Proposed merge

edit

While I agree that this is a "dog of an article" is the solution to merge it with Mandatory detention? They are slightly but significantly different concepts that at best overlap. Although, this the probably more the fault of Mandatory detention. I'd suggest moving that article to Mandatory immigration detention to clarify it. For example, there are policies of Mandatory sentencing for all sorts of crime - ie, a policy that removes a judges' discretion to not incarcerate someone where incarceration is actually an option. This is not the same as Mandatory IMMIGRATION detention. --Merbabu 03:37, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've merged the other way because mandatory detention merely defined a term, whereas this article is describing a topic of international relavence with lots of recent contributions. Also, the word mandatory is not useful, as this is in relation to political policies that become law, and the laws are more often than not complex, so the actual effect is never mandatory. IOW, the term mandatory detention is used by politicians to make it sound more necessary than it is. John Vandenberg 02:32, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proposed move

While sweeping changes are afoot, what do people think about moving the article to Detention (immigration) ? John Vandenberg 03:00, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

"The Immigration and Customs Enforcement has stated that the number of deaths per capita in detention is dramatically lower for ICE detainees than for U.S. prison and jail populations" -What does ICE mean? I was trying to research the meaning through wiki, and the only article that mentions ICE detainees dosnt disambiguate it's meaning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.219.255.133 (talk) 05:19, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adding on to and Expanding the United States Section

edit

I'm planning to add the following information to the section on Immigration Detention in the U.S.: specific detention centers across the U.S.; the debate surrounding the privatization of these centers; the interaction between these centers and local communities that house them; an expansion of the information on human rights abuses, especially concerning medical care in these centers; the relocation of inmates to centers far from areas where their family members reside; the expansion of this centers in tandem with the expansion of INS and ICE; how the conditions of these centers are monitored and managed; and how immigrants are brought to these centers.
