editHere is a Scientific Journal reference about breeding and genetics that will be very helpful: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/research/bvhip/publications/AJVR.pdf Vci28 (talk) 16:05, 26 September 2012 (UTC) Instead of making a history section I think it would be better to make a background section. The history section would be too short but a background section could be very long and I think it would set the following sections up better. Vci28 (talk) 12:59, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Our proposed idea for Guiding Eyes for the Blind is to improve the page. We have several journal articles that will be used when talking about how the dogs are trained. We are going to improve the introduction. Then we are going to break up who writes what topics. Victoria will write about the History, breeds used, breeding, and Breeders. Mercy will write about puppy raising, formal training, and career change dogs. Jared will write about guiding eyes in the news as well as do the major editing. Vci28 (talk) 02:06, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
- As I look at the parts about training that are currently part of the article, I definitely think my additions will be a good addition to the page. However, I think we will wait to get more feedback on our sections and revisions before posting them and editing the article itself. Saweetmerc (talk) 05:13, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Class project
editHey, not sure if anyone outside of my team is watching this page but Saweetmerc, Vci28, and I are editing this article as part of a class project. We plan on adding a few sections, shortening the introduction, and adding pictures. Here's a rough draft of what our cumulative edits will end up looking like. Over the next couple of days we'll be implementing these edits on the actual page for GEB; please send me or my teammates any tips or suggestions, it would be much appreciated. Thanks. Training Section
editCould this section be abbreviated and have a link to a different, more in depth article? Or are GEB's training practices specific to GEB and not other guide dog schools?Jdk243 (talk) 18:23, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- I agree it's too long. We could refer to their website. Nancydarling (talk) 16:48, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
Review comments
editeThis is a good start. Add more references (I see unreferenced paragraphs) and you can nominate your work at WP:DYK for front page exposure. Note that this nom has to be done within five days of the move (so, within five days of today). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 19:00, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Too promotional
editI am currently in the process of editing this article to reduce the promotional tone of it. Specifically, I have taken out some and will take out more of the 'we were first' and detailed information about their facilities. This is all available on their website.
I also modified some of the language to emphasize that the dogs do not lead visually impaired people around. People who are visually impaired use the dogs as aids to navigate. They work as a team. Nancydarling (talk) 16:52, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
Thoughts on these paragraphs?
editI've made a list of a few lines that I personally find problematic in the Background section.
"Guiding Eyes for the Blind was founded in 1954 by Donald Z. Kauth in a 19th-century farmhouse."
// No location given. Sounds too promotional
"In 1966, Guiding Eyes began breeding their own dogs, and currently breeds more than 90% of the dogs used by the school."
// Feels like an advertisement
"The Canine Development Center (CDC), located in Patterson, New York, is where guide dogs begin their careers."
// Should just say something like "Is located in Patterson"
"Dogs are bred through selective breeding, aiming to maximize qualities required for a working guide dog and minimize health problems that could disrupt or shorten a guide dog's working years."
// This feels like it belong in Breeding rather than Background
"In 2007, the Canine Development Center staff engaged in extensive research in puppy training."
// Extensive is subjective and does not feel fitting.
"Guiding Eyes also acquired an in-house Veterinary Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machine (MRI)."
// Odd detail, does not fit with the rest of the text.
"In 2011, Guiding Eyes launched its One Step Ahead campaign, a fundraising drive to raise $8 million to build a world-class puppy training academy on its Patterson property."
