Hints of Rumors ??
editThe sentence beginning "Hints of rumors ...." is a tease. I would be obliged if the original writer would be more clear. Also, I don't quite follow the logic of the last part of the sentence, which makes this even more baffling. My kingdom for a clue. Thanks.
Wikification of animal and bird names
editHaving landed here upon wishing to harmonize Steller's sea cow to use sentence case, i.e. no capitalization of the animal name unless the first word starts a sentence or is a proprer noun (as is the case here), I decided to wikify this article accordingly also.
- For birds, capitalization is required, see WP:BIRD, so we should have Steller's Jay.
- But for all other animals, as far as I can make out, the consensus is to use sentence case, see WP:Fauna name, so we should have Steller's sea lion, for example.
As it may seem a bit inconsistent to capitalize birds but not other animals, I prefer to explain on the talk page which parts of WP:Policy apply, having spent a good half hour searching for them. CaptainScreebo Parley! 14:22, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Manuscript Addition
editI have found a book that is called "Journal of a Voyage with Bering, 1741-1742". It is a published book that has Georg Steller's Manuscripts. I am planning on adding some information mentioning these manuscripts. Or adding information from the manuscripts to this page. Sitekm2972 (talk) 05:08, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
Steller's name to be removed from any birds
editHeard this story today about a movement to remove the names of historical figures from all bird names. https://www.npr.org/2023/11/01/1209660753/these-american-birds-and-dozens-more-will-be-renamed-to-remove-human-monikers
Wondering what awful thing this Steller guy did. Not sure if this belongs in the article, but on the other hand, there appear to be at least three bird names containing his name, so maybe a mention? H-2-O (talk) 17:19, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
No known portrait exists, yet...
editAs far as I can tell, the portrait used originates from the Russian article where it is attributed to "V.V. Sanakoev, 1996. Oil on canvas" 2603:3023:4E5:C100:AA1C:A9C8:E8FB:C346 (talk) 18:05, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
