American vs. Filipino/American

edit

This is a WP:BRD discussion following on this reversion.

I don't have a strong POV on this either way, but it probably deserves discussion. Ethnicity redirects to the Ethnic group article which says, "An ethnic group or ethnicity is a category of people who identify with each other, ...", and see e.g., this. I'm OK with whatever the consensus of regular editors here is. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 16:13, 23 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • @Wtmitchell: According to WP:ETHNICITY, only the "country of which the person is a citizen, national or permanent resident" should be mentioned in the opening paragraph (for Green, this is the United States). No sources I can find clearly state that Green is also a citizen of the Philippines, so his nationality should only be listed as American in the opening paragraph and infobox. This is outside of my usual interest area and I've been pursuing it following on noticing a change by chance. FYI, the U.S. determines citizenship by a combination of jus soli and jus sanguinis and the Philippines by jus sanguinis only, with the details having changed in both countries as their respective laws have changed over the years. Re the Philippines, see Philippine nationality law#Citizenship by birth and sources cited there. According to this outside article, when asked about the possibility of playing for the Philippines in the future, “Yes of course,” said Green, whose mother and grandfather are Filipinos. (emphasis mine). I think that point is relevant in view of the article's comment about Green's interest in playing for the Philippines. It's a small point, though, only tangentially related to the thrust of the article, and messy to cover there in the face of an edit war ignoring WP:DUE. I'm going to remove this article from my watchlist. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 13:51, 10 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Change Green's high school to San Joaquin Memorial High School. While he attended Prolific Prep his last year of school, he graduated from San Joaquin Memorial. I am the communications specialist for the school and have records confirming this. https://www.yourcentralvalley.com/sports/jalen-green-transfers-back-to-memorial-where-he-plans-to-graduate/ Japplegatesjmhs (talk) 17:59, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Change "He is the third player in the NBA of Filipino descent, following the likes of Jordan Clarkson and Raymond Townsend." to "He is the third player in the NBA of Filipino descent, following Jordan Clarkson and Raymond Townsend."

"The likes of" is superfluous. Conorpcarroll (talk) 23:14, 10 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
