I know the Dusicyon australis, its Latin name means "foolish dog of the south". Australis means "south". So what does Dusicyon mean? Foolish dog? Scottishwildcat12 (talk) 15:33, 9 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Something like "foolish dog". Scientific names can be derived from Greek as well as Latin. "Cyon" is Greek for dog. The best definition I've found for dus- is "prefix conveying the idea of difficulty, opposition, injuriousness, similar to our "mis-" or "un-" prefixes". So "foolish dog", "useless dog", "stubborn dog" or "bad dog" might be some possible ways to translate the genus name. By the way, thank you for the articles you've created on Dusicyon species.
