I don't think they are the same picture in different forms if that's what you mean by 'original'. I'll try to upload a black-and-white version of the smaller image from Britannica too. I have also uploaded a high quality version of the Naturalist image: Image:Naturalist on the River Amazons figure 32.png. There are others with Bates in them too; they should all be uploaded within a month at most. I note that the version I have scanned from is almost certainly a truncated one. Would the two volumes one have more/different images, or would they have just truncated some of the text? Richard001 (talk) 06:23, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
There is one of his grave at Flickr, [1]. I have asked the uploader if he will release it; in case he doesn't we should get someone in the area to take one of it. Richard001 (talk) 23:22, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

During his 11-year stay in the Amazon, Henry Walter Bates is reported as having collected over 14000 species of insects, 8000 of them new to science. This was reported by Clodd (1892: lxiv) in an obituary. As an entomologist working in the Amazon, I would say this estimate is reasonable. These numbers are again relected in this article, but they are given for specimens rather than species.Wloveral (talk) 00:09, 20 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

There are still living relatives of Bates in Leicester. I am one of those Racheal Bailey. Last year I took my son to the storage section of The Natural History Museum in London to view parts of Bates Collection of butterflies. We have books and a few articles regarding him and also i will take a picture to add to the page as the Leicester museum has a plaque dedicated to Bates outside the main entrance. They also have i believe some of his collection. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.17.85.155 (talk) 08:40, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
