Picture

There has got to be a more recent (not to mention more flattering) picture of her... like the one of her in the purple outfit in the "This Is the One" page?

I agree, can someone please put a better picture of her? Preferably from the Deep River or Ultra Blue era? I would thank you 1000 times :). Xbxg32000 (talk) 22:44, 5 October 2009 (UTC)Salman

Oh yeah, even this current one is out of focus and doesn't do her justice. Someone please edit it. Would appreciate much. Oricon website might have some present snapshots of her. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.140.250.241 (talk) 13:41, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Tetris & Nintendo

The passage on Utada's interest in Tetris has been removed repeatedly. I think it should remain, with modifications. It's cited, not controversial, and relates to the subject of the article. It's not mere trivia, it describes the subject's interests. It relates to her work with Nintendo, promoting its game system, and as part of that, she participated in the Nintendo DS event promoting the game system by playing the game.

I don't think it merits being in the lede, though. More appropriate would be a mention, in the body, not in the lede. There should probably be a short section on her prmotional work and endorsements, which would be a good place for this to live.

Some sources (on both Tetris and her Nintendo work in general): [1] (source previously cited); [2]; [3]; [4] (Japanese); [5]; [6]; [7] TJRC (talk) 15:47, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

The article which was used as the citation just says she's a Tetris freak, nothing about her promoting the game. So it was removed it's trivial and just her hobby. None of the sources you've listed say anything about her promoting Tetris all they talk about is Utada's score and her playing in the tournament and losing. However, one of them says something about her becoming the spokesperson for Nintendo DS, which I think you need to ask if it is a reliable source. I'm all for a section that says she promoted this and endorsement that but only if there is a source that actually says she promoted and endorsed said item. 月 (Moon)暁 (Sunrise) 17:01, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
The tournament is the promotion. It was a Nintendo tournament where the winners of a Tetris contest were awarded the chance to play against Utada. So it's not just random bloggers who think she is a good player, but Nintendo as well, though obviously they used her for the promotion because of her fame in her regular career. That she went 26-to-4 against some of the best in Japan is more than just 'good'. Nintendo even brought out the best players from inside the company to play against her. She went 1-to-3 and 3-to-2 against them. [8] Identity0 (talk) 17:36, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

There should definitely be some information regarding her playing Tetris. According to this IGN article, she's been in tournaments and has stated "I've been playing Tetris every day since I was five."

That's how I found out about her. It's definitely worth mention. Someone already linked to the IGN article above. Clearly it's not being handled correctly, since someone simply outright deletes it, rather than request better citation. Shin00bi (talk) 19:31, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Interesting comment Shin00bi, that it's how you found her. Worth thinking about.
I'm not the person who is deleting the Tetris information, but I agree it should be deleted. The question is whether the information is encyclopedic. Example: Maybe she ties her shoelaces in a non-standard knot -- that's a fact that's so trivial by itself that it might not make it into a book-length biography (or autobiography).
But ... and I am NOT suggesting this is true ... that she plays Tetris every day might be significant, if it demonstrated she had Obsessive-compulsive disorder. (That's actually the first thing that occurred to me, reading your comment.) Even if she did have OCD, one would want to see that tied to her professional work -- to what makes her notable. I.e., just stating that she plays Tetris every day is peculiar, but not necessarily encyclopedic. Regards, Piano non troppo (talk) 21:46, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Japanese-American?

I know she was born in New York, but since her parents are both Japanese and she is over 22, there is no way that she is still an American citizen. Was she ever? --Do Not Talk About Feitclub (contributions) 09:43, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

She said she in a radio interview that she has both American and Japanese citizenship. And what do you mean "was she ever?" If you are born in United States you are an American citizen regardless of where your parents are from. 月 (Moon)暁 (Sunrise) 09:49, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
That's not true at all or there would be a million tourist babies with US citizenship. — SMcCandlish   Talk⇒ ɖ∘¿¤þ   Contrib. 08:56, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Birthright citizenship in the United States agrees with what Moon-sunrise said. And accroding to Birth tourism, there are many tourist babies with US citizenship. --Kusunose 09:28, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Japanese law allows dual citizenship only until you're 21, so by now she would have had to choose between one or the other. Anyone got a source on her status? Identity0 (talk) 17:19, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Utada presumably holds only Japanese citizenship in the eyes of the Japanese authorities, but Japanese law would not affect her position under US law. As far as the US government is concerned she would only lose her US citizenship if she signed an oath of renunciation in the presence of a "U.S. consular or diplomatic officer". According to Japanese nationality law#Loss of citizenship:
Articles 14 and 15 require any person who holds multiple citizenship to make a declaration of choice between the ages of twenty and twenty-two, in which they choose to renounce either their Japanese citizenship or their foreign citizenship(s). If they fail to do so, the Minister of Justice may demand a declaration of choice at any time, and if the citizen fails to make the declaration within one month, their Japanese citizenship is automatically revoked. A renunciation of foreign citizenship made before Japanese officials may be considered by the foreign state as having no legal effect. This is the case with, for example, United States citizenship.
Therefore it's most likely that Utada is a US citzen in the eyes of the US government. --GagHalfrunt (talk) 12:44, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
The issue is not how many passports she holds. She didn't move to Japan until she was about 15, and she moved back to the US again six years later. Somebody who lives abroad for six years does not automatically become part foreign. This sounds like a marketing dodge to make her more acceptable to the Japanese market. Piano non troppo (talk) 13:11, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

You should see [9]. The system was established in 1985. However, she was born in 1983.--ACSE (talk) 13:42, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

There's no reference which actually proves that she holds US citizenship at the moment, this is all just speculation. JoshuSasori (talk) 06:46, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
There's not even anything in this sketchy article (which wallows in song-related detailia while forgetting to be a biography) about her living in the US at all. According to the article she is from Tokyo but happened to ahve been born in New York, implying no US residency other than in her infancy. It's kind of important information, since it might explain her thick, rhotic US West Coast accent (in English; I'm guessing her Japanese is unaccented, or she wouldn't have been so popular there), and the decidedly Western thematic elements of a lot of her (English-language) songs. — SMcCandlish   Talk⇒ ɖ∘¿¤þ   Contrib. 08:56, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Kingdom Hearts

Utada has been reported to have ended her relationship with Kingdom Hearts. See, e.g., [10]. Does anyone have a WP:RS for this, and if so, shall we add it to the article? TJRC (talk) 00:01, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Vocal Register

Where is she in terms of the vocal register? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.176.179.147 (talk) 21:52, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Couldn't agree more. She can hit the low keys and high ones as well. It would be nice for those who are new to her music to know what's her vocal range is like. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.140.250.241 (talk) 13:43, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Singles

just letting you know that i removed the main sources of the some of the articles due to WP:ELNO#12, which means we do not use other wiki's as a source. Because of this some of the japanese singles do not meet the general notability guideline. So i suggest you look for the articles and give expansion or merge them if possible.Bread Ninja (talk) 17:19, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism threat

please do semi-protect the article. Dominichikaru (talk) 15:52, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

(Non-Admin comment)  Not done: requests for changes to the page protection level should be made at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. I don't think there is enough recent vandalism history that an admin will protect the page, but if if you still want to request protection head to that page and submit a request. Utada hiatus

I think it might be too extensive, given that very little has actually happened regarding her hiatus (she hasn't even been on hiatus for a year). I think this needs to be shortened quite a bit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.190.60.170 (talk) 22:12, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

I removed some bulk of unneeded detail from the page and shortened it quite a bit. Obviously there could still be some work left to do, so feel free to remove/add/change some pieces you feel may need it.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeimii (talkcontribs) 18:52, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Ovarian cancer?

Weird that this article belongs to "ovarian cancer survivors" category, yet there is not any mention of it in the article itself. 85.131.103.90 (talk) 18:01, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

It's mentioned: "Before the release of Utada's third album, Deep River, the artist underwent surgery after being diagnosed with a benign ovarian tumor, causing Utada to put her promotional activities on hold." TJRC (talk) 04:04, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
