Injury at EURO2008
editIt has been reported on German TV that the injury is not achilles tendon related, but rather a broken bone in the lower leg (Crus). Where is the achilles tendon thing taken from? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.54.213.239 (talk) 20:54, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Galatasaray controversy
editRiber was not on loan to Galatasaray, as this article states. He was under contract with them, and suddenly packed his bags for Marseille in June 2005 without informing the Galatasaray management. He then claimed Gala had not paid his wages for 3 months, therefore his contract was void. Galatasaray strongly denied this claim -- they accused him of simply leaving for a better deal, breaking his contract, and accused OM of poaching their player. The matter was sent to FIFA for arbitration, and I'm not sure of the outcome (as of June '06). I think this issue deserves some mention here. 74.64.37.91 12:42, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

facial injury
editribery seems to have some sort of facial injury can someone add it to the article? thanx 202.37.167.1 15:29, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- I read that he went through a windscreen in a car accident when he was younger. I can't find a reputable source to verify it so I won't add anything in the article just yet. Diddy Didds 23:15, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
You are right, he went through a windscreen at the age of 2 years-old in a car accident.
- His facial scars are the result of a car accident as a child. Galatasaray fans nicknamed him "Scarface". 74.64.37.91 12:01, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
NPOV Dispute
editFar too many complimentary adjectives and hyperbolic phrases to conform to the Wiki standard.
Also, Ribery has been involved in many controversies with management of previous clubs, which needs to be mentioned as well to provide a more balanced view of the player.
- Agreed - his controversial departure from Galatasaray, for example
Is his wife Algerian or Moroccan??
editNot that I think that it is important, but the article states that she is Algerian whilst the reference states that she is Moroccan. Which is it? There is an obvious discrepancy here that should be sorted out. --Bob 01:52, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
As french fan, i have to say thatt his wife is Algerian, no doubt about that. They have a baby now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.131.224.225 (talk • contribs)
- Well, until a reference points to that, it has to stay Moroccan. --Bob 17:33, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- These two references state that his wife, Wahiba, is of Moroccan origin:
- I have seen none from reoutable sources that portray her as Algerien, only blog sites state that. --Bob 23:06, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- If she is Moroccan, why did he travel to Algeria this week to meet her family??? Why does the article say she's from Nedroma in Algeria? Why did he go to Oran? Why are there pictures of him with her family in Algeria? Why does his father-in-law and his wife's family where Algeria jerseys and scarves when watching Ribery games ..... Here are articles of his trip to Algeria:

- The reference stated says that she's of Algerian descent, not Algerian. She's French. And i don't know why it matters where she's from if the article is about Franck. It would be safer to just not mention where she's from. rone (talk) 19:52, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

National team goals
editIf he just scored his first international against Spain on june 27th, why does it state that he has 3 goals in 6 games for France? Should it not be 1 goal in six games? Xioyux 03:59, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Name
editWhy is his name listed as "Frank Ribery", with a redirect from Franck (which is, per Google, the more common spelling)? Normally a redirect should be a link FROM a common misspelling TO the correct one, not the other way around. If someone can give me a logical (i.e., Wikipedia-supported) reason for keeping it as is, great; if not, I'll change the redirects in 48 hours. Samer 02:48, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- I've just had a look round on various sites, and there seems to be a bit of disagreement as to how Ribery's name is spelt. The official FIFA site has him as Frank; The Guardian (UK Newspaper) has him as Franck, as does the French Football Federation. The BBC seems to have him as Franck, but then at least one article refers to him as Frank.
- My instinct would be to move the page to Franck Ribery, but I think a bit of research needs to be done. Anyone know how to get hold of French birth certificates?! -Jim on Wheels! 18:26, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- Page moved and spelling updated. His name is spelt with a c. --Bob 19:10, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
Honours
editShould a goal against Spain really considered an honour? Because there has been hundreds of people who have scored in the World cup round of 16 and Spain. I'll remove it for now.
Verifiable?
editAs of today (May 27, 2007) the Wikipedia entry shows Franck Ribery as a Bayern Munich player. This is based on speculation and not fact. It has been reported in the European sports press, who are not held to any journalistic standards. This is the quote all the papers and this listing refers to:
"French midfielder Franck Ribery will join Bayern Munich this summer, a source close to the club revealed on Friday . . ."
Two key points here: 1) This unattributed quote says he 'will' sign, not that he 'has' signed- an enourmous difference 2) 'A source close to the club' is meaningless if he is unnamed and not speaking officially on behalf of the club
This fact could be confirmed by the time I post this, but the point is Wikipedia entries should only state verifiable fact and not media speculation.

Conversion
editAccording to WP:BLP: Category tags regarding religious beliefs and sexual preference should not be used unless two criteria are met:
- The subject publicly self-identifies with the belief or preference in question;
- The subject's beliefs or sexual preferences are relevant to the subject's notable activities or public life, according to reliable published sources.
Criteria 1 is met by the fact that he told the age "Islam is my source of strength either in or outside the playground,". Criteria 2 is met by the age and an article in a Lebanese Newspaper talking about French conversions to Islam. It is quite relevant.Pectoretalk 18:53, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

GA Review
edit- This review is transcluded from Talk:Franck Ribéry/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
I'll get on this soon. Reviewer: Lampman (talk) 07:02, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
A really exciting player, I was happy to do this review. The article needs some work before it can pass as a GA.
- The lead is too short, his career should be summarised in more detail. An article this size needs at least two paragraphs, see Wikipedia:Lead_section#Length.
- Is it really necessary to give the names of his daughters? They have no independent notability, and WP:BLP should be given extra weight when dealing with minors. I think it's enough to say that he has two daughters.
- "Early career" and "Move to Marseille and CAS ruling" have only one ref each. This is not enough when dealing with the biography of a living person, even if the information is not particularly controversial. The first paragraph needs some sourcing, the information on his nickname in Turkey and particularly the controversy with Galatasaray needs to be sourced better.
- The article is full of peacock terms, expressions that give the impression of original research, and just plain unencyclopaedic language. I'll list the worst cases, and you should be able to find them and replace or remove them: giants, admirably, methodical, shocking, legend, hammering, unbelievable, destruction, nice, easily, great service. Likewise: "important World Cup playoff", that is redundant, those are inherently important.
- Images: "speaking" seems like a bit of a euphemism; I don't think it's reading too much into the picture to say "arguing". "with Bayern Munich" this picture clearly seems to be taken during practice, which should be mentioned. Finally, not a big deal, but the last image confuses me. The photo information says it's the Colombia match and gives the date as April 2008, though that game was actually in June?
I will give the article a week for these things to be fixed. The sourcing is the main obstacle: the other things should be easily fixed. Lampman (talk) 08:50, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
- I see some work has been done. Let me know when you feel you're done, and I'll give it another look. Lampman (talk) 05:06, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
- You can check it out now anytime. Joao10Siamun (talk) 08:40, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- Great, I'll promote it. Good job! Lampman (talk) 14:24, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
"pace, energy, skill and precise passing." - source?
editI notice that the source provided for the quote in the lead does not support it. It's also the player's club, which probably isn't the best for such an assertion. Where is the quote from? Similarly for the second paragraph: The previous talisman of Les Bleus, Zinedine Zidane, has called Ribéry the "jewel of French football" is cited to the Bayern profile; am I missing something obvious? – Toon 15:57, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
- It seems that the Bayern Munich website removed the biography section in player's profiles. This is what the profile read:
- "Zinedine Zidane says he is "a jewel of French football," while top striker Thierry Henry describes him as "a nightmare for any defender": the best players on the globe are unstinting in their praise for Franck Ribéry's qualities, although the fleet-footed player’s route from Boulogne in northern France to Bavaria has been anything but smooth. After highs and lows at a succession of clubs, he finally drew admiring glances in 2004-5 with FC Metz and Galatasaray Istanbul, before emerging as the hottest property in French football over the next two seasons at Olympique Marseille. His pace, energy, skill and precise passing turned him into one of the stars of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, prompting Bayern to acquire his services from 1 July 2007 for a Bundesliga record fee."
- Its all around the Internet, but not in specific articles where I can reference it. Also, I reference the "jewel of French football" comment.Joao10Siamun (talk) 18:24, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
- Very well. I'm happy to treat it as an offline source and AGF, in that case. If you're hoping to get it to FA, though, you'll likely need to change it or cite it. The Zidane quote looks fine. Well done on the article, it's good to see the articles of excellent players getting attention. – Toon 18:43, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

editPer the discussion at WT:FOOTY, it appears that there is strong support for removal of this category from the biography. I attempted to do so and was reverted by an anon user. Franck Bilal Yusuf Mohammed Ribéry
editBut its not this name... In deed, Franck Bilal Yusuf Mohammed Ribéry, its a muslmim name, not a civil name !!! You can read in this ID Franck Ribery, not Franck Bilal Yusuf Mohammed Ribéry. Your name its not your nickname no ?! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eljulii (talk • contribs) 09:30, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

So his name is actually Bilal..?
edithttp://www.webislam.com/noticias/53753-frank_bilal_ribery_se_muestra_orgulloso_de_sus_creencias.html
It seems that he has officially/legally changed his name to Bilal Yusuf Mohammed. Obviously we wouldn't start using that as his name WP:COMMON, but I think we should do what happened with Cat Stevens. Thoughts? Leaf Green Warrior (talk) 11:07, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
- He hasn't officially/legally changed his name. He simply adopted the name as his Islamic name, similarly to Éric Abidal, who also adopted Bilal as his Islamic name. It is also mentioned in the Personal life section that he converted to Islam and, subsequently, adopted Bilal Yusuf Mohammed as his Islamic name, so no need to put it in the lede because Franck Ribéry is known as Franck Ribéry professionally (by his club, footballing organization, etc.,) and in the media. — JSRant Away 18:44, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
- Again. Please stop adding it as an "also known as" name in the lede. It's enough to have it listed in the personal life section. It's not like having a stage name.--Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:29, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- I should elaborate on my reasoning. It's a different matter for these Islamic news/fan sites, whose job it is to promote the religion, to state that this is the Islamic name that he's adopted, and for more recognized sources to regularly refer to him as such. The current list of mentions are not enough for inclusion in the lede. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:48, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/why-france-cant-face-its-new-national-hero-1988021.html there is a reference to his new name (Bilal Yusuf Mohammed) in the independent (reputable UK newspaper). I will be seeking further action if this is not added back in. Leaf Green Warrior (talk) 16:40, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- In reference to the above comment: if Eric Abidal has adopted an Islamic name, why isn't it mentioned in his article? – PeeJay 17:43, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- Please do seek further action. I would love input from the wider community as to this situation. As it stands we have a few passing references to his Islamic name when his faith is mentioned, but not in reference to is on-field actions. If he were an imam, it would make perfect sense to list it. If that was the subject's primary purpose in life, it would be listed. However WP:COMMONNAME would argue against its use in the lede since and certainly if you were intending on moving it to the adopted (not legally applied) name. If he were to have discarded his secular name, then I would certainly agree with inclusion until such time as the media referred to him exclusively by the name. For instance, the article you povided isn't sub-titled "Bilal Yusuf Mohammed is the focus of his country's World Cup hopes" but rather "Franck Ribéry is the focus of his country's World Cup hopes." And the article itself refers to him as "Franck Bilal Yusuf Mohammed Ribéry", which in itself can be proven completely wrong. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 18:53, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- It shouldn't be mentioned in the lede - WP:UNDUE - but certainly in a 'Personal life' section. GiantSnowman 19:39, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- Leaf Green Warrior also used Nicolas Anelka as an example of why this should be used. That was added here. Removing based on this discussion. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:19, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- It shouldn't be mentioned in the lede - WP:UNDUE - but certainly in a 'Personal life' section. GiantSnowman 19:39, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Franck Ribéry full name
editHello. I'd agree that a plain web page is preferable to a PDF, assuming that both pages do the job equally well. The PDF has a list of players with their full names. However, the FIFA stats pages don't list players with their full names: see e.g. David Beckham, whose full name is David Robert Joseph Beckham, or Sidney Govou, whose full name is Sidney Rodrigue Noukpo Govou. So I'll restore the PDF ref. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:28, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
- Not quite the same situation here, but fine. Walter Görlitz (talk) 13:30, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
Footballer of the Year in Germany
editTo explain it clearly: The award Footballer of the Year (German: Fußballer des Jahres) in Germany is determined by a poll of German football journalists from the Association of German Sports Journalists (Verband der Deutschen Sportjournalisten) and the publication kicker. The result is usually published in August. Ribéry has won this award in 2008, but not (yet) in 2013, because there was no poll yet.
As this source clearly states, he has already won a poll where his fellow professionals (i.e. Bundesliga players) voted. Please don't confuse the two polls. --Jaellee (talk) 16:21, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

editI'd say the France one is in far higher quality and there's no sun glare on the picture either which you get on the 2013 Bayern one. And hey, it's only a year, he hasn't changed that much! The Madras (talk) 21:47, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

editApparently, "there was no consensus to change when you last tried in August 2013". I don't recall that I tried anything in August 2013 and apparently since the image has been there for more than six months, there was some sort of consensus. What image should be used, this scowling image, this one that has sun in Ribéry's face or a different image? Walter Görlitz (talk) 22:31, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Recent bunch of edits
editHi, I have problems with User:Rms125a@hotmail.com's edits. The editor
- removed a lot of spaces in the source code for no reason at all (and added some typos in the process) [2]
- put errors in the titles of references [3] (non-French media often omit the accent Ribéry's name - but that's no reason to modify the titles of the references) and added completely useless brackets to a ref [4]
- removed dead links [5], [6] which should not be done.
I feel the benefits of his/her edits (fixing style and grammar) are much smaller than the things which have to be cleaned-up afterwards and as it is a lot of work to go through all his/her changes, I'm tempted to revert them completely. This is a Good Article and should be kept this way. Any suggestions how to proceed? --Jaellee (talk) 19:33, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
- Me too. Some of the edits are OK though, but discussion is probably the place to start. I'm somewhat OK with the CN tags, but adding them with spaces and without using the correct form is not appropriate for an advanced editor. Some of the tagged content is common knowledge and can be verified by clicking on the linked articles, but I was recently reminded that it's not acceptable to assume that linked articles suffice.
- The spacing around citations is a separate issue. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:07, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
- Yes I have my own edit tweaks and styling that are hard to change after all these years. Suffice to say, @Jaellee, I reverted the edits by another editor back to your last stable version and have decided not to edit this article anymore because, while I thought and think my edits are constructive, unfortunately issues have arisen and it is better that I withdraw from editing and have removed it from my watchlist.
- To explain the substantive complaints above, please bear in mind that:
- a) I only deleted one dead link, intending to replace it with a valid one, but I didn't get the chance with the endless reverts and re-editing and edit conflict messages. Mea culpa.
- b) "I feel the benefits of his/her edits (fixing style and grammar) are much smaller than the things which have to be cleaned-up afterwards" -- addressed above already.
- c) "removed a lot of spaces in the source code for no reason at all (and added some typos in the process)" -- again, harmless MOS styling that I prefer, and was unaware of resultant typos but everyone makes typos, and, as above, I am withdrawing from editing this page, so as to save everybody from these issues.
- d) "non-French media often omit the accent Ribéry's name - but that's no reason to modify the titles of the references" -- I was unawares but now I know. Thanks for the 411.

- When I wanted to use the tool to report URLs which were erroneously considered dead by the bot, I get the following message after login:
- An error occured connecting to your account:
- Error retrieving token: Sorry, something went wrong connecting this application. Go back and try to connect your account again, or contact the application author. OAuth token not found, E004
- --Jaellee (talk) 13:16, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- As I wrote above, the bot reported two links as dead which were in fact working. I reverted the bot's edits in the article and wanted to report this error with the tool mentioned above. I still have the error message when I try to use the tool. So can you help me with that? --Jaellee (talk) 15:07, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Jaellee: Did you try to login again? It should give you a link to click which will re-attempt login. The tool logins correctly for me. If it's persistently not working, it could be a token issue with your Wikipedia account. Let me know if it's still not working, and try logging out and back in from Wikipedia too. If it's still not working, that's a bug that needs to be reported to the MediaWiki developers.—CYBERPOWER (Happy 2017) 01:57, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
