Talk:Den Helder

As someone who was born here, I'd like to add something about the war-years, which were dramatic, and worth commemorating.

Well, why don't you? Ottens 4 July 2005 19:16 (UTC)

Why its called 'Den Helder'

edit

I found this text in the article; 'The area likely began being called Helledore ("Hell's Door" or "Hell's Gate", later on Den Helsdeur) because of the "hellish" fortifications that prevented enemy ships from sailing into the Zuyderzee.'

at first, it wasnt called 'Den Helsdeur' but just 'helsdeur' mainly 'helder' and later on it was changed to 'Den Helder' because the people named it that way.

at second, the fortifications werent the reason why its called 'helledore'/'helder' but it was because of the 'Marsdiep' the water between now Den Helder and Texel, the 'Marsdiep' is about 45 meters deep and many ships were lost, thats why it was called 'hells door'

Can someone change this? my english isnt that good --Larshei (talk) 20:33, 29 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Quite obviously this has been changed in the meantime, but just for the record, we don't have any citations to support either of these theories. The word "Helder" might as well have a completely different etymology, for all we know. --84.190.84.220 (talk) 22:23, 21 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
