All-American?

edit

The article cites a press release from the Memphis athletic department for a claim that Cole was selected by the Associated Press as an All-American in 1953. Claims by athletic department PR folks are notoriously inaccurate and/or imprecise in such things as All-America honors. This appears to be such a case. The 1953 AP All-American team, as reported by the Memphis newspaper, is here. Cole is not on it -- not on the first team, not on the second team, and not even among the honorable mentions. • In fact, he was merely an "honorable mention" on the Little All-America team. See here. The claim that Cole was an AP All-American in 1953 needs to be removed~ Cbl62 (talk) 06:00, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • The claim of 1951 All-America status (based on a selection by Williamson) is also dubious. Who was Williamson? I've been researching All-America teams for 15 years and have never heard of such an All-America selector. Cbl62 (talk) 06:07, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
My searches came up empty on an All-America team selected by Williamson. The best I could find is another Little-All America "honorable mention" in 1951. See here. The press release is 0 for 2 on accuracy so far. Cbl62 (talk) 06:13, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
