Nobody is entitled to select works to be listed and exclude others

I don't understand why DrThneed ‎feels s/he is entitled to select articles and insist that the section be titled "Selected works." Wikipedia doesn't have a selection committee. Toddst1 (talk) 01:37, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

I included a list of some of her works as that is useful to the reader. Clearly a complete list would be overkill. In the absence of a community-agreed guideline about lists of publications on academic papers, I used my own commonsense as an editor to select her most highly cited work and other papers that seemed important. I don't object to you retitling the list as "Partial list of works" but that really seems to be splitting hairs to me, the list is the same and somebody had to select it!

I also note that you placed a potential conflict of interest flag on my talk page in relation to this page. I have answered on the talk page, but I find it offensive that you are accusing me of having an undeclared conflict of interest, which I do not. DrThneed (talk) 01:47, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Now it's a "partial list" containing the selected works. They are still selected, as outlined above, and the header is therefore slightly less accurate. But maybe that's a price worth paying if it ends this silly discussion. K. Oblique 02:29, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

"Selected publications" or "Selected research" is a common heading in articles about academics. I've used it many times. In lieu of any WP:WPBIO guidelines about which (of a very long list) of publications should be selected, the editor chooses them: usually the most cited or influential. Just as the editor selects which of the many facts about a person's life are worth including in the article. Important publications need to be mentioned, but Wikipedia is not the place for a complete publications listing. Hence a selection. @Toddst1, as others have said, this is a very common and uncontroversial approach. 'Selected' in this instance just means "a selection", it doesn't imply that Wikipedia has somehow denoted these works as being the best works of the article subject. In case it is helpful, here are some featured articles that use sections titled 'Selected works':

• William Gibson
• Ernest Hemingway
• William S. Sadler
• Margaret Fuller

@Toddst1: If you don't find it helpful to see that *featured* articles also take the "Selected works" approach, then that's fine. Giantflightlessbirds has a good suggestion to deal with any substantive concerns about the works that have been selected; i.e. discuss on this talk page where you disagree.
