Jew? Anglican?

edit

The following comment, claiming to be by his sister, was left in the main Wikipedia space at Category:Scottish Jews. I have moved the comment to that Talk page, but I thought that editors of this article ought to be aware of it:

"How can David Knopfler be considered a Scottish Jew when his mother was (and still) is an English Anglican?! I wish you would take this off, as all the Jew Hate sites have his name up. Ruth Kennedy (his sister) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.69.35.146 (talkcontribs) 16:39, 25 August 2006"

I will add him to the English, and Anglican, cats too in the meantime. Thanks. --Mais oui! 08:27, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, upon reflection, I am going to remove him from the religion cat. We do not have any referenced evidence that either Judaism or Anglicanism are notable elements in his life. Admittedly the Jews cats are not just about religion, but also about ethnicity/culture, but if this is going to be contentious we had better remove it altogether. --Mais oui! 08:35, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

English?

edit

How can he be English if he was born in Glasgow? I've changed it to British. 213.121.151.174 (talk) 09:03, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why has it been changed back to English, without discussion on the talk page first? He's from Scotland. Setting nationality to "British" seems to me a good way to remove any confusion, seeing as the term encompasses both English and Scottish (as well as Welsh and Northern Irish), and is after all the official nationality of everybody from the UK. 213.121.151.174 (talk) 15:08, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

As per the reference that is in place. Why did you change the description to British without discussion or bothering to check the clearly visible reference?

92.12.207.220 (talk) 13:03, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I did check it, he's still British. 213.121.151.174 (talk) 15:16, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

He says on his site (per the cite - which, as it is his site is less than ideal to use as a reference - unless we assume it's a diddle and not his site) that he is "English" - well that's his opinion of himself, what does his passport say about that? :p I'd prefer "British" as the lad was born in Scotland so unless there is a more reliable cite out there that would give a better weighting than to how he would like to be seen himself, which could be written up as such and then the cite would be unquestionable - I would go with British - per the passport.--Alf melmac 17:17, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image/other issues

edit

The response of ip 86.132.250.24 to their recent repeated unexplained removals of info and picture is here - it states that "the photograph is removed because it is not copyright approved" - is the ip David Knopfler? I've asked on the ip talk page if it is connected to Mr K. If the image was taken in a photo-restricted environment requiring Mr K's permission, then an email/OTRS ticket might be the right direction.

The ip also states "The edit complained about about above was done because it removes inaccurate, fatuous and irrelevant information" which is the English bit - an update on the Excuses page references wiki insisting on this usage but it's out of context, I've edited that bit anyway.

The ip was blocked for vandalism, I've asked the blocking admin to consider an unblock to allow dialogue--Alf melmac 22:13, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

This is getting really silly - the authorised pic has now vanished along with the unauthorised one - and Wiki especially asked me for permission to upload it - It was called David-Knopfler-myspace.jpg ... sigh DK —Preceding unsigned comment added by DEEKAY8 (talkcontribs) 23:57, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

"photo-restricted environment requiring Mr K's permission"? What would that be, then? Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 01:31, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Terms and conditions of attendance at a concert are often printed on the ticket reverse. - NEC tickets (for example) have as the second condition on their tickets say "The unauthorised use of photographic equipment is prohibited in the auditorium. Please note that recording equipment and mobile phones are not permitted in the Arena building."--Alf melmac 06:17, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
The myspace photo I deleted, then restored, is the only picture that was authorized on OTRS. I need to personally fix the image once I have the chance. Also, as for the concert photo, I am not certain what the rules are about that. I know the tickets for concerts and sporting events say we cannot take photos, but many still do anyways and we still have many on here and on the Commons. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 06:27, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nowhere does such wording say or effect the transfer of copyright of such pictures to the performer; the uploader of the picture has asserted their ownership of copyright. We don't even know if the photographer was a concert-ticket holder. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:21, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, my apologies, I'm trying to speak for the ip here, and obviously I should have used the exact words "requiring permission" instead of "requiring Mr K's permission".--Alf melmac 11:57, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nobody's permission is needed, other than that of the copyright holder. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:08, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Per my example, the copyright holder there is the NEC or the person who ignores the terms and conditions?--Alf melmac 14:30, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
In your example, the copyright holder is still the photographer. The NEC can have the photographer ejected if they so choose, but they do not own the copyright. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:43, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I hope DK (or his proxy) reads this discussion.--Alf melmac 14:49, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Gentlemen, everything is being taken care of on OTRS. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 01:53, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure it is, I've reposted to the ip again to see if they wish to email the foundation to sort it out.--Alf melmac 12:23, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wiki alf, I am speaking to him on the OTRS system. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 16:27, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah good, thanks. I was concerned as the ip(s) used by him (or the proxy) to date have mostly been ignored and more recently blocked rather than listened to, concern assuaged. Thanks.--Alf melmac 16:57, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please don't place links to new references in the External links sections of biography articles. They belong here until used, and integrated into the article. I've moved some references here, hoping to avoid yet another link farm from shooting upward! If amy reference sources are placed here, and are either not usable for some reason, or are already used up, just cross them off the list, like this! Thank you --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:02, 10 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Back to photos!

edit

I see the need for photos of each member of Dire Straits has been a complaint for some time. Having somehow been crowned the "Wikiphoto fairy" in the past couple of years, I've been attempting to rectify this band as I have for other artists along with editing duties :) I believe Mark Knopfler has a sufficient number of pics I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, and I've beem searching for and/or negotiating photos for all the other band members. If anyone finds photos of the other bandmates, please leave me a note on my talk page so I can perhaps contact the photographer for permission to use them, if you don't have the time yourself. I have just uploaded some photos of John Illsley and David Knopfler, and a couple poor photos of the band, but still need to find photos of Hal Lindes, Pick Withers, and the others. Thanks. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:14, 10 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Photo of David Knopfler

edit

I uploaded a photo of Mark Knopfler and Hal Lindes, but was mistakenly told that it was of Mark Knopfler and his brother, David Knopfler. I believe someone contacted David Knopfler about this, because the photographer (a friend) received notice from David. Both emailed me. David Knopfler thus uploaded his photo to Wikimedia Commons, and I just uploaded it here. Whew! A whole lot of rap over one little photo--- but very much worth it! :) --Leahtwosaints (talk) 12:16, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Knopfler's sound and effects

edit

No one has addressed Knopfler's sound. He is a true singer-songwriter in his solo work, but his music isn't mentioned. In addition, his guitars, etc. should have a section and expand the article.

British or English or Scottish? Please take part in the RfC

Reference Correction

edit

One of the references to an article "Songstuff: David Knopfler", by Nigel Lawry, contains a broken link. The correct link to the article is http://music.songstuff.com/article/david_knopfler/

I am new to editing and looked for how to edit this but could only get as far as it being a reflist.

Can I suggest the correction? Song-writing-muse (talk) 09:56, 8 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
