Overhaul

This page needs a major rewrite by a natively English speaking writer. It's full of grammatical errors and misc information that doesn't really belong. 70.71.17.90 (talk) 06:13, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Classification

K1 is classified as submachine gun by the developer and the manufacturer (http://www.sntdaewoo.com/template/html/company/S&Tdaewoo.pdf - company E-catalog by current manufacturer, S&T Motiv). Do not change the type to carbine. The caliber has no relation with the type of the gun. There are plenty of guns that uses assault rifle cartridge yet still defined as submachine gun. Uh, no. A submachine gun is specifically categorized as a fully-automatic firearm that fires PISTOL cartridges. The cartridge has EVERYTHING to do with the classification of the gun. The S. Koreans labeling it as a submachine gun is just a semantic circle-jerk that East Asian cultures are infamous for. (180.59.215.134 (talk) 13:37, 5 September 2015 (UTC))

The link to the catalogue designating it as a submachine gun is dead, but I've found another catalogue, supposedly from the 2000s, which states the same at https://www.smallarmsreview.com/archive/detail.arc.entry.cfm?arcid=20136

Nonetheless, I agree with the notion that the weapon is indeed a carbine rather than a submachine gun. The developer may call it whatever they want (Assuming the correctly translated the term in the first place), a submachine gun fires pistol cartridges, something which 5.56×45mm clearly is not. If we are linking to the article for submachine gun, this weapon should only fire pistol cartridges, and submachine guns with rifle calibers are only a historical classification. I have modified the article to reflect this and this should not be changed without further consensus. 93 22:51, 18 August 2017 (UTC)

K1A designer

Some credit should be given to Chung Seong Gu, the production manager at DPI, for the concept and design of the K1A. Chung was the engineer who was sent to Colt to study their manufacturing techniques and transfer the Technical Data Package for the M16, under license, to Korea. The K1A came about because of the fear that Colt, under new ownership, would cancel the licensing agreement over the sale of M16 parts to Singapore. Chung also worked with Korean ADD on the K2 design. By the way, the flash hider on the K1A was so effective that Ed Owen at BATF ruled it a suppressor and banned it's importation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.21.113.218 (talk) 06:05, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Submachine gun?

Despite the South Korean government calling it a "submachine gun," this is quite clearly an assault carbine. I believe that the classification should be changed to "assault carbine" on the official textboxes. I believe we can say how the South Korean government calls it a submachine gun in the various other sections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edward hahm (talkcontribs) 10:16, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
