisition and loss section could be added to the article info-box instead, to ground the text that follows.
  • Some references are linked to limited access resources, which makes online verification difficult (while this is sometimes unavoidable, particularly for some types of references, adding a more accessible secondary source can assist).
  • Some parts of the background section didn’t flow as easily as those in other sections, so you may wish to re-examine that section.
  • You may find Mann’s work of interest [1] and this little overview of the Australian history relevant to this [2]. It might be worth mentioning the 1926 Balfour Declaration and the 1947 British Commonwealth Conference on Nationality and Citizenship in the background section.

Hope that is of some assistance to you. I think the core is sound and the above are things you can consider in advancing this article. Kangaresearch 08:09, 13 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Closing comment

Both the nominator Starsandwhales and reviewer Horserice have abandoned this nomination, and Horserice never did make any edits after Kangaresearch graciously had posted a second opinion. I posted on Horserice's talk page and gave until the end of August for a response here (or there), noting that my assumption would be a lack of interest to continue if nothing was heard. Since nothing was, I am closing this nomination as unsuccessful. A new nomination is welcome once the issues raised have been addressed, though if so I hope there will be better follow-through. Best of luck going forward. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:20, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
