Jalpaiguri Map

edit

The map of Jalpaiguri is showing a wrong location of Jalpaiguri town. In fact its so inaccurate that its placed away from its district itself ! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.248.70.235 (talk) 06:27, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Culture

edit

Major festivals observed at Jalpaiguri include Durga puja, Chhath Puja, Ganesh puja, Laxmi puja, Saraswati puja, Dipawali, etc. Baishaki mela is one of the oldest mela in Jalpaiguri. The fashion week during winters are celebrated for entertainment. Various concerts are organized by local clubs, which continues from mid-October to mid-December.

Lot of fairs and carnivals take place in Jalpaiguri. The famous fares in Jalpaiguri are Boishakhi Mela, Hosto Shilpo Mela, Book Fair, Lexpo Fair, Handicraft fair, Gramosri Mela, Sangeet, etc. Most of the fairs happens in The Jalpaiguri District Sports Complex Stadium.[1] The city has a rich cultural exercise in it. 117.251.144.94 (talk) 10:47, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Article protection

edit

I have protected the article against editing by unregistered users for a short period because of the disruptive editing by various IPs. These edits include:

  • removing various tags (for neutrality, clean up, original research issues, etc.) without fixing the problems that have been identified;
  • adding a badly formatted list of shopping malls (Wikipedia is not a directory);
  • adding repeated links (WP:REPEATLINK).

If this disruptive behaviour continues, the article protection will have to be expanded and extended, which means that fewer editors will be able to edit. That would be unfortunate. I encourage editors to learn about Wikipedia p[olicies and style, and discuss edits on the talk page. Ground Zero | t 10:41, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Note that as disruption continued after the above protection, from at least one confirmed account, the protection has been extended to full for a week. [1] --220 of Borg 01:33, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Discussion of edits

edit

I will start the discussion of edits. Please do not revert these changes until after a consensus has been reached here. Please refer to each issue by its number in your comments. Thank you.

  1. Tags for neutrality, clean up, original research issues, etc., must not be removed until those issues have been addressed. they have not been addressed yet. These have been removed without explanation or improvement many times, so it is appropriate that any editor or IP that does so again be immediately blocked from editing.
  2. The list of shopping malls violated WP:NOT in my opinion, but I would be willing to live with it if it were properly formatted per WP:MOS and WP:HEAD.
  3. Links should follow the Wikipedia policy on repeated links and links to ordinary English words -- see WP:OVERLINK.
  4. "Art gallery" here is not a proper noun so it should not be capitalised, and per WP:OVERLINK, it should not be linked.
  5. The 2011 population figure has been referenced to a reliable source. Per Wikipedia's policy on verifiability, this should only be updated where another reference to a WP:reliable source can be provided.
  6. Adding "a total of" to "It has 45 wards..." doesn't change the meaning. Why make the sentence longer?
  7. Per WP:ACRONYM, "information technology" is more useful an explanation to readetrs than "IT" as some readers may not be familiar with the acronym.
  8. Relative expressions of time ("recent years", recently) should be avoided because a reader doesn't know when the article was written.
  9. User pages must not be linked in articles.
  10. The present tense of a verb indicates the current condition of something, so "currently" is not a useful modifier for the present tense.
  11. It seems unlikely that articles will be created for shopping malls in this city. Let's leave out the redlinks. Links can be added in if articles are created.

Ground Zero | t 12:20, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this concise analysis of specific content issues, Ground Zero. I hope this discussion has a positive effect, but as I left many messages, and a specific invitation to discuss their edits on the talkpage of user:Mohan Bose, but was totally ignored, I have my doubts!
Item 5. Totally concur, per WP:Verify. It seems that figures have been changed to 'boost' Jalpaigurs 'image'. Population, and literacy were increased without any reason being given. This pattern has continued on to List of cities and towns in India by population where the un-sourced higher population figure was also added/reverted/re-added and again reverted.
Could you expand on the mention at item 9. 'linking to users pages'?, as I never noticed that.220 of Borg 13:08, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I believe I've found it [2], where Mohan Bose, the towns mayor was wikilinked to User:Mohan Bose! --220 of Borg 13:38, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
That was it. One of the editors insisting on these edits has the same name as the mayor of the city. Hm. Let's assume that the population and literacy figures were changed to reflect updated information, rather than to mislead, but such a change requires a source. Regards, Ground Zero | t 15:51, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Took me a while to realise that, but the editor also makes the claim on their userpage. Unfortunately no email address, or I'd be tempted to sent them a very stern Email. >:-\ --220 of Borg 07:36, 29 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Census figures

edit

Re. 5) The figures that have been changed are certainly out of place considering that they do not agree with the cited source, and as the editors have not bothered to explain their reasoning I will have to assume (AGF) that they are for the 'city' (if it is such) plus surrounding sub-urban areas. (not assuming GF I hypothesise thay are inflated so Jalpaiguri looks bigger and more important! Maybe the Mayor should then get a pay rise! ;-/)

The 2011 census, the cited source, says for "Jalpaiguri UA", where 'UA' seems to mean "urban agglomeration":

Population 2011 (per cited Census source):

Population:169,013
Male :85,226
Female:83,787

A look at the official 'city' website here gives another set of figures:

Population 2011

Population: 38,69,675 (3,869,675)
Male: 19,80,068 (1,980,068)
Female: 18,89,607 (1,889,607)

Population 2001

Population: 34,01,173 (3,401,173) Census: 2,30,145 (230,145)
Male: 17,51,145 (1,751,145) Census: 50,570
Female: 16,50,028 (1,650,028) Census: 49,642

As shown above, these are way different from the census. Total 2011 population is about 20 time higher than the 'official' census number. :-o

Note that in India it is the practise to write the figures as shown, which is confusing to a 'western' hemisphere reader. The bracketed figures are my 'translation'.

The percentage figures given do not appear in the cited source. They may have been calculated from the numbers given, which I presume is allowed? But I still find them hard to trust. Perhaps the raw figures should be quoted instead. --220 of Borg 04:52, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

The above website mentioned is the official website of the whole district (county) and not the "city". The official website of the Municipality is http://jalpaigurimunicipality.org/. The website clearly mentions the area of the municipality to be 12.95sqkm (http://jalpaigurimunicipality.org/JM/index.php/about-us/history.html). I have identified the following uncited dubious claims:
  • Claiming it to be a city (though the distinction is subjective, generally places having more than 10 lakhs (1 million) or having a municipal corporation is considered to be a city). Jalpaiguri UA has a population of 1.69 lakhs and does not have a Corporation (it has a Municipality only).
  • Claim of having a Municipal Corporation, when it is only a Municipality. The head of the body is a chairman and not mayor.
  • No citation for total area of metro/UA (which I believe is inflated).
  • Jalpaiguri is a well-planned city and the municipal corporation ... - No citation for being well planned or having a municipal corporation.
  • Jalpaiguri has an airport of its own named the Jalpaiguri Airport towards the northern end of the city at Kranti off the River Panga with all modern passenger facilities but no airlines operate in this airport but steps are taken to resume flights from this airport. - Citation has a dead link. Could not trace existence of this airport (individual page deleted multiple time).
  • The Simanacharya Tours and Travels operates in all modes of transport. - Looks like a promotion/advertisement of a local tour operator.
  • It is autonomous and is considered the third most reputed and significant engineering college in West Bengal after that Shibpur and Jadavpur. - Uncited claims
  • In past list of shopping malls have been inserted which are malls actually located in Siliguri, which is situated 40+ kms away. Amartyabag TALK2ME 07:30, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Amartyabag. As there has been no response from Mohan Base or other editors, I have made a number of changes to address these comments. Are there more changes needed? Ground Zero | t 21:04, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Edit warring on this page

edit

As the edit warring by unregistered editors is continuing, I have protected this article from editing by unregistered users. It is unfortunate that this is necessary. Let's be clear: you cannot get your own way in Wikipedia by edit warring. I have begun the discussion of edits above. If you want to make changes, you will have to convince other editors of their merit. Ground Zero | t 13:11, 29 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bose came back again about 7 hours ago. I have now reverted them. They have started using edit summaries [3] at Institute of Pharmacy, Jalpaiguri but:
I didn't understand y u reverted ut.. Anywayzz, I just undid ur reverts, u know Mr. :)):
Doesnt fill me with confidence. And makes me even more doubtful they really are 'Mayor' Mohan Bose. 220 of Borg 14:02, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Edit request 6 September

edit

The lead currently says, in part:

"As of 2011, the city had more than 3 lakh residents. The city has become an important trade center of West Bengal. It is a principal commercial, tourism, transportation, and educational center of the North Bengal region. It lies 42 kilometers away from Siliguri which is its twin city."

The 3 lakh (300,000/3,00,000) population figure is not correct according to the sourced census figures as has been discussed above. This single sentence should be removed per WP:Verify.

All of these statements appear to lack support in the text of the page.

I request that the underlined sentence be removed. Or that the entire 3 sentences be removed, unless I have missed something in the text that reliably supports the last 2 sentences. Regards, 220 of Borg 05:17, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Since the disruptive editor has been blocked, I've downgraded the protection to "autoconfirmed only". You can edit it yourself :) --regentspark (comment) 15:28, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Done, section removed as stated. Editor only blocked for a week though. :-/ ≈ 2 days to go. [4] --220 of Borg 18:32, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
You're right. I thought the editor was indef blocked as a sock but had confused them with someone else. Regardless, they'll end up blocked for a long time if the disruption continues. Will watch this page. --regentspark (comment) 23:59, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Regent Spark, this page has been disrupted by numerous, now indeffed socks, and IPs. I and others tend, AGF being rather strained now, toward the Editor/s in Question being more of the same person/s.
Thank you for adding to the 'watchers'. :-)

Don't know what Ankurbakshi86 is on about here, according to the source the population figures are from the 2011 Indian census, I should know as I added the (now hidden) note that they were from page 5 of the PDF source. :-/ Perhaps they didn't notice that the page has the 2001 and 2011 demographics? --220 of Borg 13:46, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Population

edit

This has already been discussed above, but to repeat:-

  • The official census here gives a population of the UA as 169,013 and places it 19th in West Bengal
  • Census 2011.co here gives the city population as 107,341 and Jalpaiguri Metropolitan area as 169,002
These are the official figures, which are the ones cited in the lead, infobox and demographics sections of the article - Arjayay (talk) 09:23, 18 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
