Location of the inscriptions
editStrangely, the Cunningham quote given in the article about the location of the inscriptions of the Gopika cave is quite far from the real text and seems to have been fabricated. Here is the original text: Four Reports Made During the Years, 1862-63-64-65 p.48-49. In the original, Cunningham explains clearly that the Anantavarman inscription is inside the corridor (although I think he inverted the east and west jambs), and he properly positions the Dasaratha inscription on top of the entrance (which this article currently claims as the location of Anantavarman's inscription, even using a drawing). I'll wait for the main editor to make the corrections herself before jumping in. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 22:03, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
- @पाटलिपुत्र: Fabricated what and by whom? The quote is from page 48, and it describes the cave's location. The article makes no mention of jamb. It states, "Above the entrance is the Gopika Cave Inscription." I do not understand your concerns. Please restate, perhaps quoting the exact sentence or para of this article you are referring to. - @Ms Sarah Welch: Here is a copy of pages 48 and 49 from "Four Reports Made During the Years, 1862-63-64-65 p.48-49" which you claim as your source. I have checked four different versions on Archive.org, but they are all similar in content. They all show a text which is factually different from the one in the article: I have highlighted in blue what is is properly reported in the article, and in red what is not. In particular, this sentence from the article is in total contradiction with Cunningham (and is factually wrong): "It has one entrance. Above the entrance is the Gopika Cave Inscription. Outside the Gopika Cave is another inscription from Ashoka's century, which credits the cave's excavation to the grandson of Ashoka and dates the cave to the 3rd-century BCE." Please also note that photographic evidence (Commons:Category:Gopika Cave) is in conformity with what Cuningham explains in his report (except for his east-west mixup): the Dasaratha inscription is on top of the entrance, the Anantavarman inscription (what you call the "Gopika cave inscription") is in the corridor, on the left wall as one enters. -
Entrance corridor of the Gopika cave, with the Gopika Cave Inscription of Anantavarman on the right.
-
Text of the Anantavarman inscription (extraction from the previous photograph).
-
Dasaratha inscription over the entrance.
-
Text of the Dasaratha inscription.
- Ok. I understand your concern now. How about we replace it with, "Above the entrance of the Gopika Cave is an inscription in Pali" and add the sentence "The Gopika Cave Inscription is in the entrance corridor."? Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 09:04, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
- I'll copy-edit a bit more as it is still incorrect. I will change the caption of the drawing, as it shows the location of the Dasaratha inscription, not the Anantavarman one. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 10:38, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
- The drawing also has a mistaken file name: "File:Gopika_Cave_plan_and_Sanskrit_inscription_location,_Nagarjuni_Barabar_Caves,_Bihar.jpg", since the inscription being highlighted is the Dasaratha inscription and therefore is in Pali, not Sanskrit. The file summary also is wrong. Could you make the renaming on Commons as they will more readily accept an uploader's own request? I suggest the name should be changed to "File:Gopika_Cave_plan_and_Pali_inscription_location,_Nagarjuni_Barabar_Caves,_Bihar.jpg", or, better still "File:Gopika_Cave_plan_and_Dasaratha_inscription_location,_Nagarjuni_Barabar_Caves,_Bihar.jpg".पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 11:16, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Ms Sarah Welch: Follow-up: I would like to rename the file as we had discussed (it is not Sanskrit, but Pali). Can you either do the renaming yourself on Commons, or, if not, confirm your agreement hereunder so that I can apply for the renaming? पाटलिपुत्र Pat (talk) 11:17, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

Gopika cave inscription of Dasaratha Maurya
- @Ms Sarah Welch: My only point is that the inscription on top of the door at Gopika Cave is an inscription by Dasaratha Maurya (3rd century BCE) (not by Anantavarman), and was written in Pali, hence the need to rename this file by correcting "Sanskrit" to "Pali" at least, and if possible correct the description on Commons (you originally described it as the Sanskrit inscription of Anantavarman). I just need your OK so that I can proceed with the renaming of the file on Commons, since you originally uploaded the file. पाटलिपुत्र Pat (talk) 14:29, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, please go ahead. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 15:02, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Ms Sarah Welch: Renaming request issued, should be effective in a few hours. Thanks पाटलिपुत्र Pat (talk) 15:12, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
