Tuba quartet

In 1960 Elisabeth Lutyens revived the use of a Wagner tuba quartet in her Quincunx.

What does this mean? When did the Wagner tuba quartet start to fall in to disuse? When was it ever in use? And how did she manage to fit all those Wagner tubas into her Quincunx? I need answers! --Rschmertz 01:15, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The article states that Lutyens continued her musical education from 1926 to 1930 at the Royal College of Music in London as a pupil of Harold Darke and Ernest Tomlinson.

The name Ernest Tomlinson inappropriately links to another Wikipedia article, about the Ernest Tomlinson I knew personally, who was born in 1926. It seems unlikely that Lutyens received tuition from him when she was 20 and he was only 2 years old. In any case, he was never associated with the RCM.

According to the 1980 New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Lutyens studied composition with Darke (presumably Harold) and studied viola with somebody called Tomlinson. Presumably the viola tutor was the Ernest Tomlinson referred to in the Wikipedia article on Jean Stewart (violist). The latter page fortunately does not contain an irrelevant link to the composer, Ernest Tomlinson.
