On need for expansion

Article name
editObservation: Though it is perhaps true that this province is the only entity in the world that has the official name "Free State", I don't think it can be said that the SA province is particularly more well-known worldwide than many other "Free State" entities historically (Irish Free State, Congo Free State, Free State of Saxony, etc.). As such it is probably more appropriate that the Free State be a disamiguation page and the SA province article be named something like Free State, South Africa.

- I am ambivalent about such a move, but if you are going to propose a move it should be to Free State (South African province), for consistency with North West (South African province). - htonl (talk) 12:37, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Requested move

Page moved. Note that this was where it started in 2006. Vegaswikian (talk) 04:58, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Free State → Free State (South African province) – because per Free state (disambiguation), the term "Free State" is highly ambiguous. As well as the generic concept of Free state (government), "Free State" is part of the name of 14 former states. Several of those, such as the Irish Free State, were abbreviated in local common usage simply as the "Free State". The suggested disambiguator is as used for North West (South African province).
If this article is moved, then Free State should be redirected to the disambiguation page at Free state. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:21, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- Support; I don't think the capital 'S' is sufficient disambiguation in this case. Powers T 21:04, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- Why not? It certainly distinguishes it from the philosophical concept. There's no time a grammatically correct sentence would use that meaning in a manner that would send a link here or use this province in such a way to send a link there.
- The only problem is the other Free States. They do deserve a disambig, but an appropriate one of their own here, separate from the philosophical concept. — LlywelynII 15:20, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose. If you google free state, it's mostly this topic. Well, there is also Maryland. But I don't think anyone is likely to move Maryland to Free State. A three word disambiguator? I suggest Free State Province, which is used officially. Kauffner (talk) 22:06, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- Comment: there is precedent for "(South African province)" as a disambiguator; see North West (South African province). Notwithstanding the official use linked, it's my experience that "Free State Province" is not a construction actually used in South African English. Look, for example, at the articles in the Free State category on IOL; they invariably refer to "the Free State". - htonl (talk) 22:35, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- Use in American or British English could carry that point, but well taken that "Province" remains rather vague. At the same time, it is needlessly long. — LlywelynII 15:22, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- "Free State (South Africa)", as you have suggested below, would certainly work for me. - htonl (talk) 16:08, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

- Support matches other SA province, and multiple "Free State"s. 65.92.181.184 (talk) 03:36, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- Soft Oppose - Free State should be a disambig, but a separate one only for the capitalized former states, which should be moved here from their inappropriate lower-case use; needlessly long disambiguators are loathsome: Free State (South Africa) or Free State, South Africa, works just fine, regardless of prior editors' mistakes. Otherwise, you just end up with redirects at those page names anyway and those names are the ones actually employed in actual links. — LlywelynII 15:15, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- Rename per nom, and redirect Free State to Free state. I would generally oppose Free State (South Africa) or Free State, South Africa, as these names are slightly more ambiguous and could possibly be confused with Orange Free State, which was located in territory that is presently in South Africa. Free State (South African province) is quite clear. Good Ol’factory (talk) 07:43, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Move
editMove to Free State because (province) is just a redundant title. 2A02:C7D:3FB0:300:C4E8:3E1:EC75:F51 (talk) 17:46, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
