Location discrepancy
editThe article says it is located at the Eastern side of 232rd Ave. west of its junction with Iowa Highway 62
, at 42°11′17″N 90°37′20″W / 42.188056°N 90.622222°W. I've corrected 232rd to 232nd.
Looking at OSM, Bing, and Google maps, the location description does not appear to be correct. Google and OSM shown that 232nd Ave. begins at 167th St., running northerly to 180th St. where it becomes 232nd St., continuing easterly to end at 250th Ave. (County Road Y61) (Bing calls this segment 232nd Ave. instead of St.). Neither 232nd Ave. nor 232nd St. appear to intersect IA-62. IA-62 does not come far enough west to intersect a road that would exist in the position of 232nd Ave. until much further south at 42°05′15″N 90°37′41″W / 42.087370°N 90.628183°W, where it intersects 231st Ave.
Even the coordinates are suspect, based on the sat imagery. If I understand correctly that these are standing structures, they should be visible, but are not, unless completely covered by the nearby trees. The structure west of the road looks like it could be the barn, though, based on the description.
An accurate description of the location, at least, would seem to be: "232nd Ave., about 500 ft southerly of its intersection with 180th St."
The NPS site is currently down, or it might be able to shed some light. I could not immediately find another source. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 09:06, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Update: With the NPS site back up, I was able to get more info from the description, converting its "UTM 15N 696360E 4673185N" to 42 11 17.17N, 90 37 19.65W (NAD27) and transforming to 42 11 17.23N, 90 37 20.12W (WGS84). This is also consistent with the PLSS boundary description of "IA Fifth Principal ... T85N R3E Sec 9 SW 1/4 [of] NW 1/4". Based on the description and size of the buildings, satellite imagery, and the above, the actual center of the "approx. 190' x 70'" parcel that encompasses the buildings is 42.18839, -90.62162 (WGS84), about 200' ENE of the existing coords. There are also maps and diagrams in the NPS doc that confirm it's the right property and buildings. I'm going to change the descriptions and co-ordinates based on this interpretation. It would still be good if we could get someone local to verify the street names and location (there should be a plaque/marker at the site). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 08:47, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
