Requesting photos
editWould be nice to have more photos from this ultimate last frontier island! Anybody having pictures from this island, please consider sharing some of them thru the Wikipedia. Mainly requesting highly informative pictures such those from the nature, buildings, geology, transportation, etc. Thank you in advance! Baldwin040 (talk) 03:23, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Requested move
edit- The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the proposal was was move to Little Diomede. - Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 19:52, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
This page was originally a few lines of information about the City of Diomede in Little Diomede island, Alaska. Now when new content has been added it covers the entire island and not just the city. The new page of Little Diomede would include information from both the city and the island overall like it already does.
There will be more information about the geology and characteristics which applies on both the city and the island. I don't think there would be enough information yet to have separate pages for both. Also the new content does not all apply to the Big Diomede, Russia either or is unverified and/or unreferenced.
I tried to move the page already, but because the destination page was already edited more than once, the automatic moving process was rejected. After the move I'll make sure all the links are pointing to correct pages and re-edit the first few lines according the new topic.

Cleaning Up
editThis reads like a non-native English speaker wrote it. Could someone clean it up? There are just so many numerous mistakes in grammar it's actually difficult to know what's being said. --Abdul Muhib (talk) 16:53, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- 11 years later, it's still a huge mess and clearly needs someone to work on the article who is both a native English speaker, and knows more about the island than I do (I know what's in this article ;) ). Some of the text you can only guess at the intended meaning. I've given it a once over to make it less appalling, but it's a long way from being of an acceptable standard. I've added some comments in places where the original text was so obscure as to be meaningless in case I got the wrong end of the stick. The article could also do with some radical shortening, as there is an awful lot of content that is irrelevant. I removed some of the most obvious cases (like "the number of students at the school is sometimes more and sometimes less than 40"); there is a great potential for some serious pruning and reducing the article to the relevant information. A lot of it reads like someone's private musings, rather than an encyclopaedia entry.

Taxes and walrus ivory
editThe claim is cute, but the citation is weak. Where is the legal document that validates the claim that a) taxes can be paid with walrus ivory and b) they are the only exception to the IRS rule? I would expect a reference from site:irs.gov or similar. The citation is very weak. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.107.0.73 (talk) 17:29, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Re: Taxes and walrus ivory
editI've heard too that they paid taxes on walrus ivory. I just don't know any references. However, it's not nice to erase someone's work unless you can prove otherwise. Citation that the taxes were NOT paid with walrus ivory was very weak, sorry!
So close to Russia...

A picture
editI see you have a picture from the Bering Straight School District webcams. Well, I have an image from one of these cameras that I think would supplement this article somewhat: http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=diomedeseksmikosna0.jpg
First of all, I need to know if you guys think it'll contribute anything. Second, I'll need advice on how to acquire permission etc... any help appreciated.Eik Corell (talk) 00:13, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
Re: A picture
editEric, I think your picture would be perfect to the Transportation section, since it shows the main transportation channel to and from the island. I like the weather condition on it too...

Village or City?
editAmong the other issues already tagged with this article, it alternates between calling Diomede a village and a city. Presumably it can't both and is more likely a village based on its low population, but as the criteria for "city" varies widely by jurisdiction I don't know enough about Diomede or Alaska's politics to be bold and change all the references to village. 70.73.90.119 (talk) 01:46, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
- List of cities in Alaska describes the criteria; Diomede is a second-class city. No reason it can't be both a village (in common parlance) and a city (in legal parlance). --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 15:10, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
1950s
editThe 1950's section reads strangely, and it's a bit difficult for me to understand it. Somebody that knows more about it should clean it up. Microwavedfork (talk) 22:52, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
Article issues
edit- This is listed as a B-class article supported by 3 projects (notified). The criteria (#1) states:
The article is suitably referenced, with inline citations. It has reliable sources, and any important or controversial material which is likely to be challenged is cited.
It has "citation needed" tags dated June 2015 (several), March 2008, and June 2018. A "clarification needed" tag is dated February 2019. These are issues consistent with "not" satisfying the criteria for the class and if not resolved a class review needs to be performed. - I removed content from the "1880s–1920s" subsection: ..., with "whalebone posts set up and framed at the top to lay their canoes beyond the dogs that would otherwise eat them.". that I could not find supported by the source. -- Otr500 (talk) 12:10, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Otr500:, I wasn't sure if you had this page on your watchlist. I have addressed nearly all, with exception of one, of the "citation needed" tags and the one "clarification needed" tag. I'll continue looking for a source for the one tag left. --ARoseWolf 19:43, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. I ping is still nice. I will defer to you the end result as I am sure it will be what is needed. -- Otr500 (talk) 01:55, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
City???
edit83 people is a city??? 122.104.176.109 (talk) 21:55, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Apparently according to Alaska law, it is. According to common sense, perhaps not. Lighthumormonger (talk) 06:06, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Merge proposal September 2024
editLooking over the revision history and talk page, it appears there's been a number of discussed and undiscussed moves over the years. I've yet to see any discussion which gets to the heart of the matter. We say this article is about Diomede, the incorporated city. According to this, the city limits of Diomede are coterminous with Little Diomede Island. The Diomede article reads as if it's not sure whether it's about the island or the settlement, or whether it's aware that corporate limits span the entire island and not just the settlement. The island article is less ambiguous but there's plenty of overlap. I don't have a preference for a merge target, preferring to leave that up for discussion. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 04:39, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- Taking a look at WP:SIGCOV there appears to be enough sources for both articles to coexist; however the case of WP:OVERLAP is one worth noting. However I don’t have an objection to this merge proposal in particular. 𝚈𝚘𝚟𝚝 (𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚟𝚝) 18:54, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- Or better, the island article should be merged with the city article. At least in the case of Philippine towns, towns take precedence over their coterminous islands (e.g. Sibutu, Concepcion, Romblon, and Culion; note that Philippine towns are called "municipalities"). Little Diomede Island should be merged with the article of the city of Diomede. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 09:31, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
