Episcopal Succession
editIn 2003 Gayle Elizabeth Harris succeed Barbara Harris as Suffragan Bishop of Massachusetts. This is the first case of one women replacing another as a Bishop within the concept of Apostolic Succession, which is claimed by the Anglican Communion. Both women were elected to their positions.
In 2006 Solveig Fiske succeeded Rosemarie Köhn as Bishop of Hamar in the Church of Norway, the state Lutheran Church which like the Anglican Communion claims Apostolic Succession. This is the first case of a female Diocesan Bishop succeeding another, however Köhn was a government appointee, while Fiske was elected.
In 2007 Antje Jackelén succeeded Christina Odenberg as Bishop of Lund in the Church of Sweden, which is the former state Lutheran Church which also claims Apostolic Succession. It appears Odenberg was also a government appointee, while Jackelén was elected.
In 2008 Alexander succeeded Victoria Matthews as Bishop of Edmonton. Both Alexander and Matthews were elected to their positions.
A further case has occured in 2009 where Eva Brunne succeeded Caroline Krook as Bishop of Stockholm.
These are the only cases I was able to find as of today 8 August 2010 of women succeeding other women as Bishops while claiming Apostolic Succession. There may be other cases within the United Methodist Church and the other various Methodist Episcopal Churches through the United States which do not claim Apostolic Succession.
With this information the claim in the article that Alexander is the first female Diocesan Bishop of succeed another in the Anglican Communion is valid, as well as the claim she is the first elected female Diocesan Bishop to succeed another elected female Diocesan Bishop.
