Death reports

So far the only sources for reports of his death have been e-mail discussion groups and other unofficial sources that are prohibited from being used by Wikipedia as sources. WP:BLP demands that any death report be accompanied by a reputable source, which means newspapers or news websites or wire services. Fan sites and discussion groups do not count and unless official information is released, we simply cannot include the information under the strict rules of WP:BLP. Similarly, however, we cannot confirm that it's a hoax either so such speculation should also likewise not be here unless it is officially proven otherwise (i.e. Reed pulling an Abe Vigoda). 23skidoo (talk) 14:15, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

• The Tennessean is reporting that he has died [1] but strangely there is no attribution given in this news article - no reference to a press release or official announcement. So do we count this or not? Just as an aside, I have just left a message with the AP's Arts and Entertainment desk suggesting they look into this - it's a news story if true and it's probably worth reporting if it's a false report, too. 23skidoo (talk) 16:44, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

• Until the matter of whether the Tennessean story is accurate is settled, I feel it should not be used as the sole source. Let's wait to see if AP or another source prints the story WITH ATTRIBUTION. Additional: I just contacted a journalist friend who has access to the live wire news feeds at a newspaper office and he says there's nothing on the wire services.   • It's now being reported by CNN and the AP. I have replaced the unsourced Tennessean citation with this link in the story. In case anyone has an issue with why I and others were sticklers on this, it's worth noting that one of the fan sites gave his date of death as August 31, when it was in fact Sept. 1, so we needed to make sure the source was accurate and had checked the facts. 23skidoo (talk) 22:31, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

      • That's the thing, especially given that the Tennessean story -- and some of the fan forum posts -- appear to originate from the same vague sources. I would go with the AP date because they would have, presumably, gotten their information either direct from police/medical authorities or an official press release. That's not to imply the Tennessean reporter didn't, either, but the AP story was released later so if the 31 Aug date was an error, then the later news reports corrected it. I ran into a similar situation regarding the death of Haley's Comets member Johnny Grande, who died while he was asleep, leaving vague the exact date on which he expired; since he didn't get the wide press coverage Reed did, the exact date of his death still varies between sources. 23skidoo (talk) 17:54, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Boy, does THIS article need to be overhauled!

This article is horribly written. It does no justice to a musician of Jerry Reed's stature. He was a great entertainer. The article needs a LOT of work, in my opinion.Runt (talk) 09:41, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Why is the local article being favoured?

Is there any reason why the Tennessean article is being favoured over the international coverage given by the Associated Press??? The removal of a source (a reputable source) is against Wikipedia policy. Based on the fact we have an INTERNATIONAL source stating Sept. 1 as the death date, this must be included, plus the fact more citations are needed per WP:VERIFY. I have reinstated the link and would be interested to see how anyone can justify deleting an AP source! 23skidoo (talk) 04:51, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

The fact that a source is "international" does not give it any more weight than a "local" source, assuming the sources are both valid and reputable in all other respects. That being said, I see no reason why any such source would be deleted. Exactly. I'm not denying the local source doesn't hold weight (I removed it earlier because it didn't offer any attribution for its facts), but there's no reason why the AP source shouldn't be included. And actually Wikipedia does tend to give more weight to international sources when it comes to "reputability". I also felt it important to include because local newspapers tend not to keep their pages active without taking them down after awhile or putting them behind subscription walls, whereas CNN does keep all its stories publicly accessible, so that source is less likely to succumb to link rot. 23skidoo (talk) 16:06, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Deterioration of his singing voice?

Is there any information about the deterioration of his singing voice? The last few times I saw him in concert, he could barely sing and on an episode of Evening Shade, he turned his back to the audience and camera while serenading Burt Reynolds and Marilu Henner with a pre-recorded version of "Today is mine".
