Promise
editTo carry on, I believe this is an underrated movie and it had a profound affect on me as a child. At least, the first 2/3 did. The last third of the movie I'd rather forger, as I'm sure Dante would too. I'm absolutely certain this was rushed to cinemas to meet a marketing deadline. The tonal shift in the film is far too stark to be a serious effort in filmmaking. Someone decided to shortcut Dante. Whether this will ever be proved or not, I don't know, but I'm absolutely certain that this film did not end as was originally envisioned. Had this film been allowed more time and money to chart its own course, we could have a rival for Flight of the Navigator, The Last Starfighter or even E.T. here, but as it turned out, the film fell flat in its final act. A shame for a film with so many great young actors and so much promise throughout the bulk of the script. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.1.180.71 (talk) 04:03, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Inconsistency
editThis movie couldn't have blended elements from The Goonies, since the two movies were released within a week of each other. PHRiSCo 17:47, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
I believe there is also an error in the plot summary; I haven't seen this movie in some time, yet I'm fairly certain that the breathing apparatus that is described here as being connected to the oxygen-generator was actually from the prior test flight; they had the masks connected to an oxygen tank because the sphere was airtight. I clearly recall the helicopter pilot (whom they did not encounter the second time out) catching a glimpse of Wolfgang's masked face and mistaking him for an alien. The masks were no longer needed once they got the circuit board completed and it started making its own oxygen. Can anyone with a copy of the film confirm this? Cory 19:47, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- Confirmed. I saw Explorers on Film4 last night and it played out exactly as you've described. Analog Kid (talk) 14:09, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Contact did not come out until 1997. I do not see how it could have blended elements from a different movie that came out 12 years after it did. (for that matter, when in '85 did the goonies come out?) guerilla_gorilla(pour) 3:15, 17 April 2006
- That sounds about right (my favourite movie). I dont know if it was an oxygen regeneration system that was placed in after using the masked as I cannot remember this being said in the film. But I do remember seeing a unit with fumes (looking like air) rising from the back of the boys in the ship. I just thought this just eaiser then having the masks with the tank still supplying the air. Sorry for spelling. MattyC3350 (talk) 11:14, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
Also, didn't wack sing a Huey Lewis song in the original?. . i think it was "The heart of Rock N Roll". I remember during the song he plays his wierd saxiphone. They show the sax now but after he signs the song. Can anyone clearify. . or am i just crazy (which could be). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.41.237.130 (talk) 23:56, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Trivia Section
editI removed the sentence about a book being seen on one of the boys desk along with the report that a hand can be seen beind the Thunderoad model when circled by the helicopter. The book because this can be seen by people watching the movie without having to point it out, and the hand behind the ship, I cant find any ref for this plus me and some mates have watched this film more then a few times and cannot see/remember this happening. Please make sure to read Wiki's Guidelines to Trivia sections before adding anymore. MattyC3350 (talk) 11:11, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
Having never seen the Maltese Falcon, I don't know if the context of "the stuff that dreams are made of" in Explorers is particularly suggestive of Maltese Falcon, but this phrase originated with Shakespeare, not Maltese Falcon.192.104.39.2 (talk) 16:36, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
I'm surprised there is no mention of the fact the boys attend the Charles M. Jones high school 86.173.98.24 (talk) 17:06, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Creation
editI apologise for being very vague, but I remember reading that the film was rushed to cinemas, and that the final sequences were greatly shortened from the original script; and the IMDB's trivia section states that the film was taken from Joe Dante and released "as-is" before it had been fully completed. How was the film originally supposed to end? Does the novelisation (which would presumably be based on the original script) differ significantly from the film? -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 14:44, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
