British or English?

edit

We need to address this to avoid edit-warring. Should she be considered British or English? 195.178.166.244 (talk) 08:23, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

I saw this at WP:VPM. Nationality in the UK can be a thorny issue, per Wikipedia:Nationality of people from the United Kingdom it's best to go with how most reliable sources describe the subject or how the subject describes themselves. Having looked through the refs used in the article, and tracked down the now deadlink bio on her website[1], none actually has one way or the other. It could be that the best way is to remove the mention and let readers make up their own minds based on where she was born. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 19:32, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
That would last about 5 minutes before someone helpfully fills the gap. I expect she thinks of herself as English. Johnbod (talk) 17:55, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I expect that is true, but can't find any sourcing. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 18:09, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Otherwise we could write "British/English" so we don't take a definitive stance on the question. --195.178.166.244 (talk) 18:48, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't support that, it's very messy and is also not supported by any reliable sources. There aren't sources to says she's British, and aren't sources to say she's English. So saying both isn't an improvement. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 18:54, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Does it make sense to label her British in the short description but English in the article text? --195.178.166.244 (talk) 06:19, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
No, whatever is decided should apply to both. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 09:31, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

I would make sure to be consistent. So either British or English. Looking at other British artists, the consensus is to be as specific as possible here. British could be anywhere in the UK and if we designate someone as English/Scottish/Welsh etc. then that would cause less confusion. Look at David Bowie for instance, who is described as an English singer, Tom Jones (singer) as Welsh or Jim Kerr who is described as Scottish. Karst (talk) 08:30, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sources seem to be split on the question. Search "connie talbot nationality" on Google. There seems to be a slight edge for British. --195.178.166.244 (talk) 17:42, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Searching for that on Google doesn't bring back any reliable sources, and many appear to have scrapped Wikipedia at some point for their article. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 17:45, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • This is another case where Wikipedia has difficulty because of its obsession with nationality. Surely when reliable sources do not give us either the thing to do is simply leave out the nationality. I note that she made her name on "Britain's Got Talent" not "England's Got Talent", but I doubt if that is relevant. Whether I call myself English or British depends completely on context - if I am discussing international football with a Scot then I am English, but if I am discussing varieties of the English language with an American then I am British. Phil Bridger (talk) 09:24, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Added British and referenced it. Leaving it out will in all likelihood cause further issues. Karst (talk) 21:49, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
AD's concern is that available sources mirror the nationality specified in the Wikipedia article. Are you sure this is an independent source? --195.178.166.244 (talk) 14:22, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Sharon Mawer is an Allmusic editor who regularly cited here without any issue. Karst (talk) 15:06, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
