Origin of Dun or Doon

edit

Is the word "Dun" (Doon) truly indigenous to India from before the British Raj, or is this an Anglo-Indian word likening valleys between the Siwalik Hills and Lesser Himalaya to the Doon Valley of southwestern Scotland? Perhaps they share the characteristics of being fairly open valleys surrounded by low mountains. LADave 10:19, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The word 'dun' means valley and 'dehra' means settlement or camp. Dehra came from before and Dun probably from the British. Tanyasingh (talk) 07:11, 28 February 2020 (UTC) TSReply

Provsional captial?

edit

Is there any declaration/document which states that Dehradun is the provisional capital? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Manavendra pratap (talkcontribs) 08:01, 15 May 2007 (UTC). It can also be seen on the official website of the state http://uk.gov.in/ that Dehradun is temporary capital. Also, The State Government have constituted a commission called "Rajdhani Chayan Aayog" uk.gov.in/pages/view/425-rajdhani-chayan-ayog for choosing a suitable capital (including Dehradun). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Satisch (talkcontribs) 08:22, 2 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Posting Advertisements

edit

People should refrain putting names of privately funded institutions. They are absolutely not required. I believe when we portray a city. We don't really have to show, we have McDonalds, Barista etc. Same holds true for schools. People of Dehradun are aware of all the school names (Dehradun holds roughly more than 200 ICSE ISC CBSE & UP Board schools). Some of the old schools, which have been there pre-british rule, or atleast have completed 25 years of existence -have been left intact. Publicising it on a page which represents the entire city, is intolerable.

You can search Chicago in Wiki Search to look at the city page - to understand what a city page should look like.

We wish to portray the city as a city of cultural heritage and the value as a city - to the society and to the country. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Debasish Dey (talkcontribs) 09:35, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

However you wish to portray the city, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with strict policies on content. This is necessary to maintain factual information only. Regarding climate

edit

The climate section had average temperatures table but the reference pointed to the climate table of New Delhi. I have removed the table for the same reason. Please try to include the temperatures for Dehradun. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mayank1312511411 (talkcontribs) 17:31, 29 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

History

edit

This section starts with assertions about the contents of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which are legends, not historical records. It's like citing the Book of Exodus to support claims about the history of the Middle East; that's not what is meant by "history".

I intend to remove these claims. MrDemeanour (talk) 16:05, 21 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
