The 'company' J & A Brown formed in 1843 was a privately family owned firm and was just known as J & A Brown NOT J & A Brown Ltd until the death of John Brown and the amalgamation in 1931 with publically owned Abermain Seaham Collieries Ltd to form J & A Brown and Abermain Seaham Collieries Ltd.
