I’m in an ethnic studies/women’s gender studies class and one of our assignments was to look up two Wikipedia pages; one about a person from a marginalized group, and one from a non-marginalized group. I compared Debbye Turner’s Wikipedia page with that of James Harriot, both DVMs, and the differences were astounding. There is a ton of information and detail that’s present in his page that you simply don’t see in hers (here’s the link in case you’d like to see for yourself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Herriot . I think more information about her childhood and upbringing should be included as to provide context to what made her want to do beauty pageants. Additionally, what made her decide to leave veterinary field and go into television. Some more information about her other talents and how they came to be should be considered as well as contributions or works done while she was in the veterinary field. In addition to more contextual and background information, there seems to be some lack of clarity in the information provided. The article says that she won the Miss America title in 1990, and later it states that she received her DVM degree in 1991. Are we to believe that she worked on her DVM while she was doing the pageant, or that she completed veterinary school in one year? Maybe it’s correct, but I think that the references for those facts should be verified. I also notice that more than half of the article speaks of her beauty pageant title. Although I do feel that is pertinent and important information given that she is one of only eight Miss America winners, she also has many other years of her life that seems to have been just skimmed over. It’s a good start but needs some work.
