Dual code international?
editNo international rugby league appearances are mentioned in the article. Was he in fact a DCI ? -Sticks66 12:43, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Right, this appears to be what could have happened. Jones seemed to flit between where the money was, born in Aberdare, but plays for Treherbert, then Aberdare pays more and he jumps ship. Aberdare slash their payments, he goes back to Treherbert. The WRU find out about the payments and in 1907 he gets banned from rugby union for life. Jones then joins the professional Merthyr league. In 1908 the All Golds tour Great Britain for the first time and play a Wales XV in Aberdare, which they just lose 9-8. Now I have info that says Jones is the only Welsh international to ever beat New Zealand in both codes, but it only mentions the 1905 union game.
The fact that an ex-international, who 2 years earlier had beaten New Zealand, the 'greatest' team the world had ever seen, who lived in Aberdare where the game is taking place, who now plays league rugby is not in the squad is unlikely. We need to find the team line up for the 1908 match between Wales and the All Golds. FruitMonkey (talk) 13:33, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wait a minute the Telegraph article, that links to the page (reference 2), states he played that game and scored the winning try. I'd call that proof.FruitMonkey (talk) 13:36, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Did David 'Tarw' Jones play for Treherbert RLFC?
editThe David 'Tarw' Jones article mentions Treherbert RLFC, but they are not shown in the infobox, and the Treherbert RLFC article doesn't mention David 'Tarw' Jones. Did he actually play for them? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 12:03, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- I have one source that states he joined 'Treherbert Northern Union' which is Wayne Thomas, A Century of Welsh Rugby Players, but that doesn't mention him playing for Merthyr, which almost all the other sources do. I think it's an error, I think he joined Merthyr in October 1907 and finished his career there. FruitMonkey (talk) 12:42, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Birthplace
editI have amended your page to reflect the fact that Dai Jones was not born in Aberaman but in Tynewydd which is next to/part of Treherbert. He was my fathers uncle. I think he went to play for Aberdare (then called Aberaman RFC I believe) when he was posted there on joining the police. Scrabbling2002 (talk) 14:55, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- Let me check into this further, I have done much work on this article and there is confusion regarding his birth. Though this is unsurprising considering his name is David Jones. The references so far state Aberaman, which trumps your own personal knowledge unless you have a written reference backing your claim. I'll spend some time on it this week. There is no confusion on my part on this subject. I do not know what references you have used but this is part of my family history. My great grandmother (his mother) lived in Tynewydd with my grandmother and my father until she died. To save you the effort I can supply a copy of the 1901 census which clearly states his place of birth as Treherbert. I also have a copy of his obituary/funeral which also states that he was born in Tynewydd, Treherbert. I am new to making contribution on this site and if I had known how to contact you directly I would have done so because I have other info which might be of interest. I am pleased you have gone to the trouble of making this entry because I think he deserves to be remembered and I thank you for your efforts. I just want it to be correct and I think my amendment sheds a different light on his return to playing for Treherbert - his home town.Scrabbling2002 (talk) 23:41, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- Are there any deatils of David "Tarw" Jones actual date of birth? ESPN just gives circa-1881, but according to FreeBMD there were 252 births of David Jones' registered in Wales in 1881. Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:15, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
