Origin of name?
editDoes anyone know the origin of the name "Connaught Place"? It's conspicuously lacking from the article. --Doradus (talk) 13:46, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
There are a few possibilities. Cannaught was the offical spelling of Connacht a province of Ireland (Four ancient divisions of the island, today often cited in realtion to Rugby) during British rule of Ireland. There was a regiment called the Cannaught Rangers who were recruited mainly from the province of the same name. It was posted in India for long periods. There should be more information on here somewhere but i am not certain that the place is named after this regiment. The regiment was disbanded when the Irish Free State came into existence in 1922.
There are two other places named 'Cannaught Place' one in London and the other in Hong Kong. So it is most certainly a colonial legacy.
I believe that the most likely answer would be related to the Duke of Cannaught. The title was held by a member of the British Royal family, according to the article on this site about the title there have only been two. I have not yet looked further into this but it is certainly a key element of this article that is missing. -- ConsulHibernia (talk) 15:31, 3 November 2008 (UTC) (talk) 15:27, 3 November 2008

Better
editI think this image can replace the current image of central park. If someone can manage to resize the picture to fit.
Alternatively, it could be used as a landscape picture at the bottom of the page.

Rajiv Chowk
editAs far as I know, Rajiv Chowk is the name of a metro station near Connaught Place. Can someone provide a reference for Connaught Place being officially named as Rajiv Chowk? - 14.139.188.174 (talk) 20:34, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
