Merger proposal

To clarify, there was a merger discussion proposal created by this diff, calling for discussion, on May 27. The proposer did not open an actual discussion section. This section is the discussion, opened by me. I was incorrect in my first post here, in believing that the discussion had already been opened and that this Talk page had been deleted. I think that editor ScottHW believes that a list-article about the Omaha ones alone is a worthy topic, and is developing it. From afar, I preferred one list-article about all the community gardens in Nebraska. But, the Omaha ones alone meet Wikipedia-notability standards, as there is plenty of coverage about them, and if one editor wants to develop it that way, I say let 'em go at it.

I see no urgency to this merger proposal after a lot of editor attention has been applied to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dundee Community Garden ‎. Let the interested editors do what they want for a while. Hopefully this Merger proposal will just die after a while. --doncram 13:08, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Wow... Apparently User:Pigsonthewing unilaterally decided to Merge this article, even though a discussion on that topic had just been started by User:doncram, and then repeated that Merge edit several more times when it was reverted. Poor form User:Pigsonthewing.

The reason an article on Community gardens in Omaha, Nebraska shouldn't be merged into Community gardens in Nebraska is because the community gardening effort in Omaha is entirely unique from the rest of the state. Nebraska is a heavily agricultural state; Omaha is the only incorporated city in the state that approaches "urban" characteristics (and possibly Lincoln, Nebraska). The activities of community gardening, and urban farming, as are on-going in Omaha, are not present through the rest of the state because there are no other urban areas.

Significant cooperation and interaction happens between gardens within Omaha e.g. Tour de Gardens, as referenced in the Dundee Community Garden article. Members of gardens actively work to help others founding new gardening and urban farming projects, fostering an entire community of community gardens... within Omaha. That is the focus of the List article that I started.

Additionally, the list of Community gardens in Nebraska will be made up almost entirely of Community gardens in Omaha, Nebraska; it is a mistake to broaden the category when a more narrow one would be more appropriate.

I've asked Doncram elsewhere to substantiate his claim of having already started a discussion, but he's so far ignored the request. Perhaps you could point to it? There is absolutely no need (and certainly not yet enough content) for two articles, but feel free to propose moving [Community gardens in Nebraska]] to Community gardens in Omaha, Nebraska. This is a case of content forking; there is insufficient data for either article to stand alone, the Portland list, in contrast, covers a city larger than Omaha. One way or the other, one good article is superior to two crummy ones. Montanabw^(talk) 20:18, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Portland isn't much larger, if referring to cities (as these article titles do) rather than metropolitan areas, but there isn't an article for the Portland list to be merged to. I agree it's unnecessary to have two articles (Nebraska and Omaha, Nebraska) at present. Peter James (talk) 22:45, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

This is an ongoing discussion, which can continue after the AFD is closed. The AFD (at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Community gardens in Omaha, Nebraska) may end with KEEPing both articles. At the AFD, I complained about the AFD because this merger proposal was already in progress. But given the AFD is ongoing now, i am not sure we should continue here for now. Wait until AFD concludes, and if both articles are Kept, then continue here? --doncram 22:21, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
