Article should not suppress pertinent information that Deidre Downs married a same sex partner

edit

Deidre Downs just married her girlfriend Abbott Jones. The article makes no mention of her sexual oritentation, same-sex marriage, or the wedding ceremony. The fact that Downs is bisexual should not be omitted from her article. Somebody asked me "Is that really necessary." Yes, it most certainly IS necessary. Information should not be withheld from an article simply because the information might be embarrassing or controversial. There is NO legitimate reason for discussion of Downs' sexual orientation to be omitted from her article. Anthony22 (talk) 19:40, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

You’re the one saying “embarrassing or controversial”. I just think it’s unnecessary as I said. The previous paragraph didn’t say “she married her boyfriend Andrew” so why single out “she married her girlfriend Abbott.” Shouldn’t they get equal treatment? Does having a same-sex partner really need to be highlighted in this day & age? I thought/hoped we were past that. Now if we can find a source that she’s the first lesbian Miss America, that sort of thing would be encyclopaedic but otherwise I think the original was just fine and your edits aren’t improving anything ... "She married Abbott Jones, an attorney and writer" is very ambiguous and misleading terminology. "Abbott" is usually associated with being a man's name. Do you remember Abbott and Costello? This is the reason why "Abbott" should be identified as a woman.

If my edits aren't improving anything, why don't you revert the lowercase words back to uppercase? The overwhelming majority of Wikipedia articles are very poorly written and need editing.

In the case of Deidre Downs, her same-sex marriage is newsworthy and deserves mention in the article. If her sexual orientation had been made public before the Miss America Pageant was held, I don't think that she would have won the title. Also, I don't know of too many cases of openly gay doctors. Perhaps it should, but I still don't think that's the best way to slip it in there. So far most of the articles in the news are just piggybacking off People, hopefully something more substantial may be published. I would have left the capitals in as proper nouns being the names of subjects but I'm happy to leave those there for now. The rest provided no net gain. I note you have a history of nitpicky edits along the lines of yours on this article. ... Thanks,   CJ [a Kiwi] in  Oz  05:28, 25 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I will agree that we should identify the gender of her spouse, because coverage shows that to be significant information, and because that is not easily carried by the name (if she had married a Brenda, this might be a different situation.) The BabyNameWizard identifies Abbott as a male name, but also indicates that it's rare, never having been in the top 1000 most popular names.
However, we must avoid labeling her as a "bisexual" unless we have a good source that she currently identifies herself as that. It is certainly not something that we can assume just on the basis of her marriage history; there are plenty of lesbians who have a mixed-sex marriage in their past. --Nat Gertler (talk) 15:48, 26 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @NatGertler:. What do you think the best wording would be? I still think "Married her girlfriend Abbott..." is clunky because as I said above, we wouldn't say "married her boyfriend" (at least I don't think such wording would be common) and besides, they're fiancées at that point not girlfriends. ... "Downes remarried in 2018 in a ceremony at [wherever it was]. Her wife, Abbott Jones, is an attorney and writer." --Nat Gertler (talk) 01:05, 27 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Done! Thanks so much. ... Thanks,   CJ [a Kiwi] in  Oz  02:18, 27 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
