Ed Dundon
editEd Dundon was deaf. He played in the AA. The AA was a major league. Therefore, Dummy Hoy wasn't the first deaf major leaguer. Varitek 05:14, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
Baseball Library
edit- BaseballLibrary - profile and career highlights
The content available on that page can easily be incorporated into the article and cited as such. Thus, there is no reason for the link in the EL section. //Tecmobowl 08:37, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
- Some of the year-by-year highlights relate to Hoy on an indirect basis, and while I'm not sure they deserve to be included in the article, I think they're useful enough to warrant the link; perhaps more important, the prominent link on that page to a list of books and articles about Hoy would be VERY useful to readers. I noticed that you've deleted the BL links in some other places as well; keep in mind that everything at an external link could, in theory, be incorporated into an article and sourced. (Why, for instance, include Hall of Fame page links when that material is most likely in the article?) rather than simply link to material not already covered. MisfitToys 19:46, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
- In point 12 of WP:EL#Links normally to be avoided, you can see that indirectly related information is not considered appropriate. If you feel like the list of books is useful (as I do as well), perhaps redirecting the link would be best. What are your thoughts? I consider this the type of conversation that is applicable on the other articles we have mutually edited. //Tecmobowl 20:35, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
- Forgot to add, when I say redirecting the link, I mean to say that this information is actually available at sabr and that would be a less objectional source for the information. I do think that link would be invaluable to the articles here. //Tecmobowl 20:39, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
- Each page is directly related to the player, but some of the items in the highlights involve numerous individuals, among whom the player in question might be secondary. The guideline is directed at entire pages which are not specifically about the article subject, not every item included there. Unlike Baseball-Reference links, I don't include the BL links for every player that has a page there - only those with a substantial biography (at least a page), numerous career events and/or a bibliographic page. MisfitToys 21:03, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
- If other players are mentioned in that link and thus, in this article, that does not create a problem. Maybe I am missing something, but wouldn't this information be well utilized as cited examples in this article? Again, this could extend to another article where an editor sees the information on bl and wants to include it somehow. //Tecmobowl 03:00, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Deleted comments
editRegarding the deleted comments (see here) by an anon user: The article doesn't suggest that Hoy did not use sign language in his personal, private life, only that there is a lack of evidence that he introduced hand signals to game play. We're not talking anout sign language here, but rather game signals. MisfitToys 22:18, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
But Hoy himself, corroborated by the coaches involved, claimed that he had the third base coach signal balls and strikes to him using hand gestures. To say that 'no articles appeared during his lifetime' is clearly overstating the case. Certainly the fact the Hoy retired several years before the first record of umpire hand signals in 1905, and the fact that no mention was made by Hoy and others of Hoy's role until nearly 30 years later make the claim suspect. But there was certainly numerous contention on this point within his lifetime. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.218.155.162 (talk) 21:18, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- Well, even that (if accurate) would probably be regarded as being standard signalling from coaches rather than formally accepted game signals - specifically, those used by umpires (see his SABR bio for more on the lack of published reports on this topic during his life; anyway, Hoy almost certainly outlived all of his coaches). Same pic on two profiles
editThe picture on this profile is also on the profile of Dummy Taylor. The fellow in the pic is wearing a New York uniform, and since Hoy never played for any New York team, I'm guessing that it's really Taylor, so I'm removing the picture. Correct me if I'm wrong.
