All articles in Wikipedia need inline citations to verify information in article per WP:V. See WP:CITE for help on how to do it. Good luck! GBYork 12:47, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Assessment (WPCANADA)

edit

I have assessed this as Start Class, because it contains more detail and organization than would be expected from a Stub Class (although it needs proper referencing), and of low importance, as I do not feel many people outside of the film world would be familiar with the festival. Cheers, CP 16:03, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would mildly disagree with this assessment. It is the largest film festival in terms of attendance in Montreal, and has media coverage because of that. 70.55.87.54 (talk) 03:46, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Contested deletion

edit

This page should not be speedy deleted because...

Hi there - I did not create this page for the Fantasia Film Festival, however I do work for the festival and noticed many incorrect facts, spelling mistakes and clunky grammar. It was my hope to add detail. I understand when I first posted that the content was not objective enough, so I removed the material i thought was too biased so that all that remained were the facts about the premieres and guests. I do not see how this is a violation of anything , as it is all verifiable. As an international festival it is very important that there is not a Wikipedia entry with incorrect information. Whoever had written the page had listed wrong years for certain films, venue errors, and many other things that were misleading, I was only trying to rectify that and supply as much detail as possible for reference. Please tell me how I can improve the page - I have read through your rules and did not think I was violating anything.

If someone can please remove the visible warning from the page I will refrain from adding any further information until more thoroughly going through the rules or speaking to another editor for advice. Our festival starts in less than a month and so it's a very bad time to be having a warning on our wikipedia page. I hope this can be addressed right away - thank you!

Perhaps the article need not be speedied, but it does require cleanup. However, yours is a bit of a conflict of interest, and your edits added substantial tracts of text copied from your website, which, copyright issues aside, accounted for the promotional tone. 99.168.84.75 (talk) 15:41, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I know it's a conflict of interest but I'm not sure how to make sure correct info is getting onto the page when other people are entering it. Also ironically the festival overview text on our spectacular optical website was written for the partial purposes of posting to wikipedia because we noticed how incomplete or incorrect much of the information was on wikipedia. I also don't understand the copyright issue so i'll have to read more about that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kier-la (talkcontribs) 15:49, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can whoever created the speedy deletion warning that is showing up at the top of the page please remove it right away? All the content I added has been removed by someone anyway, so the questionable content is not even there and yet the warning still is. Kier-la (talk) 15:59, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

The best and only option is to remove whatever content can not be supported by objective sources, and add content than can be, per WP:RELIABLE. An article can not rely on primary sources, nor blogs or press releases. It must then be written in a neutral tone. The decision to remove the speedy deletion template can be made by an administrator. 99.168.84.75 (talk) 16:02, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi - everything I wrote has already been deleted by someone, the only text that remains is what was there originally that I was trying to correct. I'm also new here so I appreciate your patience - how can I contact an administrator to request the removal of the warning template? Kier-la (talk) 16:11, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

The article contains plagiarized content that is almost word-for-word from this source. I've added the {{copyvio}} template. Erik (talk | contribs) 16:20, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's the content that has been on this page for years, that I was trying to correct. I don't know who would have created the page or added that text. But it appears that my attempt to edit it has opened a whole different can of worms that I would like to get fixed as soon as possible in order to revert the page to a functional state. Kier-la (talk) 16:29, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I came across the copyright violation when I was trying to find secondary sources about the film festival. Not sure what the next step is, but it may be best to delete the page since about all revisions have plagiarized content. It seems better to start from scratch with a stubby article using secondary sources. The festival's notability needs to be demonstrated through such sources. Erik (talk | contribs) 16:32, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

OK - sorry to be a pain- but a)is it possible that previously existing text was actually on Wikipedia first and then lifted for that travel book you cited as the source? (as much as I'm not a fan of that text, I like it more than a big copyright infringement notice on our Festival's wikipedia page!) and b) As someone who works for the festival, can I create or edit a page for it, as long as I firmly cite outside media sources for the facts I present regarding guests, premieres etc? Or is that still considered a conflict of interest? I appreciate any help in getting this resolved asap - thanks! Kier-la (talk) 16:45, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

A: Yes. Compare these: This is the first revision of the page, and this. B: No. It is advised you don't edit the page yourself when in such circumstance and instead go to the talk page and ask someone to edit for you. Island Monkey talk the talk 16:55, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Kier-la has a good point. The second revision in the page history is from August 2005, and the book I linked appears to be published later. Even so, the original information is not verifiable. Kier-la, do you have access to any Canadian newspaper databases? I'm not finding a lot of mentions of the festival in Google News Search. We need to base coverage in the Wikipedia article on what secondary sources have reported. Information from a primary source should be a small portion of that coverage. Erik (talk | contribs) 17:10, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Erik - I know there are more than 60 pages of references to the festival when you do a google search (although not sure how detailed in information these sources are), and I can check with the communications staff to see what press they have archived. Thank you for your help with this! Kier-la (talk) 17:21, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm looking for references that cover the festival in depth. For example, this is a possible one, but I'm not sure if it meets WP:RS criteria. This is one of the subscription-only articles I am talking about, but I cannot tell how much they actually discuss Fantasia. My experience is that Canadian newspapers have pretty tough paywalls, which is why I was asking if you knew of any references. Remember that this article needs to be distinct from the official site in being based on coverage from secondary sources. It shouldn't repeat very much of the official site itself, which is there for readers' access. Erik (talk | contribs) 17:48, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have a few festival diaries from international publications I can send you (some are print only so I will have to scan). Between these and more recent web sources it should at least be apparent when the festival started, who started it, who the programmers are, what audience numbers are like, and what films screened/what guests appeared in person in which years. Although the press will not list every film or guest, many of the names previously listed will be verifiable. So is there somewhere I can email scanned documents as well as links to web press? Thank you! Kier-la (talk) 21:01, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fantasia FestivalFantasia International Film Festival – This is the title above the infobox as well as the bolded text in the first sentence. It would also disambiguate the subject as a film festival, not any other kind of festival. Eventhorizon51 (talk) 00:21, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Fant-Asia 1998

'Fantasia's Toronto edition premiered at the Bloor Cinema.'

There was no actual 'Toronto edition' of Fantasiafest, the reason why it was partially in Toronto was because they didn't have enough space that year in Montreal, so they had to split the festival in two, and Toronto happened to be the ideal location for it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.244.29.66 (talk) 03:18, 14 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
