  • Haile Mariam DesalegneHailemariam Desalegn – A Google search for multiple spellings of the subject's name among Ethiopian government sites (i.e. "+site:gov.et") shows:
  • 198 hits: Hailemariam Desalegn
  • 4 hits: Haile Mariam Desalegn
  • 6 hits: Hailemariam Desalegne
  • 1 hits: Haile Mariam Desalegne

Based on this, I propose that this page be moved to "Hailemariam Desalegn", and the spelling made consistent within, with redirects from the other spellings. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 00:03, 22 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I see the following 5 changes:
  1. Delete Hailemariam Desalegn
  2. Move Haile Mariam Desalegne to Hailemariam Desalegn
  3. Create Haile Mariam Desalegne redirect to Hailemariam Desalegn
  4. Create Hailemariam Desalegne redirect to Hailemariam Desalegn
  5. Edit Haile Mariam Desalegn to redirect to Hailemariam Desalegn

Referred to by given name

edit

This article repeatedly refers to the subject as what appears to be his given name, "Haile Mariam", instead of his surname, "Desalegn", contradictory to normal WP style. Is there a culturally-specific reason for this, or should that be fixed at the same time as the rename? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 04:47, 22 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

There is a culturally specific reason. For an Ethiopian name, the second name is not a surname, but rather the father's name. So, Desalegn is Hailemariam's father. Sometimes a third name is added, the grandfather's name, but there is no single family surname passed down several generations. This is covered in the MOS for Ethiopian topics, and also the prime minister should correctly default indexed under H, not D (if that ever comes up). Lost information

edit

I was surprised that the original source I had stumbled upon to create this article--a profile in the Addis Fortune--somehow dropped out of this article. Part of the explanation is that the link has died--& there is no mirror copy on archive.org--so I suspect someone removed it for that reason. That profile did have some useful information, so that version can be found here in case someone wants to hunt down where that lost page was moved to, & restore this information. -- llywrch (talk) 19:53, 21 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

== Need to standardize spelling ==

We need to decide whether "Desalegne" is spelled with or without the final e, the article before I edited it had it both ways. ˜˜˜˜

Hi! A student of mine has some work in their sandbox that could be added to the article, but I wanted to add it here to see if someone else felt it should be added rather than add it myself. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:47, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
