editI moved the shooting information above all of the lists. Prose before lists. I took off the terrorist label because I really don't think we should be that loose with the definition. Has any political group made a claim. --Gbleem 18:19, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
Needs more substance. The grammer is just fine, as it is better than most articles I have seen. Perhaps more can be done if the article reaches featured article status.
Morris Travers
editThe page refers to Morris Travers as Morris Travers FRS. What's FRS ? If it's a degree, perhaps it could be moved into brackets ? What do you guys think ? Manik Raina 11:33, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
FRS
editFellow of the Royal Society. A link to FRS would be nice.
Departments and links
editThe section listing all departments and their weblinks is not required. This information can be obtained from the official website. I suggest we remove this section. It should be more like University of California article. Let us discuss if there is any objection. ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 00:32, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- There are people who like to get the info from Wikipedia as its pages are typically in more readable format as compared to the propritary websites where info may not be optimally organized. Later on some Department will have their own independent pages like that of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research department in IISc.
Keep the section. Vjdchauhan 05:46, 1 December 2006 (UTC).
- I can understand your point but I have to disagree a bit. I think this page should not be seen as a replacement for official IISc website content. All the department links are easily available from the main IISc page. We can decide to keep the section but the content of the section should be changed. Instead of addressing each department separately we can do it based on the "divisions" as in this page [1]. This way we can deal with the corresponding departments under the respective divisions. This will make the main article more readable. ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 20:52, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
A better photo is needed
editWe need a better photograph of the main building. The present one (Image:Iisc-Administration Office.jpg) looks like a poor stitch. --Kprateek88(Talk | Contribs) 07:23, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
City name change
editSince the name of the city changed to Bengaluru, I think we need to change the Bangalore in the article to Bengaluru. I'd change it if there is a consensus about it. But generally, the name of the institution does not change. For example IIT Madras retains its name even after the city got a new name, Chennai. This is the case with other IITs as well, for example IIT Bombay.Lokesh 2000 09:59, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- I have changes all instances of Bangalore to Bengaluru. We may or may not support the name change but it is the official name of the city. I also added a clarification to the lead para. ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 17:05, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
- The name of the university is just "Indian Institute of Science". city name is not part of the official name. There is only one IISc, unlike many IITs. -Engineering Guy (talk) 16:29, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
Distinguished alumni
editThe awards are supposed to be conferred on IISc alumni in recognition of their excellent contribution towards growth of science and technology. But majority of the awardees are ex-faculty who did routine academic research. Many other got it because they held a management position or got rich in IT business. The awards are biased for some fields. Looks like there is no reliable source to assess the quality of this section. Therefore as per wikipedia clean-up suggestion this section need to be removed. Naayar (talk) 07:53, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Minor correction
editNow there are four dining mess (not five).
I also added the information on shuttle service that connects neighbouring institutes.

"Notable people" lists
editThere are currently two lists for notable faculty and alumni. But there is no explanation about why any of these people are notable. Each entry should have a one-line summary of why the person is notable. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 06:23, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
Remove Illusive lines
edit"IISc is widely regarded as India's finest institution in its field,[4][5][6][7][8] and has been ranked at number 11 and 18 worldwide (and ranked 3rd and 6th in Asia) when considering the criteria of Citations per Faculty in 2014 and 2015 respectively"
I don't understand the meaning of "its field". IISc is the best institute in India as per all the reputed international surveys. And then the ranks as per the criteria of citation per faculty which is also important, but most of the layman dont understand such criteria. Therefore, i request the editors to mention the BRIC rank, Asia rank and India rank of IISc as per the the latest surveys. And then one may mention ranks as per specific criteria (such as citation) which makes the article more sensible.
I know the ranks are mentioned in other paragraphs, but highlighting it in introduction section is necessary.

editWouldn't it look good if we merge the December 2005 attacks with history. It's so odd and uncanny, I would remark. TheNeutronStargrazer (talk) 16:17, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
