Hunter S. Thompson?

Was Gonzo named after Dr. Gonzo/gonzo journalism? Kuralyov 01:36, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)

• It seems very likely, (although I think Thompson himself did borrow the term) but I yet have to see a quote from Henson (or some original creator of the show), for certainty. Btw, I heard that it was originally an Italian word.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 1970 seems to be the birth of both incarnations of Gonzo. HST's "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" was described as "pure Gonzo journalism" round about the same time Snarl The Cigar Box Grackle was making his debut. Phallic Hook-Like Nose?

There appears to be debate here about whether Gonzo's nose is "phallic" or "hook-like". Someone just changed it back to "phallic" when it was apparently changed from "phallic" to "literally hook-like" back on Aug 3 of this year. So perhaps the current revision will be rolled back to "hook like" if the consensus is to avoid the word "phallic" here.

I don't see anything wrong with "phallic", but we should remove the word "literally". Regardless of any possible muppet penis debate, whether his nose is genuinely hook-like or phallic (both similes), the word "literally" is extraneous and misleading.

Prior to Aug 3, it said, "long, phallic nose," which is correct.

If we're going for brilliant prose, isn't 'phallic' a little distracting? I've worked on several freudian articles, and don't really have any qualms about the term, but this just seems out of place, even if his nose does look like one. Wrad 05:05, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Where does the name originally come from?

I wonder because there IS a real word which could at least be an idea for why Gonzo's name is Gonzo. In French argot, there IS a (now dated) word gonze which means "chap" or "mate" (for the BE readers: "bloke"). Could it come from there? -andy 92.230.7.31 (talk) 17:31, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Gonzo is also an English word (meaning strange or outlandish), so i expect an American created character just used the English word, no?. Some dictionaries the words origin is unknown, but this http://www.thefreedictionary.com/gonzo says maybe from the latin or indo languages words for simpleton.Yobmod (talk) 17:35, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm Going to Go Back There Someday

Would it be kosher to mention that the song Gonzo sings in The Muppet Movie seems to directly imply that he's an alien? It might be speculation, but I'm sure someone from a real source has written about it... Kniobo (talk) 05:01, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

That Gonzo was an alien was not decided until Muppets From Space was written, so any apparent implication is coincidental. Powers ^T 01:24, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
