History, Book, and Movie

edit

This article really should include a section about differences between the film, the book, and the historical facts. Das Baz, aka Erudil 18:48, 6 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree with the above. I want to comment on the confused timeline of the movie which conflates the events of 1941-42 and 1942-43 into one timeframe. It is suggested by the events in the movie that the main action timeframe is late summer 1941 (death of Bielski's parents) to mid 1942. USHMM states their activity of operation as 1942-1944 http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10007563. The Bielski parents were murdered in Dec 1941.
Sending emissaries to the ghetto did not occur until 1942. The march through the swamps happened in 1943.
In the the movie, the harsh winter depicted is 1941-42. The director confirms it in "The making of Defiance" commentary, saying "this is the harsh winter of 1941-42, which stopped Germany's advance into Russia." Separately, the last frame of the movie states "They will spend two more years in the forest" which again indicates 1942 as the closing year of the movie (as Soviets were in Byelorussia in the summer of 1944).
This timeline is problematic for several reasons. First, it suggests a much longer timeline for the large scale operation of Bielski brothers. The first winter was not the time that they were sheltering hundreds of Jews.
Second implication is that the Soviet partisan movement was well established in the winter of 1941, which is historically incorrect. This also implies that the large scale reprisal operations conducted by the Germans from 1942 would have been justified by the well organized resistance in the prior winter.
