Why did MacArthur dump her?

It's not clear from this article why MacArthur dumped her when it seemed the relationship would become public, or why he chose not to marry her. OBJECTION! The article claims she committed suicide in 1960, but she's Categorized as a 1962 death. This is an obvious contradiction!
