Island's population
editThere seems to be nothing but utter confusion on Wikipedia as to this island's population. The English Wikipedia says it's 14000, but the Afrikaans article says 54315, as does the German one, whereas the Japanese and Swedish articles seem to agree with the English one. The Lithuanian and Polish articles seem to give a figure of 42200, and the Swahili and Finnish 60000, while the Portuguese article says 42407. The French and Romanian articles give no hint.
So, what is the Island's true population?
Whatever the answer is, I have come across an article on the 'Net, here — from the People's Daily of all sources — saying that Mozambique is set to hold a census this month. If they post detailed results online, perhaps that will yield a definitive answer. Keep watching!

- Hi Kelisi, very good comparative work! The reason for such confusion might be due to the fact that when people talk about the "Island of Mozambique" they are talking about different things. The island proper is very small, 1 sq. km only and because of the civil war it is extremely overcrowded (the island was a safe haven). According to the 1997 census the population of the island proper was 14,889 inhabitants, almost 15,000 per sq. km! But in administrative terms the "City of the Island of Mozambique", before a district, now a municipality, also includes a much larger continental part, the Administrative Post of Lumbo, which has an area of 225 sq. km and had a population of 27,518. Together the City had a population of 42,407. Who knows what the population is today. Actually we should know very soon. The 2007 population census ends here tomorrow and the first provisional data should be available in November. Keep the good work! Teixant 22:04, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Merging
editThere was until this evening an article called Moçambique (city), which now redirects to this article. It contained nothing that isn't in this article, too, but it gave a population figure of 42,207, just like the Portuguese article. Kelisi 02:34, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
