Moving from "Fiery Cross Reef" to "Fiery Cross Island"?

edit

Now Fiery Cross "Reef" is a de facto artificial island, with an area of over 200 hectares. (See satellite imagery acquired on Jan 7, 2015 and Jan 28, 2015. ) Is there any reason that this article should not be renamed? Zanetu (talk) 11:37, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Is there any reason not to - Yes. Its name is Fiery Cross Reef. (Swallow Reef is still Swallow Reef.)
If you can provide a reference from a reliable source saying that it has officially been renamed, then fill your boots. But until then, the place's name is still "Fiery Cross Reef". Pdfpdf (talk) 16:16, 9 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
What do you mean by "officially"? Something from United Nations? A statement from the Chinese government? A statement from the U.S. government? Swallow Reef is another article I would cast doubt over. Just wondering if Wikipedia has any guidelines regarding reef/island renaming. Zanetu (talk) 01:38, 10 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we call it whatever reliable sources generally call it. I have only ever seen "reef". — Rwxrwxrwx (talk) 14:46, 30 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

By-the-way

Nice satellite imagery. You don't happen to have any "before" photos, do you? Pdfpdf (talk) 16:44, 9 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have some. But I guess they are unrelated to the matter we are discussing. Zanetu (talk) 01:38, 10 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Here are some before photos: https://i.imgur.com/H1A4gF2.jpg And yes, there is now a 10,000 foot airstrip on the reef: http://www.reuters.com/news/picture/us-chinese-navy-chiefs-to-discuss-south?articleId=USKCN0SM2ER20151029&slideId=1090468770 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.112.217.179 (talk) 05:08, 29 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Those "before" photos are a different island/reef. They seem to be of Cuarteron Reef. Rwxrwxrwx (talk) 12:47, 29 October 2015 (UT

Yongshu what?

edit

Fiery Cross Reef, also known as ... "Yongshu Reef" (永暑礁) and "Yongshu Island" (永暑岛) by the Chinese ...

I doubt that it's known as either of "Yongshu Reef" or "Yongshu Island" by the Chinese. Maybe "Yongshu Dao", or some other name, but ... Pdfpdf (talk) 16:40, 9 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Umm, I think it can be rephrased as "Yongshu Reef" (永暑礁) and (since 2014) "Yongshu Island" (永暑岛) by the Chinese, as the Chinese government started land reclamation in the latter half of 2014. Zanetu (talk) 01:38, 10 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ownership

edit

There should be a section on legal claims. The PRC may control the reefs, but is not the legal ownerRoyalcourtier (talk) 06:52, 18 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Again, on the subject of the name

edit

I can't seem to edit the other topic relating to this, sorry. Anyways why not use its Chinese name, Phillipine name, or Vietnamese name? Socialistboyy (talk) 00:27, 29 March 2017 (UTC)socialistboyyReply

This is the English Wikipedia. We generally use the common English names for topics. See, for example, Tokyo, Soviet Union, Germany, etc. - SummerPhDv2.0 02:17, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Reclaimed

edit

"Reclaimed" is not an acceptable word here. It has to "exist" to be "reclaimed". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.127.17.241 (talk) 09:33, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Not so. The word means to create land by taking it from the sea. sirlanz 11:44, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
