Needs redirect attention

Someone -- preferably not me, as I have very little time of late -- needs to go through and fix all the redirects from the old DISH Network page:

Post a note here if you make some effort toward completing this little project. Thanks. —chris.lawson (talk) 02:28, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

PBS distant feeds

What if a market lacks a PBS member? How can people in those markets view PBS programming? TitanTV has WNET and PBS-XD in its Dish list, but I don't see them in my EPG, so I'm guessing those are for areas without a PBS member. Could anybody tell me why these are in the list? --/ɛvɪs/ /tɑːk/ /kɑntɹɪbjuʃ(ə)nz/ 22:56, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

German TV

Should the red German TV wikilink really be DW-TV (Deutsche Welle), for which there is an article? --GilliamJF 00:52, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

No. German TV isn't (wasn't) the same thing as Deutsche Welle, although they carried some DW programming. Deutsche Welle is a German government operation, similar to PBS in the U.S., while German TV is a commercial joint venture of ARD, ZDF and Deutsche Welle. Effective 01 January 2006, German TV on DISH Network has been replaced by DW programming. --QuicksilverT @ 23:19, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Chart on subscriber count

Why does the number/year "2000" appear 3 different times (consecutively) with different numbers for each one? --Nguerrero03 08:28, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

The chart has no tie to reality whatsoever. Dish Network didn't even begin broadcasting until March 1996, it reached 1 million subscribers in December 1997, etc. The current chart is pure fantasy.

Major edit summary

I made some major edits this weekend:

1) Moved satellite fleet section to EchoStar Communications Corporation since both listings were different (and wrong) and EchoStar is the entity that operates the fleet.

2) Changed branding to DISH Network. That's how it's spelled, and if you disagree write here.

3) Added lots of verified and corrected tons of technological information and terminology (I own many of them).

4) Moved pictures of dishes around and added SuperDISH 121, and I welcome edits to move the pictures a bit but be CAREFUL they are anchored to each dish type heading.

5) I really think the channel listing should either be removed or put into a tiny table or other page that this page links to.

6) Fixed this broken discussion page.

--KJRehberg 02:13, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Number 2. Is "DISH" an acronym for something? If so, what? If not, then WP:MOS-TM prefers "Dish". If you don't like that fact, then argue it on WP:MOS-TM first. Wikipedia (you, me, us) are not obligated to uphold a marketing style. (I am short on time, so this brevity doesn't imply that I am suggesting an opinion on your other edits.) --Charles Gaudette 00:46, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
I tracked down my own answer. DISH = DIgital Sky Highway (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/aboutus/satellites/echo1/index.shtml). Though I did run into unauthoritative people saying that it was originally Digital Information Sky Highway. --Charles Gaudette 18:29, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Yup, it is an old acronym for "Digital Sky Highway" and I sometimes refer to it as "DiSH" instead of "DISH". Thanks for looking into the fact that DISH is really an acronym and is better capitalized. --KJRehberg 03:54, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

RENAMING IS COMPLETE. —chris.lawson (talk) 02:40, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

Regarding capitalization in the term DISH Network, DISH is an acronym for "Digital Sky Highway" and should remain as DISH, not Dish. --KJRehberg 15:13, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Court TV rift -- on CNN and other channels.

On CNN and other channels there's been an ad citing DISH Network's drop of Court TV. The ad claims if you're a customer and want the channels back "Take A Stand" and call +1-800-710-1922. If you call that number they play yet more propaganda, and then- tell you to press "1" to find out what you can do. Upon doing so, they offer contact information for the competitor DirecTV and "Your local cable provider." Does anyone happen to know who is paying for this ad aimed at thinning DISH Network's subscriber numbers until they bend on the policy? CaribDigita 21:05, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:DISH Network Logo.png

Image:DISH Network Logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:01, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

MPEG4

I've read in some technical forums that DN has yet to broadcast in MPEG4, and instead marks the new HD channels as only compatible with MPEG4 IRDs, while still using MPEG2 for the actual compression, in order to force users to upgrade. Article contains subjective opinions in the section about Puerto Rico pricing

The article contains very subjective opinions in the section where DISH is accused of overcharging residents of PR. To say that someone is overcharging for something is a subjective opinion and inappropriate for an encyclopaedic entry.

I also corrected a number of typos and mispellings that were also introduced by the same author who made the charge of DISH overcharging. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.170.226.56 (talk) 23:00, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Mpeg4 Upgrade

The article has a section about a 'future' upgrade to all mpeg4 programing. I have an old mpeg2 only box, and today I received a letter from dish reading "Due to upgrades in our system's technology and services, it is necessary to upgrade one or more of your older model receivers at no charge to you so you can continue to receive your programming." This would seem to indicate that the mpeg4 upgrade will take place shortly. Sparrowkc (talk) 00:31, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

EDIT: Confirmed with a customer service call, Dish Network is upgrading to Mpeg4, and is sending Dish311 receivers to customers who's current boxes do not support the upgrade. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sparrowkc (talkcontribs) 21:15, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Reformatted sections

I made minor edits to combine the problems and controversy sections to a general criticism and controversy section, as inspired by the earlier comment on this page by Asm2750. I made the date of controversy more prominent so that the reader has a better sense of present relevance. I added a header for each topic so that the reader doesn't have to read the whole text to have a sense of what it discussed. The enclosed content was not otherwise changed. Merging in Dish Network Corporation

I just finished merging in the content of Dish Network Corporation. Having a separate article made sense when Echostar was the parent company, given that it often pursued endeavors that were distinct from Dish Network. For an individual company offering primarily a single service, though, a single article makes the most sense. See, for example, Comcast or think back to Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio before the merger. (Yes, the same should be done with DirecTV and The DirecTV Group.)   user:j    (aka justen)   09:23, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Although it is outdated. It still remains an issue, as Dish Network, still to date will not include any gay programing in their line up. I think it is important to mention this point. EditorU.S.A. TIC 17:53, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

exclusive CMT deal

The paragraph recently added discussing the deal for exclusive content from CMT at best needs a citation, and at worst doesn't add anything useful to the article and should be scrapped. Maybe the right answer is somewhere in between, but personally, I don't see the value in it. Broadcasters make exclusive content deals all the time. Anyone else have an opinion? A Carriage Dispute with NBC Universal over The Weather Channel

i just found out that Dish Network is in a carriage dispute with NBC Universal as the contract to carry The Weather Channel on Dish Channel 214 expire at Midnight on May 20, 2010, because of it, Dish is dropping The Weather Channel and replacing it with a new lower budget produced weather network known as The Weather Cast. Dish claims it's because the customers demanded a 24/7 weather work but The Weather Channel's website confirm it was due to a contract dispute.

here's the two links from both sides of the pending carriage dispute:

Dish Network: http://www.dishnetwork.com/weather/

The Weather Channel: http://www.weather.com/tv/programs/CustomerMessage.html

and the story from the Wall Street Journal: http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100520-715627.html

this needs to be mentioned on Dish Network's Wikipedia page--Boutitbenza 69 9 (talk) 23:25, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Updating HQ location

According to this webpage it isn't Meridian, it's Englewood. Therefore, I'm taking the liberty of changing that entry.

“Englewood” is a postal designation only. The City of Englewood lies over eight miles to the northwest, in another county. As shown in the official U.S. Census Boundary and Annexation Survey found at http://www2.census.gov/geo/www/bas/st08_co/cou/c08035_douglas/BAS10C20803500000_003.pdf, the headquarters is located in Meridian, Colorado. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Watkinsian (talkcontribs) 17:38, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

The HDTV Signal

I removed the section called "The HDTV Signal" because it was totally idiotic (sorry, I was not logged in, so my edit does not bear my name, just an IP).

  • "HDTV stands for high definition television." -- Oh, really? Rather make a link.
  • "The HD signal has a greater resolution than the SD, or standard definition, signal, 1080i compared to 480i, which amounts to six times the resolution." -- Who cares? The article is about Dish, not about HD technology. Also, with HD Lite that Dish practices, horizontal resolution is either 1440 or 1280 pixels, so actuall difference is 4 or 4.5, not 6.
  • "The shape of the HD signal when viewed on an HD television is also much wider than the SD signal, simiar to a movie theater image." -- This was written by a six year old. Keep it simple, stupid: HD has 16:9 frame aspect ratio. Nevertheless, this is not the place to discuss HD peculiarities, there is a separate article on that.
  • "The High Definition transmission also has three components to its signal, not one, like an SD signal." -- This was written by a dropout student. Digital HD and SD use component encoding of color primaries, and no one cares what outputs you have on your Dish box.

The second paragraph is totally irrelevant, and its correctness is questionable. All it all, this was a pitiful chapter. Mikus (talk) 03:17, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

No Local on the 8's, no good

Lots of people here on Wikipedia love Local on the 8's and WeatherSTARs, but I don't use Dish Network because here is my motto: no local, no good!" Dish is a evil satellite company. They lied. They made you pay less for the world's worst satellite company. Do not buy Dish, you may like it at first, but then, you will discover how useless it is. Please do not buy dish. It is a matter of life and death, cause if you don't have midland weather radio, how will you hear about weather in your area!!!?!?!?!?!! Dish, while currently offering "Free HD For Life" as well as "Local Stations" for customers, usually fails to reveal unless asked that local affiliates signals are not in HD, leaving subscribers frustrated as no timetable for ever adding network TV in HD through local affiliates is ever noted. This doesn't sound neutral to me, all my local channels are in HD. DML —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.240.40.154 (talk) 17:59, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Promotional Language and Lack of Citations ... and DisneyCSIfan

I've noticed multiple sections of what seems to be direct lifts from Dish Network marketing materials and have made a few edits to fix same. DisneyCSIfan seems intent on undoing whatever edits I make without addressing the issue. Could I get a reality check before this escalates? - JeffJonez (talk) 02:25, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

I've removed all the DVR additions - those were obscenely promotional, IMHO - this page should not be used as a marketing arm for Dish Network. I would have no problem removing it again, nor should you. MikeWazowski (talk) 03:58, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
DisneyCSIfan seems intent on preserving "their" version of the article. I'll check back in a day or so, and if he/she is still edit warring, I'd recommend asking for help from the higher-ups. - JeffJonez (talk) 21:10, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

DISH reboot in Feb 2012

I understand removing the information about competition with DirecTV, and the AT&T "potential takeover", but I think it's nessasary to explain the reboot (new website, name, and logo) introduced at CES 2012. --DisneyCSIfan (talk) 21:29, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

It may be important, but I don't think it's critical enough to be in the opening section of the article. Did the company radically change their business model or start from scratch? If not, then "reboot" is just hype, and it's a simple rebranding. Do you work for Dish, or know someone who does? - JeffJonez (talk) 05:38, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
I do know someone that does work at Dish. I agree that its just a rebrand, and if not in the opening statement, can we put it somewhere on the page? --DisneyCSIfan (talk) 02:19, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
I'd suggest a new history subsection for the latest branding effort. Also, please consider that you may have a conflict of interest regarding Dish Network. - JeffJonez (talk) 08:54, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
That's why I'd rather have you or another experienced editor add the info. --DisneyCSIfan (talk) 18:49, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Autohop technology and subsequent lawsuit.

A section should probably be started on the Autohop technology, which allows customers to skip commercials and the lawsuit over the technology. More information about the lawsuit can be found at LA Times link68.205.16.177 (talk) 04:25, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Kick-in time for AutoHop

There's a discrepancy between Dish's press release boilerplate on AutoHop and the NYT account. The former says the feature is available at 1AM ET. The latter says two hours after prime time, presumably for all time zones. The latter makes more sense logically, but this might be one of those cases where the primary source is more accurate. I'm not sure. Barte (talk) 00:49, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't think that someone in California would get to skip the commercials when prime time isn't even over. I have a source I'm going to look at tomorrow and see if I come up with anything. And by the way, I'm not sure the article as it currently appears really makes it clear that you have to decide to skip the commercials. I fixed that in another part of the article and addressed someone's concern that there needed to be a section for controversy and a section for the equipment.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:59, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Original research is generally frowned on, but given the discrepancy, it could be useful. Agree that this should be divided into two sections and like where you put it. I moved the specs discussion up as well--the memory capacity and allocation aren't controversial. Barte (talk) 21:13, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Most of that was already there before I arrived. Now comes the confusing part: if you click on the link on the hopper disambiguation page, you'll get the controversy.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 13:00, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Interesting puzzle. I added a "Hopper" subhead under "Services", changed the redirect page to point to it, and added "Autohop" to the disambiguation listing under Hopper. A straight search for "AutoHop redirects to that section, as well.Barte (talk) 13:37, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

This might work. I found an article (using other databases not available to the average editor) on the feature that hasn't been used as a source and an important claim is made: the commercials are there. We haven't done anything with them. Nothing about when it is possible to delete them, though.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:33, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

The AutoHop section currently reads: " When enabled, the feature records but hides commercials, giving viewers the option of viewing prime time programming on the four major networks commercial-free." Does that seem to cover it? I can see why hiding commercials, versus not recording them, could be a legal point. Barte (talk) 18:47, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Well, that does say it.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 20:57, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Fox dispute & Bias

Added Bias tag after reading the section and finding the argument 1 sided in light of the quote made that Fox is "robbing" Dish. Statement should be removed or Fox POV added to give both sides of the issue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gohiking (talkcontribs) 13:04, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

I pared the section back and remove the template. There's a sameness to many of these license disputes: blackout, followed by corporate name calling, followed by resolution with the terms undisclosed. I think we can safely ignore the name calling, which is what I took out here.Barte (talk) 04:12, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

DISH vs. Dish

This was discussed in a couple of threads back in 2006, it seems. The "official name", which I'll change in the Infobox, is "DISH Network Corporation". Signals, bands, polarizations?

I've heard that Dish is Ku-band, but I'm having a hard time sourcing that (haven't dug too hard, admittedly), but frankly I'm a noob to satellite stuff so I'd love if someone better-versed in this could add such info to the page.

In particular, there seems to be all sorts of FSS and DBS stuff which appear to be separate services run by the same company. Maybe? I can't make heads or tails of it. A clear and cogent explanation of where (in the spectrum and in the sky) Dish programming can be found, would be helpful. Myself248 (talk) 18:32, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Channel removals

Removed claims that Music Choice and future programming packages will be added, as Dish Network has made no such announcements.

Also, added Oxygen from channel listing since DISH Network does provide this programming and has replaced Lifetime Movie Network on Jan 16, 2006. It does now on Channel 127. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.197.20.11 (talkcontribs) 03:16, 25 October 2004 (UTC)

Recently, Dish network has had contract problems with certian channels over the years, I think it would be best to add that to the article. Asm2750 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asm2750~enwiki (talkcontribs) 03:59, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

Updates available for infobox

Hello, my name is Caroline. As an employee of DISH, I am here to suggest improvements and updates to this article. I'll avoid editing the article directly and will disclose my conflict of interest openly when submitting requests for editors to review.

For my first request, I wanted to see if editors will consider updating the financials and number of employees in the infobox based on DISH's 2018 Form 10-K report. As currently written, the infobox includes outdated information from the 2017 Form 10-K report. I propose these updates:

  • Revenue: 13.621 billion (2018)[1]
  • Operating income: $2.148 billion (2018)[1]
  • Net income: $1.575 billion (2018)[1]
  • Total assets: $30.587 billion (2018)[1]
  • Total equity: $8.594 billion[1]
  • Number of employees: 16,000 (2018)[1]

Thanks!

Updates available for infobox (revised request)

Hello, here is a revised request to update the infobox. Per feedback to my last request from Spintendo, I included the |page= parameter to show specifically where the financials and number of employees are shown. I'll avoid editing the article directly and will disclose my conflict of interest openly when submitting requests for editors to review.

Incorrect product in infobox

Hello, here is another request to update the infobox. The |Products= parameter contains "Mobile phone", which is incorrect for the reason stated below. I propose these updates to the |Products=:

  • Remove "Mobile phone"
    • Reason: The Sprint and T-Mobile prepay cellular services are not yet part of DISH Network's product line
  • Add: Over-the-top media services
    • Reason: Dish Network is the parent company of Sling TV. The Sling TV Wikipedia article describes the service as "OTT Internet television" in the infobox.

As an employee of DISH, I am here to suggest improvements and updates, and I'll avoid editing the article directly. Thanks!

"Founding and early growth" section

Hello, here is a request to improve the first paragraph of the "Founding and early growth" section, which currently repeats a detail from the "History" section and misspells Jim DeFranco's name.

Extended content

Current:

  2. ^ "Early Growth of Dish Network". Archived from the original on July 14, 2011.

Proposed:

  1. ^ "At a Glance", DISH Network Press Center, DISH Network, archived from the original on July 21, 2011
  2. ^ "Early Growth of Dish Network". Archived from the original on July 14, 2011.

Differences:

  • Removed "a precursor to DISH Network" as this is explained in the first paragraph of the "History" section.
  • Corrects the spelling of Jim DeFranco.
  • Breaks up one sentence into two ("The company began...")
  • Adds "(FCC)" as an abbreviation for Federal Communications Commission, since the abbreviation is used later in the article.

My primary goal is to correct "Defranco" to "DeFranco" and remove the redundant detail, and I understand editors will decide to accept or reject these changes. Also, here is another source confirming Candy Ergen and Jim DeFranco as co-founders of EchoStar.

Dish México

Hello, Dish México was added back to the |Subsidiaries= parameter in the infobox. This is incorrect. Dish México is not a subsidiary of DISH. Rather, it's a joint venture with Echostar. DISH Network Corporation has nothing to do with Dish Mexico. While Echostar and DISH Network share a chairman in Charlie Ergen, they are not one in the same. Can editors remove Dish México from the infobox?

As an employee of DISH, I am here to suggest improvements and updates to this article. I'll avoid editing the article directly and will disclose my conflict of interest openly when submitting requests for editors to review.

Not done Kindly provide references for this claim.[a]  Spintendo  17:13, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Notes

  1. ^ Please note that the multichannel.com source previously provided is insufficient in negating this claim.
User:Spintendo, this source says "Satellite TV provider Dish Mexico is a joint-venture between Mexico’s MVS Comunicaciones and EchoStar Corp. of the U.S., with around 2.5 million subscribers." Thanks! CK-DISH (talk) 20:07, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Needless to say, EchoStar is what Dish Network used to be called. Please provide evidence that they have sold their stake in Dish Mexico.  Spintendo  07:48, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
User:Spintendo, page F-63 of EchoStar Corporation's annual report says "Dish Mexico: We own 49.0% of Dish Mexico, an entity that provides direct-to-home satellite services in Mexico. We provide certain satellite services to Dish Mexico." (The other stake in Dish Mexico is owned by MVS Comunicaciones.) EchoStar Corporation and Dish Network Corporation are separate companies. Does EchoStar Corporation's annual report count as a valid source to show that it is in fact EchoStar that owns the 49% stake in Dish Mexico? Thanks! CK-DISH (talk) 21:06, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
Removing the item would contravene that which is stated in the Dish Mexico Wikipedia article. The reference that I'm looking for is your statement that EchoStar and Dish Network Corporation are two different companies, and if they are, then which of the companies EchoStar did Dish Network originate from:
  1. the one that owns 49% of Dish Mexico
  2. the one that is claimed as the company which became Dish Network in the Dish Network article
  3. Or some other third EchoStar we've not yet heard about.
Please advise.  Spintendo  06:22, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

User:Spintendo: Please allow me to clarify. In 2007, there was a split in EchoStar Communications Corporation. EchoStar Communications Corp. became DISH Network, which houses the pay-tv business to this day. Meanwhile, EchoStar Holding Corp was spun off from the original EchoStar Corporation. Now, when we say "EchoStar," we are referring to the EchoStar Holding Corp. Since the spin-off from EchoStar Communications Corp into EchoStar Holding Corp and DISH Network took place, EchoStar and DISH have been two separate companies. The post-split EchoStar has the investment in Dish México; DISH Network holds zero Dish México assets. This is shown on page F-63 of EchoStar Corporation's annual report. The annual report clearly shows that EchoStar is a separate company, has a different board of directors, and is traded under a different name (SAT) than DISH Network (DISH). The only thing these two companies share is a chairman in Charlie Ergen. Evidence to support this can not only be seen in each company's respective 10-K, but also in the following source from The Wall Street Journal. As for the Dish México Wikipedia article, the information on that page is inaccurate and should not be considered a viable source. It was my impression that Wikipedia articles are not used as sources for other Wikipedia articles. Can you reconsider removing Dish México from the |Subsidiaries= parameter in the infobox. Thanks! CK-DISH (talk) 00:12, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
"The only thing these two companies share is a chairman in Charlie Ergen." It's not entirely clear from the source you've provided that the companies really are that separate. They may trade differently stockwise, but their joint venture leaves a lot left to share — satellite access, investment monies, and even a chairman. In any event, the issue as an edit request is moot. When I first deleted this entry, it was immediately replaced back in the article. Thus, the change is by definition controversial, meaning the use of the {{request edit}} template is not recommended without first having a wider discussion beyond what you and I can offer.[1] Others need to step in. @Usedtobecool: Thank you for correcting the article. I will keep an eye on the page to see if the error is added back. In the meantime, I've submitted another request below to combine two very short sections, if you're willing to take a look. Thanks again! CK-DISH (talk) 19:34, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

Hearst Television

Hello again! I'd like editors to take a closer look at the Hearst Television section. At minimum, I would suggest removing , at midnight, ET and , at 7:00 p.m. ET as unnecessary details. I could see the dates being important, but not the exact times. However, I should note, the entire section is unsourced and there's a section specifically about Hearst Television over at the Criticism of Dish Network article. Are editors open to moving this content on the Dish Network page over to the Criticism of Dish Network page, or at least whichever details they feel are worth keeping? I should note, there is already text about the March and April 2017 actions on the criticism page, so this text is kind of redundant. As a reminder, I am submitting this request on behalf of my employer DISH. Thanks for any feedback or changes on my behalf. CK-DISH (talk) 17:51, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

   Please use WP:MERGEREQ

  • Thanks for reviewing. I'll take a look at how the selective merge request works because there is a lot of duplicated content between this article and the Criticism of Dish Network article. In the meantime, User:Sceptre, you were kind enough to help with an edit request above, and I wonder if you'd be willing to help here as well. I'm also still looking for an editor to simply fix the spelling error noted above. Thanks. CK-DISH (talk) 15:43, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Tailgater and Wally

Hello again! I've been suggesting some article improvements on behalf of DISH. I propose combining the Tailgater and Wally subsections and using the header "Tailgater and Wally". Currently, the Tailgater section mentions Wally, and the Wally section has just one unsourced sentence. There is no need for a separate subsection about Wally. If editors agree, can someone update the page for me? Thanks! CK-DISH (talk) 19:34, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

Please contact the editor who created the separate Wally section — in this case CaribDigita — to inquire from them whether or not this change can be made. Regards,  Spintendo  08:28, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
@CaribDigita: Hello! I'm Caroline, and I am here to suggest improvements and updates to this article on behalf of DISH. User:Spintendo prefers I ask you about combining the Tailgater and Wally subsections for the reason mentioned above. Are you willing to update the article on my behalf? Thanks! CK-DISH (talk) 22:48, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
I just now saw this. For clarity, correctly if I'm wrong? I try to create an article that leaves someone able to look at something with no previous knowledge and learn from there. I question if you feel your proposal promotes clarity in article. I mean isn't the Tailgater an antenna device used for watching Dish programming on the road while the "Wally" is the name for your receiver-box that sits inside the house??? How is combining those sections going to promote clarity? CaribDigita (talk) 23:15, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
@CaribDigita: Thanks for your feedback. I just noticed the "Tailgater" section mentions Wally, and then there was a one-sentence section about Wally right below. I was just suggesting a way to reduce redundancy – especially given that the Tailgater and Wally are most often used together -- and make the article a bit easier to read. If this gives a bit more clarity, an updated "Tailgater and Wally" section might actually read like the following:
"Tailgater is a portable satellite antenna that can be used on-the-go and can be purchased as a standalone device for $350. The Tailgater is supported by a Wally receiver, which is a solo-receiver without a built-in DVR. Customers only pay for the period of time when the receiver is active on the account. Monthly cost for or a Wally or older receiver is $7 per month. If the receiver is the only one on the account, there is no charge.[1] The Tailgater weighs ten pounds, is protected from weather and automatically searches for a signal. The only satellites that are currently compatible with the Tailgater are at DISH's 119 (SD/HD TV), 110 (SD/HD TV) and 129 (SD/HD TV) orbital slots.[2]"

This brings the text up to date, combines two very short sections, and even fixes a few grammatical errors. Would you consider this an improvement? Speaking of errors, I'm hoping to avoid editing the Wikipedia page myself, so would you be open to fixing the spelling correction I've noted below? Thanks! CK-DISH (talk) 20:38, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
I actually shouldn't edit it any longer as I've since become a Dish shareholder *following* when that edit was made. CaribDigita (talk) 20:48, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Typo

Hello again! Currently, the "Voom" section has a typo, in the fourth paragraph (starting with "According to Sanford C. Bernstein"). Can someone please change "cases involving spoilation" to "cases involving spoliation". You'll see "spoliation" used twice later in the section. I realize this is an easy fix but I'm not editing the page myself because I work for DISH. Thanks for making this change on my behalf. CK-DISH (talk) 22:48, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

2019 financial information

Hello, I'd like to submit a request to update the infobox with 2019 financial information, per the company's Form 10-K.

Per feedback to my last request from Spintendo, I included the |page= parameter to show specifically where the financials and number of employees are shown.

As an employee of DISH, I am here to suggest improvements and updates to this article. I'll avoid editing the article directly and will disclose my conflict of interest openly when submitting requests for editors to review. • Net income: $1.4 billion (2019)[1]

  • Total equity: $11.564 billion[1]
  • Number of employees: 16,000 (2019)[1]

Redundant "Criticisms and controversies" content

Hello again! I've been looking at this article and related articles, and realized a significant portion of the "Criticism and controversies" content is redundant to text at Criticism of Dish Network. For example, you'll see repeated info at Dish_Network#AutoHop and Criticism_of_Dish_Network#AutoHop, Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Criticism_of_Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations, etc.

Previously, I've been asked to reach out to the editor who added content to discuss possible changes, but in this case I cannot do so. I dug around in the article history and discovered that much of the existing content was added by User:Lesbianadvocate, an editor who "has been blocked indefinitely because CheckUser evidence confirms that the operator has abusively used multiple accounts", between December 2015 and March 2016.

I realize this is a big ask, especially coming from an editor with a conflict of interest, but might someone be willing to help trim down some of this redundant information? I'd be happy to identify some additional specific instances of redundancy. Thanks in advance for any help or feedback. CK-DISH (talk) 19:59, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

This does appear to be a legitimate WP:UNDUE concern here. Per WP:SUMMARY we should not have all this detail included in the main article. I don't see a problem with trimming the section down. I don't have time to do so at the moment though. ~Kvng (talk) 16:32, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
@CK-DISH: I agree with Kvng, but your request would likely be actioned faster if you have a draft of the proposed improvement. Generally speaking, this page should contain a WP:SUMMARY of the most significant controversies as listed at Criticism of Dish Network, so there is supposed to be some redundancy. As you mention, performing a rewrite is a major request for volunteer time. If you have a draft it would lower the amount of uncompensated work editors would need to do, improving the chances that someone will act on it. Wug·a·po·des 22:23, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
@Kvng and Wugapodes: Thanks for your feedback. I will be happy to begin drafting a proposed improvement to make it easier for the volunteer community, as suggested. As I work on that, I will post another request below concerning DISH's mobile business in the wake of the T-Mobile/Sprint merger ruling, if either of you have an opportunity to look at that. CK-DISH (talk) 16:08, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
I think it may be especially difficult for a COI editor to write something negative about their organization. The place to start here is improving the lead at Criticism of Dish Network. ~Kvng (talk) 00:39, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Telemarketing violations and fees

@Kvng and Wugapodes: Hello again to you both. I'm open to working on the Criticisms article's introduction, but I also understand Kvng's comment about having a company representative drafting new text. I was hoping an editor would be willing to take on trimming redundancies, but since this is such a big ask, perhaps I can identify specific problems for easier review? I'd like to start with Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Dish_Network#Hidden_fees.

These two sections are redundant to Criticism_of_Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Criticism_of_Dish_Network#Fee_disclosures. The telemarketing violations sections are the exact same, except the DISH company article has the additional sentence, "In 2017 DISH Network was fined $280 million by the FTC for Do Not Call Registry violations." If editors believe this sentence should be kept, can this be moved over to the Criticisms page, and the rest of the section here can be removed? Similarly, the fees sections are almost identical, except the company article has the additional sentence, "As of June 6, 2017, the shipping cost is now $12."

To clarify, I propose removing the Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Dish_Network#Hidden_fees sections of this article because they are nearly identical to the content at the Criticism page, and I will let editors decide if the Do Not Call Registry sentence is worth keeping/moving.

I hope this is a reasonable first request for trimming duplicate content. Thanks. CK-DISH (talk) 20:59, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi Caroline, I saw your ping at WikiProject Merge. I don't mind a bit of pruning. Maybe more like slashing—there's massive duplication of content that shouldn't be on the main page per WP:SUMMARY, not to mention WP:UNDUE since the criticism is about half of the content here! Let me see what I can do. Thanks for doing everything above board here! --BDD (talk) 00:25, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Done My first edit mostly just removed a lot of content that was already in the criticism article. In a second edit, I merged some of the rest of it over. I think what's left is an appropriate summary. The criticism article could still use some logical ordering—I mostly just put new sections at the end when the issues didn't correspond to an existing section. --BDD (talk) 00:51, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
@BDD: Thank you for helping with this request. I was expecting to have to submit requests for each sub-section, so I'm happy to see you were willing to take on trimming the section as a whole! If you're willing to help with other requests, I'm still looking for an editor to review the Wireless request below, and I'll be posting another request to remove inappropriate use of the word "ethnic" momentarily. Thanks again for your assistance. CK-DISH (talk) 16:08, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Number of employees

Thanks again for your help, Spintendo. On page 31 of the same document, I see the text "We had approximately 16,000 employees at December 31, 2019, most of whom were located in the United States." Are you able to update the source and change (2018) to (2019) in the infobox's employee field?

Also, in the Dish_Network#Broadcast_technology section, the last paragraph seems unnecessary and the text is unsourced. Do you mind removing, "Both a standard receiver and a DVR (digital video recorder) are available to subscribers for an upgrade fee. Beginning in January 2010, DISH Network charges $7.00 as a DVR service fee, which covers cost of licensing EPG (electronic program guide) listings from Rovi Corporation, with the TV Guide logo displayed on listings screens to signify the partnership."? Inappropriate use of "ethnic programming"

I would like to submit another request on behalf of DISH. Currently the article uses the phrase "ethnic programming" twice. Programming is international, not ethnic. Would an editor mind changing both uses from "ethnic programming" to "international programming"? Thank you. CK-DISH (talk) 16:10, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

New "Wireless" subsection

Hello, here is a request to add a subsection to "Services and devices" about DISH's wireless business. As a result of the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, which was approved by a federal judge on February 11, 2020, DISH will become the 4th major wireless carrier in the U.S. My proposed addition cites The New York Times and Fierce Wireless.

Extended content

Proposed:
Wireless
In 2019, DISH entered an agreement as part of the Sprint/T-Mobile merger where DISH would acquire Sprint’s prepaid wireless businesses, including Boost Mobile.[1] On February 11, 2020, a federal judge ruled in favor of the merger between Sprint and T-Mobile. As part of this agreement, DISH is set to become the United States' 4th major wireless carrier and begin serving Boost customers in the prepaid wireless market before building a virtualized, standalone 5G network.[2]

Done - Wireless service is major enough to merit a new subcategory. I replaced the second source with a better one and changed some wording, but the meaning is essentially the same as what you proposed. — Tartan357 (Talk) 07:20, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

OnTech

Hi again! Currently the infobox mentions OnTech Smart Services, but the main article text does not. I've proposed a very basic and neutral description per CNET, if editors find this addition helpful:

  • Dish launched the direct-to-consumer smart home technology brand OnTech Smart Services in 2019; initially available in 11 metropolitan areas, the brand offers smart home devices and installation services.[1]

Request

Hello again! I'd like to propose another addition to this article. Currently, the page describes controversies and criticisms, but does not acknowledge any of the company's corporate citizenship initiatives. DISH has partnered with multiple organizations, completed numerous community projects, and assisted with disaster relief efforts. I've drafted a brief and neutral overview of this work based on journalistic coverage for consideration:

Where do you see these edits going? A new section? I think most like fine, although I'm unsure about "DISH Cares was launched in 2014 and focuses on community engagement, sustainability, and providing services following disasters." I'd remove that line and post, but not sure where it should go. --FeldBum (talk) 17:28, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

@FeldBum: Thanks for reviewing. My goal for the sentence you've mentioned was to note the year of establishment and primary focuses, but I understand you and other editors will determine the most appropriate text. I'm open to your preferred placement and section heading. Comcast has "Philanthropy", Apple Inc. has "Charitable causes", and there's a Wikipedia page called Corporate social responsibility. I'd be fine with any of these or simply "DISH Cares" if that's preferred. Thanks again! CK-DISH (talk) 22:14, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
@CK-DISH: I have   Partly done this request by summarizing the sources and information you provided in the article. This gives it equivalent coverage to what you saw at Comcast. I also agree that the controversy section was not quite in-line with our content policies and so I revised that section and merged it into history. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 16:37, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Content removal request

Thank you for helping above, User:Spintendo.

I'd like to submit another request on behalf of DISH. Currently the "higher capacity satellite dishes" section has some unsourced and unnecessarily detailed information about web support forums and supposed customer comments. I propose removing the following text, which is the second half of the first paragraph:

  • "The DISH 1000.2 is 23 in (580 mm) in diameter. Even with the larger size, there are still many reports of customers consistently losing signal on the 129°W orbital location. This has forced some customers to either use a 2nd separate DISH Network brand dish, or an aftermarket 30" dish, aimed specifically at the 129°W orbital location. On several satellite related web support forums, customers have critically suggested that the new DISH 1000.2 wasn't nearly large enough and should have been 20–30% larger to properly deal with rain fade. Later DISH Network took the approach of splitting the US into two regions. Subscribers west of Chicago use DISH 1000.2 antennas aimed at the 110°W, 119°W, and 129°W orbital locations (referred to as the western arc). Subscribers east of Chicago use DISH 1000.4 antennas aimed at the 61.5°W, 72°W and 77°W orbital locations (referred to as the eastern arc)."

Thank you. CK-DISH (talk) 23:39, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

If the reason to delete is that the information is unsourced, there are several other sections which would fall under that same rubric but which would be retained according to this request. In order to be fair to the rest of the article, those sections should also be proposed to be removed,[a] or at least another reason than "unreferenced" should be found for its removal. Please clarify.  Spintendo  06:53, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Notes

  1. ^ In other words, what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Otherwise, an argument could be made that to arbitrarily apply a precept with one section (especially one containing criticism, such as this one does) but not to others would constitute biased editing. I understand that this might have been a process in which one section at a time was being proposed (as an earlier section was last week). If that's the case, then it would be better to propose them all to be removed at once, rather than one at a time, so other editors might see this as an unbiased, blanket removal of unsourced info rather than something more selective or possibly biased. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thank you!

Thank you for replying, User:Spintendo. In addition to being unsourced, I was seeking to remove the aforementioned content as unnecessary detail (support forums, customer comments, etc). I was planning to submit additional edit requests to remove other chunks of unsourced content. I was trying to keep the requests smaller and easier for editors to review, but I am fine with you and other editors removing unsourced text throughout the article in an attempt to improve the page overall. Are you willing to help remove the unsourced text? Thank you. CK-DISH (talk) 16:11, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Additional content removal request

Thank you for helping above, User:Spintendo. Currently the "founding and early growth" section has some unsourced and unnecessarily detailed information. I propose removing the following text:

  • "In 1998 EchoStar purchased the broadcasting assets of a satellite broadcasting joint venture of News Corporation and MCI Worldcom, called ASkyB (for American Sky Broadcasting, named after News Corp's BSkyB service in Britain); the two companies had nearly merged (which called for DISH Network being renamed Sky) before it was called off due to Charlie Ergen's clashes with News Corp. executives. With this purchase EchoStar obtained 28 of the 32 transponder licenses in the 110° West orbital slot, more than doubling existing continental United States broadcasting capacity at a value of $682.5 million; some of the other assets were picked up by rival PrimeStar, which was sold to DirecTV in 1999. The acquisition (which also included an uplink center in Gilbert, Arizona) inspired the company to introduce a multi satellite system called DISH 500, theoretically capable of receiving more than 500 channels on one DISH. In the same year, EchoStar, partnering with Bell Canada, launched DISH Network Canada."

Additional removal request

Currently the "Broadcast technology" section has some unsourced and unnecessarily detailed information. I propose removing the following text:

  • "While for years DISH Network has used standard MPEG-2 for broadcasting, the addition of bandwidth-intensive HDTV in a limited-bandwidth world has called for a change to an H.264/MPEG-4 AVC system. Dish Network announced as of February 1, 2006, that all new HDTV channels would be available in H.264 format only, while maintaining the current lineup as MPEG-2. DISH Network intends to eventually convert the entire platform to H.264 in order to provide more channels to subscribers. In 2007, DISH Network reduced the resolution of 1080-line channels from 1920x1080 to 1440x1080. Reducing horizontal resolution and/or data rate of HD video is known as HD Lite and is practiced by other TV providers as well."

Thank you. CK-DISH (talk) 16:59, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Not done - I agree that this information needs to be cited, but it seems to provide an appropriate and useful amount of technological history. I instead tagged it as requiring a citation, which should lead to a reference being added soon. — Tartan357 (Talk) 06:59, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Unsourced content removal request

Currently the "Technical information" section has some unsourced and unnecessarily detailed information. I propose removing the following text:

  • "High-definition television (HDTV)": "In January 1999, the company released the industry's first high-definition television (HDTV) tuner. In August 2003, the company launched EchoStar IX, the first satellite equipped with commercial Ka band payload for broadband service over the United States. This led the company in 2004 to be the first satellite TV service to offer local channels to all 50 states. In that year, the company also introduced the nation's first interactive TV multiple picture-in picture application for the Olympic Games, offering coverage from multiple channels at once. This year the company also acquired its ten millionth customer."
  • "High-definition television (HDTV)": "In January 2005, EchoStar bought the broadcasting assets of the troubled HDTV satellite provider Voom, including its Rainbow 1 satellite co-located with EchoStar 3 at 61.5° West. On April 29, EchoStar announced that it would expand its HDTV programming by adding the first 10 of 21 original Voom channels and mirror the channels on a CONUS slot. DISH Network added CNN HD in Spanish along with other packages in its Latino HD lineup."
  • "Satellite antennas": "DISH Network offers different types of satellite receiving equipment for obtaining signals from its diverse satellite fleet. Most of their consumer boxes are manufactured by Sanmina-SCI Corporation to DISH specifications. Prior to the December 2001 merger of SCI Systems and Sanmina, DISH Network receivers were produced at factories in Huntsville, Alabama and Fountain, Colorado. Currently,[when?] receiver assembly takes place in Guadalajara, Mexico and India."

Again, I propose removing this text because WP:UNSOURCED says "All content must be verifiable. The burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and it is satisfied by providing an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports the contribution."

Thank you. CK-DISH (talk) 17:56, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Unorganized

Much of the data is not organized very well. For instance, I see where the article talks about hoppers and Joey’s, then says that HBO is not available (Which as of last month, it’s been back) and then jumps back to Sling…. It just is odd to me Gumby-andrit (talk) 02:49, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Incorrect subsidiaries

Hello, here is another request to update the infobox. The |Subsidiaries= parameter contains several inaccuracies. I propose these updates to the |Subsidiaries=:

  • Remove Dish México
    • Reason: Dish México is not a subsidiary of DISH. Rather, it's a joint venture with Echostar. DISH Network Corporation has nothing to do with Dish Mexico. Here's an article from 2018 that explains in more detail: [2]. While Echostar and DISH Network share a chairman in Charlie Ergen, they are not one in the same.
  • Remove: Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and Open Mobile
    • Reason: The T-Mobile/Sprint merger is not complete, so the divestiture of Boost to DISH is not yet finalized; therefore, Boost, Virgin Mobile and Open Mobile are not currently part of DISH.

As an employee of DISH, I am here to suggest improvements and updates to this article. I'll avoid editing the article directly and will disclose my conflict of interest openly when submitting requests for editors to review.

Thanks!

Hi Spintendo. Thanks for resolving this and my previous request! CK-DISH (talk) 17:12, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi,

I would like to add an external link to this Wiki article. Similar to an existing external link at the bottom of the article (to access a Dish Network channel lineup via tvchannellists.com), the proposed one leads to a more up-to-date/complete version of the guide that is printer-friendly and color coded by TV station genre. This guide is free for users to download from the website. The intent is to help folks see a more organized national Dish channel lineup in hardcopy.

Proposed Link to add: Print-Friendly DISH Network Channel Guide

Sincerely,

--GebienD (talk) 03:59, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for following up, @GebienD, and for your patience. I've posted a note about your note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television#External link question. Let's give them a few days to think about it. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:53, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
Personally, since the channel list requires a form of "registration" in order to receive it (a user has to provide a physical address and email address to receive it, similar to an online ordering system), I would discourage its inclusion per WP:ELREG. RunningTiger123 (talk) 18:35, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
Follow-up note: I wouldn't be opposed to adding the link if it was openly available without registration. (In other words, I have no issue with apparent COI here, given the discussion that happened here and at WP:ELN.) RunningTiger123 (talk) 18:37, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing that out, @RunningTiger123. I hadn't tried to go through the "checkout" process. @GebienD, I remember you saying that this was difficult to set up. Is this a problem you could solve? WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:53, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for your comments. Yes, I can make the channel lineup information readily available and without the need for the user to register ("checkout"). I plan to share this new info here shortly. Much appreciated. GebienD (talk) 21:51, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Addendum re: Revised External Link — After countless hours spent over the past week shaping this DISH Network channel list into a high quality, accurate (triple cross-referenced) and up-to-date informational source, I'm proud to finally share it in HTML format (without the need for website visitors to register). Please note it is a channel list per se as opposed to a full guide (with corresponding channel numbers). I'm hoping the list is sufficient. Thank you in advance! GebienD (talk) 07:31, 20 November 2021 (UTC)

I understand if you just feel like giving up at this point, but there's another link in the article that has the channel list plus the channel numbers. I think the real value for your site was being able to print it. Now I'm not sure what would be best for readers. (It probably doesn't help that I haven't had a television for more than 30 years, so I'm not sure what normal television looks like these days.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:51, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

I follow your logic and have now added the channel numbers in an alphabetically arranged list. It's print friendly and can easily be copied/pasted. Please see the new link and advise? User:WhatamIdoing —— GebienD (talk) 03:36, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

WhatamIdoing pointed out that there's another external link with the same information (and that can be sorted alphabetically within each section), but this link might be better than a wiki. I would lean towards including this link, but I'm curious what WhatamIdoing has to say. RunningTiger123 (talk) 03:49, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
Yes, the advantage of my list is it's printer-friendly whereas the other one is not. Also, I will make my list sortable but having technical difficulties with the HTML version at the moment (this will be fixed shortly). Either way, I'm still hoping for the "okay" at this point. I have put a lot of work into this and hope for a positive outcome. Respectfully, GebienD (talk) 15:53, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

DISH and crypto refs

Hello @PeakWildFlower:, I took out the ref you added. This is because it is to a press release from DISH and so is a primary source. The references need to be to sources such as newspapers, magazines, academic proceedings where the information has been checked. The Bitcoin Cash development is reported in the ZDNet article at the end of the paragraph. GreyStar456 (talk) 23:17, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
