Largest city

edit

In what way is it the largest city? Not by population[1], where it comes 7th. Fram 11:07, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

At the end of the page of Ibadan, there is a link saying that Sade comes from here. That link doesn't work properly. So if someone who knows how to fix it can do so, that would be nice.

Population

edit

What is the population? 3.8 Million as stated in the text or 300,000 as stated in the side panel? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.4.49.220 (talk) 19:00, 16 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

3.8 Million is likely correct, as the Columbia Gazetteer says the 1991 population estimate was 1,263,000. Meateatingvegan 19:24, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, first of all, 300,000 is surely incorrect. The source currently used says the 1991 census was 1 835 300, and that 3 847 472 is a 2007 estimate. But you say the Columbia Gazetteer estimates that the 1991 was 1,263,000? And to add to the confusion, this page estimates the 2005 population was 2 044 000. At least one of these three sources is wrong. Picaroon
This website (www.citypopulation.de) lists the population of Ibadan at 1 835 300 as of the 1991 census. This figure is exactly what the total is for all the following local government areas when they're added: Ibadan North, Ibadan North East, Ibadan North West, Ibadan South East, Ibadan South West, Akinyele, Egbeda, Ido, Lagelu, Oluyole and Ona-Ara. So, I assume that the administrative boundaries for the city of Ibadan is defined by these lga:s. The National Bureau of Statistics in Nigeria have recently published the provisional results for lga:s at the 2006 census, and the total for the lga:s mentioned above is 2 550 593 inhabitants. I will change the population figure for Ibadan to this in the article. --Pjred 17:12, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
To further confuse things, the World Gazetteer site (linked above) lists Ibadan twice, at #71 and again at #76, with populations of 4,987,903 and 4,826,891, respectively, both much higher than any of the other numbers quoted so far. Looking more closely, this is not the only Nigerian city with duplicate listings on that site. I see doubles for Aba, Abeokuta, Abuja, Enugu, Ibadan, Lagos, Onitsha, Oshbogo, and Port Harcourt, as well as a few for other countries. (None nearly as bad as Nigeria, though - Baghdad and Basrah in Iraq, and Luanda in Angola, Nashik in India, and Louisville in the US.) This does bring the validity of that site into question somewhat, but it's cited on this and many other WP pages. Any way to verify this data? Lurlock (talk) 22:51, 19 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
The World Gazetteer is not a useful source in this case. Much of the statistics presented there are their own calculations, and to my point of view, they are way off when it comes to some Nigerian cities. I guess they haven't used any result of the 2006 population census for their 2008 calculations, at least not for Ibadan. The best is of course to wait for the official 2006 census results for cities to be presented, which to my knowledge haven't been done yet. However, Ibadan is a special case, as it's possible to identify the LGA:s within the defined city (see my comment above), which means that it's possible to update the population figure using the total population of all LGA:s for the city. For my thoughts on using the World Gazetteer as a source, read this.--Pjred (talk) 08:41, 20 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ìlú Èbá-Ọdàn

edit

What the words above mean? Is that the genuine name of the city (in the local language)? What is the local language? How does it read? Thanx. Just OmerTalk 14:36, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Èbá-Ọdàn: It means on the edge (Èbá) of the grassland/savannah (Ọdàn). It was the original name of the settlement that later developed into a city. The city is however known as Ibadan by everyone. The honorifics (oriki) for the town uses the word Ibadan. The local language is called Yoruba and is a tonal language (differences in intonation can change the meanings of words). The alphabet is anglicised. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.222.149.74 (talk) 14:08, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
