Place of Birth

edit

It says on the IMDB that Bennett was born in Burbank, California. However it says on both here and TV.com that he was born in Houston, Texas. Which of these are true? Kitty-Kat 19:29, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

To be honest, I got no idea, since not a lot of info is around about Jeff. So, we might have to research it.--esanchez, Camp Lazlo fan! 04:49, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I just looked up Jeff's file at Voice Chasers and not only was there a place of birth missing but they got his birth year wrong! Kitty-Kat 15:34, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Worth Noting?

edit

Should it be worth noting that he sounds kinda like the the lead singer of Blind Guardian? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.43.180.69 (talk) 11:35, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Have any reliable sources found it worth noting? If nobody else has said it, we shouldn't. --OnoremDil 11:38, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Blind Guardian - that is hilarious. But - isn't he also Peppermint Larry on 'Misadventures of Flapjack"? That's a big role.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.193.89.146 (talk) 14:10, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Years active

edit

As I pointed out at the AfD, sources regarding the years that Jeff Bennett has been active are dubious and contradictory. In the past, several different years have been included; 1984, 1988, 1991 nad 1994 have all surfaced as the beginning of his career. When I first nominated this article at AfD, the IMDB entry included a filmography dating back to 1994 but, between 1 and 7 March, the entry had been expanded to include roles back to 1988 and now apparently includes entries back to 1984. Allmovie, which seems considered a reliable source, says 1988, while IMDB, which is not considered reliable, says 1984 so which do we believe? My money's on Allmovie but we need something definite and IMDB isn't really enough. --AussieLegend (talk) 06:15, 11 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think "contradictory" is overstating the case. I mean, Allmovie doesn't say that his career didn't start in 1984. It could just be that the sources giving later dates have incomplete information. —Paul A (talk) 06:58, 11 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
"It could be" is speculative. That Allmovie doesn't show a history before 1988 clearly implies that this was the beginning of his career but the point is, we don't have a reliable source. Speculation is OR. --AussieLegend (talk) 04:59, 12 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Two Different people?

edit

There seems to be some mix up between voice actor Jeff Glenn Bennett and Friday the.........actor Jeff Bennett. They have the same first and last names, but are clearly two different individuals. Therefore Jeff Glenn Bennett's credits on the movie and his appearance on Married with Children were not actually his roles but the other one's. I think we should clarify all of this, because it is definately confusing his filmography. BHillbillies (talk) 10:31, 29 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sheriff Callie Character?

Saw his name in the credits for Sheriff Callie's Wild West, but who does Jeff Bennett voice? 67.85.241.84 (talk) 23:15, 28 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Name in first mention

edit

"Jeffrey Glenn Bennett" is his formal legal name as far as the references show. He uses short forms of his given name "Jeff" and "Glen" as could be expected. Per the Wikipedia manual of style, MOS:LEGALNAME and WP:QUOTENAME, only the full legal name should be used in first mention and only include in quotes after the given names uncommon hypocorisms (diminutives and nicknames) which neither "Jeff" or "Glen" are so they don't belong there. The fact that Glen could be a different name then Glenn isn't really relevant here as it is a short form of Glenn and an alternative spelling of what is pronounced the exact same way. The intent of the MOS in this case is to give a formal looking introduction of the person on first mention in the article by using the legal name on first mention. Excessive uses of quoted names that are not part of the legal name detract from that. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:09, 20 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

I agree we should stick to simply calling him by his legal name in the lead. Wikipedia leads have a tendency to accumulate too much cruft. Keeping things simple and minimalist is best, I think. Listing every obvious permutation of someone's legal name, as some Wikipedia articles attempt to do, just makes the article harder to read. The example of Genghis Khan in MOS:LEAD is an outlier, but it shows how far this can go. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 20:51, 20 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I understand you're point. However, the name "Glen" is not simply an alternative spelling of the name. He also, if you look at his credits, has used both names in his history. Thus, this is a time where, due to his credits, he can be listed as both.Tapper930 (talk) 01:35, 21 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Looking at his credits on IMDb, I see "Jeff Glen Bennett" but don't see "Glen Bennett" used. I can't see Glen and Glenn as being different names, just variations in spelling of the same name, not different names. Also seeing "Glen" after Glenn in the legal name intro looks and sounds weird as well when reading it out loud. The only time a name should be in quotes there is for uncommon hypocorisms which "Glen" definitely isn't. Geraldo Perez (talk) 02:57, 21 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
When I look at his credits on IMDB, he is credited with two names, as you state. Jeff "Glen" Bennett, and Jeff "Glenn" Bennett. This name being similarly spelled is one thing, but it is not a similar name. It is like a person using the name Jon over John, or Thom over Tom. The other thing is that he is taking an alternative middle name instead of an alternative first name. To solve this, we can also simply put a note on the page that states that he goes by Glenn and Glen in crediting.Tapper930 (talk) 04:26, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't plan to get too deep into this conversation, but I will point out that we are making an assumption that he "goes by" both. It's possible that one is correct, and mistakes made by others have resulted in him being credited weirdly. As to which is correct, I have no idea. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 04:34, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
No assumption is being made to state that he is credited with both names. All that must be done is look at the credits in his programs. For example, in the film "Looney Tunes Back in Action" he is credited as Jeff "Glenn" Bennett, while in "Samurai Jack" he is credited as Jeff "Glen" Bennett. Thus, all that must be done is state that he has been credited as both names in his roles.Tapper930 (talk) 03:58, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think it unnecessary for such a minute detail like this, particularly in the lead intro. Could do what IMDb does and note how credited in the filmography entries notes column, or maybe as part of an intro to the section explain the different ways he gets credited. Geraldo Perez (talk) 04:11, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
All I am stating is to put the mention somewhere that will be noticed. It does not necessarily have to be a the front of the main intro, but it would look better to add it in, considering all that he has at that spot are simply his biggest roles.Tapper930 (talk) 19:33, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I doubt there will be any confusion about this and any reader will understand minor name variations as meaning the same person. Geraldo Perez (talk) 23:39, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm having trouble understanding what the crux of the disagreement here is, but if the idea is to list Glen and Glenn next to each other in the lead, I think that's bizarre. Do we know definitively that "Glenn" is his legal spelling and not Glen? If we don't know for sure, I think the way to go is: omit both Glenn and Glen from the lead and infobox entirely, and if we have occasion to, indicate in his filmography notes that he was credited as something other than "Jeff Bennett" the way IMDb does. "Credited as Jeff Glenn Bennett", "Credited as Jeff Glen Bennett", etc. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 00:16, 24 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
All I am saying is to mention at some point that he has been credited as both. I am not saying that there should be an entire section dedicated to it, but simply a single sentence that state "He has been credited as "Glenn" as well as "Glen" in his roles."Tapper930 (talk) 01:58, 24 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
edit

I have been looking over the edit history and references used for name and birthdate. Both look to have come from IMDb and are otherwise unreferenced. The attached reference is a book that supported a fact "He has been listed "among the top names in the voice-over field". Dini, Paul; Kidd, Chipp (1998). Batman Animated. New York: HarperEntertainment. p. 32. ISBN 006107327X." but the info supported was removed and just the name and birthdate which was added after that reference added. So the current reference does not support the current info. The only places I see "Jeffery Glenn Bennett" used is the IMDb bio which cannot be used to support biographical information in Wikipedia. And Anime News Network who likely got the info from IMDb and also is not a reliable source for bio info. Likewise the birthdate is only mentioned in IMDb which means we don't have a reliable source for either piece of information. He has been credited as "Jeff Glen Bennett" and "Jeff Glenn Bennett" and we have no way of knowing which is the correct spelling of his legal and birthname. Jeffrey was added by an IP likely from IMDb and also the normal presumption that Jeff cannot be a full given name and is always a diminutive, those assumptions are false.
