The apostrophe

There is some reference in this article as to the reasons for the inclusion of the apostrophe in the original incarnation of the character's name, indeed extending into a comment later in the article that removal of the apostrophe somehow changed its pronunciation as well.

My explanation? The apostrophe indicates not possession but a shortening of the name - indicating a missing "y" from the character's first name. Bugsy is a far more commonly used name than Bugs, and would most likely have appealed to the producers and animators as indicative of some sort of small-time crim, very much in keeping with the demeanour of the character. However "Bugsy Bunny" is somewhat cumbersome to say, which, I assert, led the producers to adopt an abbreviated form. If anyone can come up with any DOCUMENTARY evidence why this would not be the case I will leave the article as it is, otherwise after 12 months from this discussion entry I will take it upon myself to change it.

I also strongly contest the notion that the inclusion of the apostrophe would have changed the pronunciation of the characters name from "Bugs" to anything else. The assertion in the article that Bugs' would somehow be pronounced "Bugs-es" is simply ludicrous and wrong. If anyone can show any evidence to suggest the public or producers would ever have pronounced the name "Bugs-es" during the early days of the character I'm - like Bugs - all ears.

Move

For various reasons I suggest that this article be moved to "Evolution of Bugs Bunny" or something similar. It is not clear from this article that there ever was a stable character called "Bugs' Bunny", and it is not clear from the title what this article is on about. Was never called "Happy Rabbit"

Animation historian David Gerstein told me on Facebook that the name Happy Rabbit was never used by anyone but Mel Blanc, and that it was nothing more than a humorous and fanciful tale he liked to tell in the 70s and 80s. Factual accuracy in question? Redirect, delete, other?

Attempts have been made to redirect this article to Bugs Bunny. I have reverted this as there has been no discussion. The comment on the second attempt to redirect was:

"This is myth that has been debunked several times by Animation Historian David Gerstein."

I hold no opinion on whether this is correct or not.

The original author of this article seems to have been problematic but this article has been substantially edited by other people since it was created in 2008 so one might expect that somebody would have noticed the hoax if there was one, particularly since there was an AfD in 2008 where the possibility of a hoax wasn't even raised. While long term hoaxes have sometimes gone undetected in Wikipedia this is not common and I feel that an article of this vintage should not be wiped out without some discussion. I feel that AfD is possibly the correct venue. In the meantime I have put a "Disputed" tag on it. --DanielRigal (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
